I remember back in the early 90s when my brother John called me up on the phone one day and explained that he had found a niche in digitally manipulated photography. He said he was poised to make a good deal of money with it, but he couldn’t find any good help. He knew that I had been into computers and thought maybe he could get me to work for him helping him digitally manipulate his photography.
John was a professional photographer doing mainly stock photography, and had discovered some new software called Adobe Photoshop. John found that he could use Photoshop to fix problems with photos taken at an expensive photo shoot that would have had to been re-shot. He also found that he could use the software to create photographs that just could not be shot in real life. This was a great thing for his stock photography business.
At the time I had just had a business fail, and I was supporting my family as an injection molding press operator, earning near minimum wage working the graveyard shift. John lived in San Francisco at the time and his studio was located where AT&T stadium is now. I was living in Stockton California, a good hour and a half commute each way.
Well John offered me $50.00 an hour to come work for him in his studio in S.F., and I asked him what time he wanted me to report for work in the morning!
For the next 5 years I worked for my brother doing digital manipulation for stock photography, digital retouching, and lots of digital art and photography for advertising agencies. I remember one of my first projects was to put an egret’s wings onto a pig for a stock photo of flying pigs.
Another time I brought my pet three-foot-long iguana to the studio and we photographed him. In those days we used film, and after developing the film we would use a drum scanner to digitize the photo, and then use either Photoshop or Live Picture to manipulate the photos. We turned the iguana into a fire-breathing dragon.
One job we did for Mother Jones magazine involved replacing Madame Chiang Kai-shek’s head with Hillary Clinton’s head in a photo of Madame Chiang Kai-shek chatting with Eleanor Roosevelt in the rose garden at the White House. We were later told that Hillary had it framed and put on her desk. We also heard that she was at first confused because she did not recognize the outfit she was wearing in the photo. Go figure.
We specialized in “conceptual” stock photography, producing images such as money trees, time flies – (a watch with wings), an image of the earth in space but made of currency, dollar bills flying out the window, and that kind of thing. We also did photo-shoots for fortune 500 companies and used digital techniques to produce advertising images. John acquired an incredible reputation for producing the best stock photography of its kind, and all of the ad agencies knew him well. He was a huge success. He created a line of images he called “Animal Antics” using images of animals doing odd things like skateboarding and riding bikes. The images were the basis for a highly successful line of greeting cards.
I finally grew tired of the commute and of sitting in front of a computer all day with an art-director telling me what to do. I went back to being an inventor, and John capitalized very well on his pioneering venture into digital stock photography, digital manipulation and funny pictures of animals.
Back then John was the first and for some-time the only stock photographer using digital manipulation to produce stock photos. There was no internet, and stock photography was pretty much limited to ad agencies with big budgets.
In those days he sold stock photography through Tony Stone Images, and The Stock Market. Now Tony Stone is gone as is The Stock Market and Getty Images and number of other large stock agencies have replaced them. Royalty free photography, widespread use of digital manipulation, and the internet are changing the face of the industry. Times have changed and John recently told me that the future of stock photography was online.
Mom and Pop business’s are going on the internet to find stock photos for their newsletters, advertising both online and hard copy, brochures, trade show booths, etc. He feels the future of stock photography is online catering to the masses with low cost stock photography. There is a huge market for all types of photos for everything from photos for websites to pictures for brochures, to pictures for printed merchandise like cups and baseball caps. Most people now searching for stock photos don’t even know what a stock photo is. They search for “pictures of pigs” or “shark pictures”.
To take advantage of this burgeoning new market for stock photos, today’s upcoming photographers (and the old ones too) need to get their work online where it can be found and purchased.
Once again John is on the leading edge of his field. John has now launched a new website to address the blossoming online small business stock photo market. Somewhere on his website there are photos of fire-breathing dragons in a world where pigs do indeed fly.

