3 Digital Photography Tips – Straightforward Info On Capturing Stunning Shots!

There are lots of digital photography tips that you can find online. However, most of the time, you'll find them either too technical or too advanced for you to understand. So this time we'll go to the basics of digital photography…after all capturing amazing images and turning them into breathtaking masterpieces need not be complicated.

Aside from your photographer's instincts (is there such a term…?), your SLR digital camera is one of the best tools that you've got to capture your subject or a fleeting moment. But, that doesn't mean that you'll completely rely on your camera to do all the work…you should also pay special attention to even the littlest details before shooting, during and after a shot has been taken.

So check out these tips to get a good insight about digital photography and how you could make a simple image into a spectacular one…..without being overwhelmed…

3 No Nonsense Tips And Strategies To Capture Great Images Using Your SLR Camera

Tip #1. Keep in mind that photography is not just about shooting pictures…it also requires some common sense as well.

So what do I mean by that? Don't be caught in a situation wherein you've missed a shot while outdoors or traveling, just because your memory card is full and you simply forgot to bring an extra; or maybe your camera batteries are drained…that's so frustrating!!

Thus, if you have to go shoot outdoors, make sure that you've checked what's inside your DSLR digital camera bag. Make sure that you have extra batteries with you, memory cards, cleaning cloths and lenses.

Tip #2. Use your digital SLR's manual settings as much as possible.
Shooting photos with your camera's auto mode is okay….however manual settings allow you to be more creative with your images…so take time to know your equipment better…learn more about how manually setting your camera's shutter speed, ISO, aperture and white balance to name a few would impact your photos.

It's not as complicated as it seems to be once you get the hang of using your digital SLR camera manual settings….remember practice makes perfect.

Tip #3. Take several shots of your subject.

Why is this necessary? Because this way, most likely, you have taken photos of your subject in different angles, which gives you a lot of alternatives and options when you get to edit your images afterwards…thus, keeping you from being disappointed or frustrated when you get to see the final image result. After all, there's no film to waste so you can experiment and explore at your heart's desire.

Hopefully, with these digital photography tips, you'll realize the importance of being more familiar with your SLR digital camera and being mindful of your gears and equipment to capture a great shot.

Portrait Photography Digital

What is the best digital SLR photography camera?

My photography styles are :
- Action and Sports
- Portraits
- Landscapes

Which camera would be the best for me?
& my budget is around $350

Thankss

best one is the Nikon D3x which is $7000 without a lens

as for your budget, you can't get any current-gen... or even last gen cameras for that much. The cheapest ones I recommend are the Nikon D3000 and canon Rebel xs which can both be found for $500

as for your photography styles, those three things matter on the lens you choose. For an action sports lens, you can probably get away with the 55-200 or 55-300mm lens which will cost in the neighborhood of $400

for portraits, you will need a portrait lens such as the 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8. For nikons the f/1.8 version will fit, but you cannot autofocus with cameras the cameras less than $1000, the f/1.4 version will autofocus. the f/1.8 runs $100, and the f/1.4 costs apprx $300ish
as for landscapes, that calls for a wide angle lens, such as the Tokina 11-17mm lens. It matters what you get, but you can expect a decent wide angle lens to be $400+

my suggestion: save more money, get around $550-$600 and get the Nikon D3000 or Canon Rebel xs (or the next gen equivalents if they come out before you reach that budget point), and start with that.

How To Take Great Digital Pictures

7 Creative Ideas for Digital Picture Frames

Digital Picture Frames come in a variety of styles, but many of them look like your traditional photo frames. The digital frames allow you to load your digital pictures – and even music – into them for interactive photo frames!

They are both affordable and easy to use, making them ideal for any family. They also make great gifts as a stand-alone item, or pre-loaded with digital pictures and music.

A digital picture frame will display streaming slide shows, play music, and even show video files. As easy as they are to load with digital content, you can keep your picture frame current with recent photos from vacation, graduation, family events, your growing children – or practically anything you want to show off!

