Photography - How to Sell Your Photographs

Selling your photographs to make a little extra side money is an appealing idea. But how realistic is it? As it turns out, quite realistic, provided that you are not hoping to get rich doing it.

Let me say right off the bat that if you are hoping to get into photography and live off the proceeds of your image licensing royalties, that's a whole different ball game. Like every other artist in the world, you will need an extraordinary game plan and the requisite talent to bring it off. I cannot help you with that.

But if you are already taking pictures on a regular basis, and at least a fraction of them are very good, then it makes sense to consider licensing them. Like I said, you are unlikely to get rich doing this, but you might earn enough money each year to outfit with a new high-end camera body, or that lens you fantasize about but which you otherwise would never go so far as to buy.

So why is it not possible to get rich selling your photos?

It is simply a matter of numbers. Most of the popular online image exchanges - the ones that will allow anyone capable of creating quality photos to upload their material and license it out - sell images for about a dollar a piece, and of that they will pay you perhaps 25 cents (maybe 50 cents if you are really lucky). If you are thinking that this is a pretty poor deal for the photographer, you are right. But this does seem to be par for the course, so there may be some operational expenses to running an image exchange that are not immediately obvious. Either way, that's the current reality of the business.

So let's consider the numbers again. The reason that images typically sell for a dollar is that the buyers are webmasters looking for low resolution filler images for their web properties. They will happily fork over one or two dollars for an image, but would frown at paying five dollars. You may get hundreds of people willing to pay you a dollar for an image before you can find a couple willing to pay five dollars for a high resolution version that could be printed on a coffee mug. You will find even fewer buyers - magazine and book picture editors, and the like - who are prepared to pay twenty dollars for the highest available resolution version.

So you will make your money from the masses, and at 25 cents a pop you will need 4000 licensed instances of your images before the image exchange will cut your first check for $1000. You might manage this by uploading 100 images that average 40 downloads, or you might upload just 4 mind-blowing images that average 1000 downloads a piece. It will come as no surprise that most people make their money by creating as many good photographs as they can. They do not rely on their ability to generate that rare master photo that everybody must have.

Most of the online image exchanges will reject your images if they do not meet the high standards that the exchange has set for itself. So be smart and peruse the exchanges to get an idea of the quality that is required. Your images, in addition to being captivating enough to make people want to download them, also need to be technically perfect. High resolution images with imperceptible noise levels and perfect color balancing are the minimum technical requirements. Get used to shooting at ISO 100, even for low-light shots that require a tripod, mirror lock up and cable release.

The editors of each exchange will have their own standards, of course, and what gets rejected at one site may be accepted elsewhere. So don't give up immediately if you have a door slammed in your face. Van Gogh could not convince anyone to buy even one of his paintings in the course of his own lifetime. That did not mean his pictures were worthless. But picture editors might not see where you are coming from if they do not recognize the market that you are targeting. For this reason, it pays to figure out beforehand what is selling well before you submit your first portfolio. After that you are likely to meet less resistance if you veer off in a slightly different direction.

It is also a good idea to specialize the themes of your photography. If you take particularly good landscape shots, and build a body of landscape images, your clients will be impressed by your body of work when they are selecting that first image of yours, and they will likely seek you out again when they require a similar image.

Other online image exchanges that operate in a fashion similar to iStockPhoto include Fotolia, ShutterStock, and DreamsTime. All are worth checking out. They are free to join and take a commission on your licensed images.

Another tack you can take, if you don't like the idea of licensing your images so cheaply, is to go with an online photographic service that allows you to set your own pricing. These are a little harder to find. One such site is PhotoStockPlus which targets event photographers. If you photograph weddings, parties, special occasions, then you are their primary demographic.

PhotoStockPlus offers a subscription service and gives you your own little e-commerce store where you can sell plain photographic prints, as well as have them emblazoned across, for example, a T-shirt, a coffee mug, or a mouse pad. The idea is that you add a markup on top of the wholesale price that PhotoStockPlus charges for supplying these items with your images on them, and that markup is passed onto your clients. All you do is upload the photos, set the markups, and then point people toward the site. The rest is hands-off. The cost of the service to you is reasonable, with rates that start at less than $30/month.

Regardless of the route you take to monetize your photography, actually doing something about it makes a lot of sense. You can either let your best images sit on your PC year after year, where they will likely get lost in the course of time, or you can put them out into the world where they will have a chance to earn you both a little fame and some recurring income.

Your peers often judge your photos, so you can see what kind of impact your photos make on your viewers.

As your skill levels increase, start looking for contests sponsored by the camera and software companies and by the photography magazines. Some of these are very inexpensive to enter, such as PhotoLife Magazine's bi-monthly reader contest. Others are huge, international contests, with hefty fees and giant prize packages. These are the contests that can create a very solid photography career for you!