5 Unique Uses for Your Digital Photographs
The improvement in digital photography has been a virtual landslide in technological advances and ease of use. More advanced cameras, printers, and image editing software have combined with a greater number of online and desktop based services allowing you to store and manage photographs. However, while digital photographs often prove to be a more practical and convenient choice when compared to traditional 6 x 4 prints they aren't without their drawbacks.
Regardless of of the number of options that exist to store and share digital images, we tend to download them from the camera or memory card onto the hard drive and then forget about them. Gone are the more tactile practices of handing out family photos and sharing the memories that we've built up across a lifetime. Fortunately, as well as being able to store and share photographs in their digital format the improvement in technology and printing techniques has also seen other options open up to us. Here are five unique and highly effective ways of using your digital photographs.
1 – Photo Calendars
The photo calendar is a personalised calendar that includes thirteen of your photographs in any order you require. Starting and ending in the month of your choice they make perfect gift ideas as well as an excellent means to show off your own photographs.
2 – Photo Bags
A photo bag can be customised to include one or two of your images. By using a photo montage or having one created from your favourite pictures, you can even include a larger selection of pictures. Bags that can be personalised to include your photos include handbags and purses, carry alls and wash bags, and even laptop bags.
3 – Home Décor
There's a great selection of personalised home décor products that include photo wallpaper and roller blinds, folding screens, and various forms of wall art. Used to either add a splash of colour and a mass of personality, or as a great gift idea, personalised home décor is both attractive and unique.
4 – Photo Canvas Prints
You can create your own canvas art using digital photographs. While digital photos do tend to work best it is even possible to scan your old paper prints and have these turned into equally effective canvas prints to hang on any wall.
5 – Photo Books
Photo books are a more modern but equally effective method of showing off your family photos. Images are printed directly onto high definition satin paper with no borders and offering exceptional image reproduction. They can be used to bring back some of the social aspects of sharing photographs and even include a great display or storage tin.
These are just some of the ways that you can use digital photographs in order to create great looking, great quality photo items. Ideal as gifts or as treasured keepsakes for your own use, personalised photo items have many different applications as well as options.

CUPERTINO, CA - OCTOBER 20: Two new MacBook Air models are displayed during an Apple special event at the company's headquarters on October 20, 2010 in Cupertino, California. whats the best macbook & digital photography camera?
i need a new laptop, ive had mine for over 5 years and its time to get a new one
i would like either the macbook pro 17in. or macbook air- which is better?
& whats a good digital photography camera between $200-$300
i prefer nikon or cannon, i think they work best
any suggestions?
I can't help you out much with the camera, but I can give you some input on the computer.
I'd say definitely buy a macbook pro. Obviously, macs are the nicest laptops when it comes to designing and photography. The air is gonna be a huge pain in the butt, because everything is external. Sure it's light, but it's super expensive for the quality you're going to get. For example, it does NOT come with a CD/DVD drive, you have to buy that separately. Everything is plugged into a USB port outside of the computer. I believe the air only has one USB port, also, which is a HUGE downside, considering all the stuff you have to plug into it.
Another downside (I'm not sure if this is completely true) but the only type of internet you can get with the air is WiFi, so most likely, you will eventually have to plug in a wireless connector, or a modem, taking up your 1 USB port already. Another downside to the air is that it has low battery life. It DOES run cooler than the other macbooks, so you can keep it on your lap for a while without it heating up really bad. In my opinion, I would definitely choose the pro, because it seems like less of a hassle. Lets just put it in this perspective:
say you want to plug in a mouse, a printer, your camera, an external CD/DVD drive, and a wireless modem; that's 5 USB ports needed, compared to the one you're given. I'm sure you can buy USB hubs for the air, but that's just even MORE money you're going to have to spend.
Hope I helped! :D