Below are 7 super creative ways that you can use digital picture frames:

1. Set up a comforting slide show of family photos, accompanied by lullabies, and place it in the nursery for your baby or small child to enjoy. You might include pictures of Mommy, Daddy, grandparents and even the favorite teddy bear. Not only will they enjoy their personalized show, but it makes a great night light as well!

2. Create a slideshow of family photos that spans several across decades for your parents wedding anniversary. It will make the perfect gift! Let them watch their children grow up all over again while they enjoy highlights from their life together. This is sure to be a big hit at the anniversary party.

3. Give the grandparents something to show off! Preload the digital picture frame with current pictures of their grandchildren before you give it to them. You can update it with new pictures each time you go for a visit. This would make a great holiday or birthday gift, and its something they would truly treasure.

4. Use your digital picture frame to encourage fun family time. Let everyone, even the children, take fun pictures during family outings. It may be a trip to the park, a hike in the woods, or a day at the pool. You can update your digital frame together afterwards. The children will really enjoy being involved in the “production” for your ever-changing photo frame!

5. Digital frames are perfect for business counters or office desks. You can display current specials or new products. Imagine a real estate agent showcasing the latest homes. A photographer showing off their line of prints. An interior decorator displaying a slideshow of before and after shots from recent contracts. A web designer could even showcase screen shots of their best work. The ideas are endless!

6. Let your digital picture frame tell a story with a musical slideshow. It may be the building of your new home. You can showcase your children from birth to their current age. Or you might make a mini-movie of your life as a couple - from dating to wedding to children. It will keep people captivated to the very end, and be an incredible conversation piece!

7. Use your digital frame as a mobile presentation tool. Small and easy to carry, you can display almost any type of images you like. Most have a remote control and are compatible with various file formats, allowing you to offer an intriguing visual presentation on almost any topic!

If you have hundreds of pictures on your hard drive, or try to show off pictures with the display screen on your digital camera, these new frames would be perfect for you.

They are easy to use, and don’t need to be hooked up to a computer to work. You can simply download pictures from your digital camera, or use common memory cards to create your digital slideshows.

Imagine all of the fun ways you could display your digital images! Your digital frame is sure to light up any room, and spark great conversations.

Better Digital Photography - Learn Easy Tips - How Do I Improve My Pictures to Look More Professional

Digital photography is so fun, and by following some simple ideas you can drastically improve your photos. You can start making your digital snap shots look more like professional photographs.

Here's five simple ideas to help you quickly improve your pictures.

1. Move closer to the subject you are photographing.

By moving closer and filling your frame with your subject, you will put more focus on who you are photographing. You can also do this by zooming in with your camera. Sometimes you might want to keep your cropping loose if you want to include a nice background, like a landmark or scenery. But for the most part, your photos will look better when you stay close to your subject.

2. Look at your subject from a different perspective.

Another great tip to make your pictures more interesting, is to photograph your subject from a different or unique perspective. An example would be to shoot from higher or lower angle. You might even try moving your subject to a different level, like up in a tree or lying on the floor. Your photographs will not only look more interesting, they will look more professional. And you and your subject will have fun doing them.

3. Don't take your time - just get to it!

This tip might seem a bit crazy, but you'll see your photos improve by just shooting faster. The expressions on your subjects will look more natural and less 'frozen'. It's hard enough to look natural for a photograph and it's even harder if you have to keep that smile on your face for too long.

Something else you might try is to photograph your subject when they don't know you're shooting. Again, they will look more natural and real. It's a great way to capture children, when they're just playing and being themselves.

4. Turn the flash off.

Here's probably the best rule or idea. Turn the on-camera flash off! Available light always looks better than that direct blasted on-camera flash. I know it's not always possible because you may not always have enough light, but you should look for this light. Soft window light is always nice, and outdoors in a park will have loads. Professional photographers always try their best to use real or available light. It wraps around a face and doesn't look blasted or washed out like a flash can sometimes.