Here are a few things to watch for:
* Make sure that you read the terms & conditions of participating in each contest. There are some contests in which you forfeit your copyright to your photo / work just by registering in the contest. What's the point of showcasing your work if you legally sign it over to someone else? So make sure you read the terms.
* Follow the instructions. This cannot be over-emphasized.
* Enter in the best category for your photos. (scenic beauty, human form, travel photos, etc.)
* Read the fine print. Many contest organizations won't return your entry, so don't send them original material.
* Many contests place a limit to the number of entries you can submit, you will get disqualified if you send more.
* Read the definition of amateur or professional to be sure you qualify.

Entering photography contests can be a very rewarding hobby that can pay off big time. Challenge yourself to get out every week and learn something new about using your camera and some new concept or technique to improve your work. Then enter, enter, enter ... until you WIN!

Okay....unnecessarily harsh, but the previous two answers were right. The market for even professional photography has been tight lately (always has been), so the odds of making any money as a beginner are very slim. If you're set on giving sales a shot, try first with local or regional magazines as they're more likely to print reader submissions. Just be aware, though, that most don't pay for submissions. This would be for exposure, only.

If you're looking at some payback for your photographic efforts, you could always make those photos into calendars for holiday gifts, saving you both shopping time and money.

How to Submit Digital Pictures for Magazine Publication

Most magazines now accept digital images. The question is will they accept mine!

I won’t answer that question I’ll leave that to you to answer once you have finished reading this article.

It’s only just recently that magazines have decided to accept digital images this is due to the image quality of early digital camera were not man enough for the job i.e. did not produce images with enough resolution and level of detail to reproduce well in magazines. Most Picture Editors on magazines prefer either slides or prints as this is mainly at present habit but is currently changing due to more professional photographers using digital cameras. A good reason your images may not be accepted is if you supply your images already printed, it's OK to do this for your Granny, family or friends it’s a no no when submitting to a publication. Why, have a close look at your printed image the picture is made up of tiny dots and lines. When scanned by the repro department they have to blur your image to try to get rid of these dots and lines otherwise your image has a moiré effect so you end up with an image that looks bad. Your best option is to supply your images to the magazine on CD-ROMs again don’t use cheap ones they go wrong! You can get approx. 31 images onto a CD of 700mbs if each image is 22mbs in size.

Increase the resolution.

Digital photography and getting your pictures into print is supplying an image to the correct pixel size and resolution in a format that can be easily opened by another computers operating systems. What does that mean, well not everyone uses Microsoft Windows many publishers use Apple Macs some even use Linux if your image can't be viewed IT WILL NOT BE USED!
Many magazines now included brief information on submitting digital photographs in the content section. Have a look at http://www.photographymonthly.com/reqs_details.cfm. To see how to submit images to Photography Monthly. If in doubt, ask. Did you notice they want your image resolution at 300dpi, your camera only takes a picture at 72dpi, how do I know what size my image needs to be at 300dpi. Help is at hand here’s a link to a little tool, which will help with image sizes, pixels, colour depth and file size.

Using this software to see what size your image can go to and then you can resize your image accordingly in your normal photo editing software.

Size matters!

The pictures pixel dimensions can be read with the above tool so dimensions of say 3200x2400pixels we would be looking for a file size of about 21mbs this would be OK for a full page. The above program can help you decide what size your image will be OK up to.

Why JPG?

Another problem magazine picture editors come up against is images supplied in a unusual format. To save problems later ALWAYS save images in JPG format. JPG format is optimised for compressing full-colour or grey-scale photographic-type digital images. The reason for using this format is that any computer system can open JPG images. Remember, not everybody uses Microsoft's Windows, many magazine publishers’ use Apple Macs and some people are using Linux systems. Regardless of the system used all will read JPEG files.

Submitting work.

When submitting work remember to include your name & address with a brief synopsis of what is on the CD together with a high quality printout of your images and the file names of the images, this can be easily done in PhotoShop by going to File > Automate > contact sheet. Find the folder your images are in pick your paper size and number of images on each sheet of paper. Please remember someone has to look at these images so small images get a thumbs down as does too many. Don't forget to stick a DO NOT BEND label on the envelope as CDs don't like being bent.

Do's and Don'ts of submitting your Digital Pictures

Do’s

Do Make sure your images are to the correct pixel size and resolution.

Do Make sure you send a contact sheet of the images on the CD together with file names.

Do save in JPG format.

Do clearly name image files on CD-ROM.

Do use high quality ink and photo paper for contact sheets.

Do turn off time/date stamp, as it’s difficult to remove and takes time.

Do enclose return postage if you require your bits back

Do e-mail if you are unsure of what is required or how files should be submitted

Don’t

Don’t e-mail huge unsolicited images

Don’t over sharpen images

Don’t send hundreds of images – be selective, send only pictures to do with that publication (*see below).

Don't send pictures of different subject matter unless requested

Don’t use cheap blank CD-ROM’s, paper or ink.

Don’t send expensive storage media i.e. the card from your camera

Don’t use long file names remember, not everybody uses Microsoft's Windows.

Don’t use 3rd party software on your CD’s to try to display your images when viewed.

*If the magazine is say an aircraft magazine don't send irrelevant images of an say landscapes, animals etc... Stick to the magazine subject.