Photo Editor X Review - A Review of the Popular Digital Photo Editing Software
If you are looking for a review of the popular photo editing software Photo Editor X then you have come to the right place. It's always a good idea to check product reviews before making a purchase. Photo Editor X is a professional photo editing software program that allows you to edit and enhance your digital photos like the professionals without paying big bucks for photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop. In this review of Photo Editor X I will outline the pro's and the con's of this popular photo editing software so that you can make an informed decision regarding making a purchase.
Photo Editor X Review Point #1 - Price Versus Quality
When it comes to buying photo editing software the first thing that you will notice is that there is a wide range of pricing. You can spend anywhere from $50 all the way up into the thousands. Adobe Photoshop CS5 can run you an easy $1,000 brand new. So how do you know which one you should buy? Well, you have to decide which features are the most important to you. In review of Photo Editor X, one thing that I noticed that set it apart from other software programs was that it offered a large amount of features for a low price. With a price tag of around $50 it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended Version but it does give you the ability to do the basic things like remove red eye or change the background as well as do the more advanced things like work with layers and channels. For the price point that Photo Editor X is at, it's list of features is quite impressive. So, in my opinion, a lower price does not equate to lower quality or less features.
Photo Editor X Review Point #2 - Usability and Interface
One of the problems that you may run into when determining which photo editing program will work best for you is in regards to usability. If you are a professional then you want big features and big tools and if the interface has a bit of a learning curve then that may not be a big deal for you. If you are a novice, however, you want to enhance your photos without needing to get a degree in graphic design. The usability and interface, in my opinion, are the biggest highlights for Photo Editor X. You get the features of a professional photo editing software suite with a user-friendly interface. Anyone who has used Adobe Photoshop or Gimp knows that some photo editing programs can be tricky to learn. Photo Editor X not only has an easy to use interface, but the program comes with over 3 hours of video tutorials as well.
Photo Editor X Review Point #3 - Compatibility
An important factor that should be considered when purchasing any photo editing software is cross compatibility. As you work on different projects you may need to use files that are in different formats from the native file format of your photo editing program. It's important that your photo editor can work with a broad range of file types in order to prevent any disruptions in your workflow. One thing that I noticed about Photo Editor X is that it is compatible with a wide range of file types including Photoshop CS files and Dreamworks files. In fact, I couldn't find a single file type that Photo Editor X was not compatible with.
With the rapid growth of digital photography we now often have hundreds if not thousands if digital images stored on our computers. This has created a need for quality free photo software to help with both image editing and organizing our growing collections.
The 'gold standard' photo editor is Adobe Photoshop CS2. While Photoshop is an amazing product it is also quite expensive and some of the advanced features can be somewhat difficult to master. Another popular commercial product used to edit photo images is Paintshop Pro, which is less expensive and much easier to master than Photoshop, but is still around $100 US. Photoshop Elements is another commercial product that many find meets their basic photo editing needs and it sells for around $90 US. Fortunately there are many free photo editing software product alternatives that can meet the needs for all but true photo editing professionals (in which case Photoshop has high end features that certainly will be required).
The two most popular photo organizer software products are actually already free. Picasa from Google and Preclick Gold should be able to meet all of your digital photo organizing needs. There are a number of other free image organizers that also perform quite well.

Version 1.4 is compatible with Windows Vista.
2 Pic Easy to use basic photo and image editor. 2 Pic is designed for ease of use and it has a unique design with the functions clearly arranged on tabs. That's the big advantage of 2 Pic: with less time and less experience, you can do very creative things.

With digital photography do you think the need for light meters with strobes is being eliminated?
I know I can get my light ratios for portraits with a grey card or a zebra card and can fine tune when shooting tethered to a laptop with the program I use. Currently I am only usig my meter to get me in the "ballpark". How has digital effected your use of your meter?
I'm so bad about using it since going digital, I still love how film looks and thinking about going back for awhile so I can take shots that are truly my own