5. Shoot lots.

The last tip that will improve your pictures, is to just shoot more - shoot lots! You're shooting digital right, so shoot lots and delete the ones that don't work out? When you shoot more, you'll improve your chances of capturing that great shot. When you photograph people, they blink occasionally, so if you shoot a few more frames you'll get the shot without the blinks. And by shooting more, you'll be practicing different ideas and approaches. All of which will translate into better photographs.

Using these easy to follow ideas will quickly help make your pictures look more professional, but if you want to learn even more techniques to make your photography look better, visit this Informative Site.

Don't keep shooting snapshots like everyone else. Learn right away how to get the most out of your digital camera and have fun creating lasting and professional looking photographs.

The Interior Designer's Top Ten Photo Opportunities..

1.Think old and impressively industrial. An industrial workplace museum will give you hundreds of photo opportunities and allow you to set your images in an era of your choosing - top choice is the recently opened Jewellery Museum in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. Industry, culture and creativity under one roof - a perfect location for a cool workplace photographer.

2.Jazz clubs have provided the backdrop for countless timeless images. The colourful characters associated with the music business make fabulous portraits and offer a wealth of performance related image opportunities that can be dropped easily into any public space setting. Top photo choice is Ronnie Scott's. 47 Frith Street, London W1.

3.Horse Racing will never go out of fashion. Beautiful animals and glamorous folk make stunning subjects for any portfolio. Try to get behind the scenes to catch the very best shots although a clear line-up at the winning post is always a success with corporate clients. Imagery is essential in business Top picture choice is Plumpton Race Course in Sussex. Soft hills and green fields add polish to a very slick operation.

4.Historic images sit well with many designers who use architectural shapes in photography to reflect their own constructions. With so many outstanding buildings and striking monuments to choose from it is easy to find something appropriate. Top snappers choice is Glastonbury Tor in Somerset. Set high on a green grassy hill, the Tor fits well with all kinds of interior designs and never loses magnificence or relevance.

5.Giant sunflowers are always a winner - just ask Van Gogh! But don't confine yourself to stuffy art gallery imagery. Some of the world's finest sunflower images are now available as limited edition prints. Top choice is anything by Georgia O'Keefe but better still is something new and original you have photographed or painted yourself. Plant those seeds against a south facing wall and water well for best results.

6.Boats of all kinds fit well with mellow, relaxed design schemes. Water colours such as greens, blues and greys can really add atmosphere to boating scenes. Look out for photo opportunities with bright coloured highlights or reflections to focus the eye. Top snapping opportunities include Falmouth in Cornwall, anywhere in the Solent and glorious Whitby in North Yorkshire.

7.Wildlife images offer a range of colour alternatives that can stretch from burnt browns framing African lion scenes to amazing pure white arctic panoramas complete with penguins and polar bears. Many British interior designers delight in deer and otters. Top opportunities for snapping both can be found on Exmoor in Devon.

8.Modern art can offer the creative photographer/designer amazing opportunities to link shapes and textures. Concrete sculpture images sit comfortably on rough finished plaster walls while hard cropped images of contemporary bronze sculptures can make fantastic talking points . Top location is undoubtedly the Hannah Pescher Sculpture Garden in Surrey. Ten acres of amazement and wonder.

9.Exquisite landscapes are obvious additions to any country house interior design but forget about the oil paintings. Nowadays a stunning photograph can attract just as much attention, especially if it is printed on canvas and framed by a master. Constable made much of the Fens; but a top choice these days is the view from the Hogs Back just outside Guildford.

10.Nudes will always have a place on our walls but never forget that less is usually more. Tasteful and discreet can lead to conversation whilst lurid only leads to tears. Top choice for a nude portrait just has to be Rankin but there are a host of wannabes.

Four Things You Need For Better Photography

MagicPrints coupon code

You may have spent a whole lot of money on a camera that was supposedly manufactured by one of the best companies in the world; but you still wonder how come your pictures haven't improved at the slightest.

Well, it's not that you don't have the skill or the talent. In fact, you might have even gone to school and read all the best photography books. Why is that? It's probably because you don't have the right equipment yet. Before you get frustrated with yourself, think about getting a couple of these items first to help improve that shot of yours.

• A tripod - Yes, you may think that this is one of the most basic things in photography, but that is exactly it. A photographer needs a tripod. Surely enough, you will have your own share of situations when a tripod will be of much use to you. A tripod will not only just keep a camera steady for that great shot you want to capture. It's also quite useful to keep your camera in position for a shoot while you're preparing the backdrop, model, or the settings in your camera to get that perfect shot. If you don't have one already, get a tripod for your kit.

• A level - You need this to make your horizontal or vertical shots right. Although this usually comes with a tripod, but there are some that don't come pre-loaded with this. This nifty little thing will help you get your horizontal or vertical shots right so you can get the best shot you could possibly have.

• Filters - You are definitely going to need this if you're planning to get the right amount of light for your shot. Your camera is not enough when it comes to trying to get the right contrast between the land and sky or ocean and sky. You can fix this by investing in camera filters that can give you all sorts of lighting effects. You can use these things to control colors and light that your camera can capture so you can truly get the shot you want.

• Lenses - There are all sorts of lenses that you can purchase if you are using a DSLR camera. There are different types of lenses that are perfect for different kinds of shots. Make sure to look into what you need for your shoot, say for example a landscape shoot, or a photo op.

You can also get yourself a zoom lens if you feel that you want to capture things from a distance. These are perfect for sporting events, wildlife shots, and even if you're a private investigator.

Macro lenses are perfect for those people who take pictures of things up close like flowers, insects, food, and many others.

Digital Photography Secrets

Taking Good Pictures?

I LOVE taking pictures. I take them of myself, of nature, of random objects, just anything. I love photography.

Right now, I'm using an Olympus Digital Camera D-490 Zoom, slightly older and it's definatly worn out. Batteries need to be changed after about two sessions of photo taking. It's only a 2.1 mega pixel.

I'm looking to buy a new digital camera that is not too expensive (under $200) but still works excellent and will provide me with years of use.

I'd also like to know the secrets to taking good pictures. I already know about moving closer to the subject rather then using zoom, but what are some others?

Thank you!

Hello. Good for you friend on loving photography... so do I! Presently the digicams I am using are the Kodak Z612 (with 6mp and 12x optical zoom) and the Panasonic LZ4. I lean more on the Kodak model, but previously I had been using a Canon digicam... which come with good reviews. I like my Kodak fairly well and it's done well when I took it to Washington DC. It was under $200, has a li-ion rechargeable battery and uses the good ol' standard SD flash. Should you want a film camera, I love my Canon EOS Rebel K2 kit which comes with the body and a 28-90mm lens. I've gotten some awesome shots with it. I recommend it highly, and I use Fuji film 400 speed. It's a great film and the high film speed is a great all around film for most folks. I recommend using 800 speed to use in museums and such with the flash turned off as it gathers more of the available light. Zoom can be real handy when getting shots of things where you cannot get closer or if you did would ruin the intimacy. I found a 75-300mm lens at a yard sale with an old Rebel G for $75!! The lens itself sells for $150 alone!!! So use the zoom when you need to as a back up plan alright? I think one of the fundamental thing to honing your photograph muse is to EXPERIMENT. Try different things out, don't be afraid to NOT take a shot because you don't think it'll work out so well. Do read books and articles on line and draw from the wealth of information. Remember to take shots VERTICALLY as well as the usual horizontal. Take shots that lend itself to one orientation and do it in the other. Do some shots while on your belly. Get you a good tripod with three way panning, a monopod (Velbon makes one for $20 that's great: UP4000), and also get a ballhead perhaps by Sunpak or Giottos. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get something that will do the job! Good luck.

Easy Digital Photography Classes!