I chase storms and I am looking into getting a camera that can capture them well. I edit my photos on the computer, so I am looking for a digital camera that works well in low-light conditions, I can manually adjust the exposure (f number and shutter speeds), and I could keep the shutter open to wait for lightning strikes. Prices would be helpful but I can look them up myself if needed. Any suggestions?
Just about any digital SLR will have manual or automatic controls. Pricewise, you're looking at somewhere between $600-$1200 for a good camera with a kit lens. I won't get into a debate over brands. Everybody has their preferences, but camera makers are very competitive and most models will have the features to do the job.
More importantly, you're might want to look into getting a lens that's wider than 18mm. 18mm is about the equivalent of 28mm in film cameras-- wide enough for group portraits and landscapes, but to capture large areas of sky you'll want something ever wider. Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina are third-party lens makers that make lenses for most major brands. Also look into getting a circular polarizer filter to put over the end of your lens. It can be adjusted to darken the sky and cut the glare out of the clouds-- it's a must for landscapes and weather photography. Good luck!
Tutorial: Digital Photography Exposure Compensation
How do you acheive light trails in a digital photography of a highway?
I have the ability to set my aperture and shutter speed, so any help is good.
You have to have the shutter speed set to the longest exposure and supposedly you will be taking pictures at nightime so have the aperture at its widest. A good tripod would also be handy.
Photography Lighting Tips for Portraits - Tutorial by Hunter Freeman
As a beginner in photography, learning professional photography tips will greatly help speed up the learning process. You'll effectively learn how to avoid the common errors and mistakes beginners make while learning techniques that take the average photo taker years to get at.
There are two aspects to professional photography tips that will be covered here. Both, however, fall under one very important "rule". This rule is followed by professional photographers the same way devout religious folks follow their religion.
The rule is perfection.
Average viewers of art, such as photography, seem to think that great works are a result of talent. While talent does have some part, the greater part has to do with an obsession with perfection. And in photography, this perfection covers two aspects: visual composition and proper camera settings.
Visual Composition
Of all the digital photography tips, visual composition is the most useful for improving the way your photos look. Composition basically involves the way you place objects in the image and how you arrange the perspective.
There are many "Rules" to composition that have been established through the hundreds of years of artwork. Such examples include "rule of thirds", "leading lines" etc. These rules are very useful for newbies first starting out at photography. They will help you find the right angles and place your camera in the right place.
Camera Settings
The next aspect to professional looking images is setting your camera right. No matter how properly composed your image, if it is blurry or excessively grainy from poor exposure choices it will be amateur at best.
As a beginner, the best solution is to start out with easier camera modes than full manual. If you have an SLR camera, try experimenting with aperture and shutter priority modes. Stay away from fully automatic modes as this mode is often the reason beginners have blurry photos.
The more control you have over the camera settings, the more you can reach that "perfectionism" that is sought after by the pro photographers. As you start out, try controlling individual things such as the aperture, ISO, shutter, etc. Once you get a grasp of each of these, try controlling them all at the same time.
When you get a solid grasp of both of these aspects of photography and can take clean looking images, the next step is to begin experimenting creatively. You can, of course, begin experimenting right now! However, realize that having technical limitations can limit your creativity if you do not know how to work around it.

What is a 35mm digital camera?
I want to sign up for a digital photography class and it says that a 35mm digital camera with manual options is preferred. What does this mean? I have a nikon s700. Does this mean I should get a DSLR like a D90? Help?
Ask your teacher again to clarify if what you need is a film SLR or a digital SLR. 35mm cameras use film. The two samples below are brand new film SLRs.
This is an example of a digital 35mm SLR camera. ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/165828-USA/Nikon_1796_F100_35mm_SLR_Camera.html ) The picture includes a lens but the actual item does not. You will need to buy a lens for it. It's called digital for its use of an LCD to show current settings and for the use of buttons and a menu system to change those settings. Make no mistake. This camera uses 35mm film.
This is an example of a manual (older mechanical type) 35mm SLR camera with lightmeter. ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/112196-USA/Nikon_1689_FM10_35mm_SLR_Camera.html ) This one includes a zoom lens. Ask your photography instructor if you can use this instead if what he requires is a film SLR.
You can find cheaper secondhand cameras at eBay. Just look under "Film SLRs" and make sure you get one with a working lightmeter and an attached lens.
If what you need is a digital SLR, here are your choices. ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/SLR-Digital-Cameras/ci/6222/N/4288586280 )