Mastering your camera can be a long hard slog or it can be a fun and perhaps a profitable stroll. Everything depends upon how you learn to do the shot. Digital photography classes provide the answer that almost all people are searching for.

Here is the issue…

Nearly all of us get a brand new camera - we open the box - read simply enough in the manual to learn to turn it on and we start shooting away!

The problem being, that without any formalized, systemetized education, we customarily wind up just putting the camera on its automated settings and thinking that's "ok!"

It's not ok!

True the camera on its fundamental programmed settings can perform a useable job in trouble-free, basic situations, but there is a whole new, creative world out there that we're missing!

To get past the snapshot point - where we view our snapshot once and then "file it away" never to be seen again - to creating shots that get people to say "WOW"… We absolutely must take the camera off automatic and begin controlling the darned thing.

That's when we commence our trial and error, random strategy of trying to figure out all the varied knobs, dials and buttons. Some we'll learn use, some we are going to get a completely WRONG understanding of, and other options we won't ever even know exist.

The bad news is…

Using this trial and error tactic, we end up with gaping holes in our photo training. It's not that we are not smart enough to understand, it really is that we just do not know enough of what creative opportunities are workable to ask the correct questions.

There IS an easy resolution…

Take a formal course. Therefore, the materials are presented in a systematic logical manner which will plug many of the holes in out random education. It's surprisingly effortless and speedy!

We don't have to enroll within a degree program, there are tons of cheap internet programs where we can get the needed information on our own schedules and at our own pace.

When searching for a web based course, don't shy away from a course that starts in the very basic beginnings. It's startling how few of us truly understand the basics.

Two areas to avoid in the beginning…

Don't bother using the free "101 tips" form of information. That tends to be just more of a haphazard training we are trying to avoid. AFTER you finish your systematic digital photography classes, THEN is the perfect time for 101 tips sort of thing.

Avoid courses that cost many hundreds dollars…

There are many - top notch - courses that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. For the most part, they are far too involved for what the majority of us need. You can get into one of those if you happen to later decide you need to turn pro or really get into advanced techniques.

Like Goldilocks, you can also find online digital photography classes which are "perfect for you!"

Digital Camera Tips And Tricks

1

My digital camera was dropped in the sand..?

I let a friend use it for a moment at the beach, and she gave it back to me broken. She briefly dropped it in the sand, and the camera is very touchy to begin with, so with the ocean air and the dirt it stopped working. The lens is stuck out fully extended and will not retract. When I turn it on, it powers up to a black screen and cites a 'lens error'.
I have had a lot of problems with this camera in the past, but I NEED to use it tonight and so I was wondering if anyone knows of any tips or tricks for me to perhaps get it working again?
The camera is a canon powershot

Your friend should pay for a new camera because this one is toast.

Digital Night Photography Tips

Halloween Photography Tips

The best thing about Halloween is the variety of photos and subjects you can catch. From portraits to action shots to adorable infant photography, the possibilities are endless in this day of imagination. So, as much as possible, bring spare cameras to catch all the action right away. A digital compact camera will do for those moments when flinging out the DSLR are a tad too late.

Go out at Dusk

Although most of the fun during Halloween happens at night with the different parties and trick or treats, it is not the most ideal time to take incredible photographs of the holiday though. Low lighting is a bandit for taking great photographs, so make sure you go out before then. Natural light is still more preferable than what any prepared lighting can do, making costume details still visible.

Bring the right equipment

If not, bring an external flash and diffuser (you don't want the flash to overpower your shots) or a camera that has high ISO capabilities. And when using flash, make sure the background doesn't have any reflective surfaces as this tends to bring a glare. Bring a tripod as well since using high ISO (400 and more) tends to bring in a lot of digital noise, more so if there's a lot of movement from jittering hands.

Set the Mood

It being Halloween, set the mood of your photos and subjects by using low lighting, dark backgrounds and silhouettes. Classic Halloween shots of Jack-o-lanterns whether as background, accessory or main subject are also great starters. One secret to getting a great Jack-o-lantern shot, making it appear brighter and more photogenic is to stick in a flashlight. It's safer too.