Do like to learn more about digital photography but you do not have the time to do so because of busy work, family, doing a lot of chores, a full time student, and the like? Well, you have to enroll to an online digital photography course.
There are tons of online digital photography course around the web. However, some may not be as competent as the other. The reason? Some people only create online digital photography course for the sole purpose of profit, well, that is highly discouraging because it is already implied that are after your money, and not your learning. Here are some things you could take note of in considering which online digital photography course to take.
Make sure that it teaches digital photography, not film photography
Some Online digital photography course intentionally fail to indicate that they are teaching digital in hopes that one would fall under their snare to learn about film photography, completely different of had the client intended. There could be no complaints regarding this, because once the money had been transferred, the client is completely stopped, which leaves them no choice but to carry on.
Internet is good at feedbacks
This is one thing internet is good at - feedbacks. Do not rely on the in-site feedback system, but rely on blogs, for they provide a clearer outlook on such. Browse carefully in order to find out what kind of service and how good your prospective online photography course is. See also what they are specializing in, and then correlate such on what you actually need. Then from there, you would have a clearer judgment on whether to enroll or choose another instead.
The price must be right for your Online digital photography course.
Your money must be worth every penny when you finished the course. It must have that effect that when you are finished, you would seek for more with that feeling of complete satisfaction. However, this does not mean to select online photography schools with high standards indiscriminately. They might give you good knowledge but they would also take a good amount of money of your pocket, no one would want that. Be wise in choosing, remember, your money is at stake here.
Free e-books please?
Most online photography courses provides for a free e-book so after you are done, you could always look back on what you had learned. Such would be useful for quick reference with that assurance that what you learned would never fly out of your head because it is in your computer. As stated, most online digital photography courses provides for a free e-book upon enrolment, so do not worry, it is very likely for you to have one.
See to it that your instructors are competent on your online digital photography course
Some lay person or some insignificant person with little knowledge about photography may think that are already good because they have a hot camera, complete accessory, and all expensive photography stuffs. The tendency therefore, is for them to think highly of themselves, to that point of creating an online digital photography course. This is bad because future clients would soon begin to realize that such are mediocre and did not even enter a photography school. So see to it that the instructors of your prospective online digital photography course are high caliber photographers with excellent gallery and good qualifications.
If you are careful and very scrutinizing, achieving these 5 points is easy. Just think of it as a good preliminary time investment for your future self as a digital photographer. Remember, you are doing this not for some people but for your own self.
Hi, I am Gaylene Slater, the author of Living the Good Life in Love, Life and Family. Living in a small town in rural West Australia does have its challenges, although this is where I also found the inspiration to write my first book! All along our many travels I have been fortunate enough to engage in many photo opportunities and it really came to a head late last year when trying to master the art of photography. So I decided to help a few other people out and create a few articles on digital photography on how to use it, understand how creative it can be, but most of all just how to really enjoy taking good quality photos. Too really enjoy photography you really need to understand it and be able to use a camera as an extension of your body, mind and soul, only then will the photos really show what you want to see feel and enjoy. For either your own personal library or as a professional photographer the results are all in how you learn it and use it, these articles should help.
For 11th grade history class we need to write a report about how technology effects something. My topic is how technology effects photography. Then my thesis is digital technology has made photography easier and cheaper...
As long as you have strong facts to back up your thesis, it sounds fine ;- )

1 Explain what Aperture and Shutter Speed is in digital photography?
I need to write an explanation of shutter speed and aperture in photography. Also need to explain how Aperture effects an image taken in portrait and landscape modes. Have to give an explanation and some examples of when adjusting shutter speed would be useful.
Aperture is the lens opening, which controls how much light comes through the lens.
Shutter speed is how long the shutter exposes the sensor/film to the incoming light.
The aperture, along with the lens focal length and sensor size, affects the amount of area in focus in front of and behind your subject, called "depth of field."
Depth of field is important because of those times you may want a large area in focus (a landscape shot) or a shallow area in focus (say, for a portrait). A wide aperture or big lens opening makes for shallow depth of field, while a small aperture makes for more depth of field or more area in focus.
As for adjusting the shutter speed, it could be useful for stopping action (a fast shutter speed) or for creating special effects (motion-blurred water) or to achieve a particular aperture to get the depth of field you want (shutter speed and aperture together control the exposure. Change one variable and you have to change the other).
So, for your homework, you now have to hope I told you the truth about everything or you can copy and take the risk that everything I said or some of what I said is a lie...Or you could just double-check what I said and then re-write it into your own words.

Are you always running out of battery power just before you take that perfect picture with your digital camera? Here are some
tips to conserve your batteries when you are out "snapping away".
1) Turn off your digital camera when not in use. If you are in a situation where you must snap pictures quickly, this may not
apply as turning digital cameras on and off take a few seconds, and may cause you to miss a picture-taking opportunity.
However, if you are taking a leisurely stroll and can afford a couple of seconds before snapping a still subject, by all
means, conserve your digital camera's energy!
2) Many digital cameras have a regular viewfinder and an LCD viewfinder. While the digital LCD viewfinder has its benefits,
it can drain battery power. Turn it off when applicable and use your regular viewfinder for taking pictures.
3) Don't stop after taking every photo and look at the picture in your digital camera's playback mode. Granted, you sometimes
need to look at photos immediately after shooting them in order to make sure your exposure is correct, the lighting is ok,
etc., but doing this does use up your digital camera's battery power.
4) If you are using MicroDrive media, be forewarned that these miniature hard drives may take up quite more power than
Compact Flash cards.
Taking care of you new battery pack
Normally, a new battery pack comes in a very low charge condition and must be fully charged before use. Refer to the user
manual of your portable electronic equipment for charging instructions. A new battery pack needs to be fully charged and
fully discharged or "cycled" as much as five times to condition them into performing at full capacity. Your equipment may
report a fully charge condition in as short as 10 to 15 minutes when the new battery pack is being charged for the first
time. This is a normal phenomenon especially for Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) and Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) chemistries. When
this happens, remove the battery pack and let it cool
down for about fifteen minutes then repeat the charging procedure. "Conditioning" (fully discharging and then fully charging)
is necessary so as to maintain the optimum performance of a battery pack, and is recommended at least once a month
particularly for Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries. Failure to do so could result in reduced charge capacity and can significantly
shorten the battery packs useful life. Lithium Ion batteries do not require conditioning. It is normal for a battery pack to
get warm when charging and during use. However, if the battery pack gets excessive hot, here may be a problem with the
portable electronic equipments charging circuit and should therefore be checked by a qualified technician. Rechargeable
batteries undergo self-discharging when left unused for long periods of time. This is normal particularly in the case of Ni-
MH and Li-ion chemistries. For best results, always store a battery pack fully charged. It should be removed from the
equipment and kept in a cool, dry and clean place. The amount of runtime a battery pack produces depends on the power
requirements of components in your electronic equipment.
Don't let under-charged batteries keep you from taking great photos.
If you infrequently use your digital camera, you may think that you after you use your digital camera, recharge your NiMH
batteries, wait a few weeks or months, then use your digital camera again, that your batteries will be charged and you'll be
ready to snap photos, right?
Oops... Do that and you'll be stuck with a non-functioning digital camera or one that just blinks a picture showing a dead
battery.
Rechargeable batteries don't stay charged forever. They tend to lose a little bit of their power every day. If you charge
your batteries and frequently use your digital camera, you will probably never notice this loss of power. However, after a
couple of weeks, the power loss may be noticeable, and after a couple of months or longer of non-use, those once ready-to-go
batteries may have lost enough power to make them unusable.
Don't get caught in this trap. Always charge your batteries before every trip, and make sure to use a battery charger with a sensor that prevents over-charge.
1 What free photo editing software can I use to do this?
I'm trying to crop a person out of a photo and drop her into a different background. I have Photoscape but I'm not sure how to do that with the program. If anybody knows how to do it please tell me. Or if you know of a free software I can download to do it with please let me know (and how to do it with that software).
You can do it with GIMP, which is free. It might take some effort and time to learn enough of GIMP to do it. It's time well spent, though, in the long run.
You take the 'foreground layer' picture (the person) and erase everything but the person. You can make the eraser very small and zoom in really close to get it right down to the pixel. It's a little time-consuming but not hard. Then you bring in the background picture beneath it as a 'background layer'.
Then if you want you can re-adjust brightness, contrast and 'levels' in both layers to make them match. It just depends on how much time you want to spend.

I'm an amateur photographer. As in, I don't wish to take it up as a career, but I absolutely loooooooooooooove photography. The thing is, I need to buy a new camera for photography, but I'm not sure which one to get. Someone help me out please.
I would go with a very basic camera that sets the standard for image quality.
I heartily recommend a Mamiya RZ67.
And if you have a little bit more money it is tough to beat the Hasselblad 500 C/M. Famous for it's creamy, exquisite tonal graduation and juicy color rendition.