Digital Portrait Photography

1
digital portrait photography
What is a self portrait in photography..?

I want some specific ideas of what a self portrait is. I don't want to do this wrong. Would like a detailed answer from someone in the photography field. btw this is digital photography.

A self portrait is a painting or a photograph you take of yourself. You can do this by setting the camera in front of a mirror, stand beside the camera, zoom in so you don't see the camera in the shot, and "fire away" until you get something you like. Or, you can do what millions of people do everyday, and just hold the camera out at arm's length in front of yourself, and press the shutter release button. Or, you can set the camera on a tripod (or just prop it up somewhere where it won't fall or where someone won't walk up and take it), and use the "self timer" function (if it has this feature). Press the button and you have 8 to 10 seconds to get in front of the camera in any pose you like before the shot is taken. REMEMBER: if you take unclothed shots of yourself, they may be seen by many people that you never intended. So, imagine your parents, teachers, etc. seeing these shots, DON'T TAKE THEM, and you won't regret it later. (Sorry, I assumed you're a student...if you're an adult, plug in "employer, wife, husband, minister, etc." for "parents, teachers, etc." in the last sentence.

Have fun with self portraits! Choose backgrounds that say something about who you are. Experiment with lighting, the angle of the sun or any light you're using, and the angle of the camera (whether the camera is low looking up at you or high looking down at you).

Good luck!

Basics Of Digital Slr Photography

1
basics of digital slr photography

What is a Digital SLR Lens Camera?

We all know the digital age has taken over as far as cameras are concerned. Most of us own a compact digital camera and can point it and click away and get reasonable photos. But how do we take it a step further? The big zoom lens cameras of the professional photographer always appeared a bit daunting to the ‘click and go’ photographer and the same still applies to the move from compact camera to SLR.

Firstly, what does SLR mean? It is an acronym for Single Lens Reflex. That basically means that when you look through your viewfinder you are seeing exactly what the lens sees. The advantages of a Digital SLR Lens Camera is that you can change the lens, that there is practically no lag time so you can take action photos, and digital SLRs have large image sensors that produce high quality photos.

Because a digital SLR gives better quality photos than a compact camera you should expect it to be pricier. In truth you can get a Digital SLR Lens Camera for about the same price as a top end compact camera. However, that is only where it starts, the prices can easily go into the thousands and it doesn’t stop with the camera. Because the lenses are interchangeable, you will need the right lens for your style of photography. You will also need a carry case or neck strap too. The digital SLR is not going to fit in your pocket like a compact does.

If you enjoy taking video as well as stills then it is more complicated using an SLR. SLRs usually don’t have auto focus in video mode so shooting a video would require manual focus. Some top end SLRs do have auto focus.

If you want to take a zoom photo with a compact camera you just push a button to engage the electronic zoom. With an SLR you have to use the right lens and manually zoom.

There are good and bad points to both types of cameras but in the end it is down to the type of photos you take and the quality you require from them. If you want to take professional looking photos, you want to have more control over your photos, you want action footage, you want lenses you can interchange and you want to take photos in dim light then an SLR is perfect for you.

However, if you want to be able to take your camera with you in your pocket or bag, be able to zoom at the click of a switch, and you are happy snapping away taking pictures then maybe a compact suits you better.

It really is a personal choice only limited by the size of your pocket.

i am looking for a new digital camera and i'm am not sure what is best for me. i shake really bad, so i need the image stabilization thing. and i am looking for a digital camera, not one of the big photography ones. something that takes sharp, good day and night pictures would be really nice. but the big thing is something that takes reaaaaaaaally sharp pictures that are not grainy. i know nikon is good, cause my mom has one of the photography cameras and it is amaaaaaaaazing. but too much and too big for me. any helppp?

ps. i am looking for something new, like off their website.

actually the "big photography" ones are not really big, Nikon has few entry level DSLRs which are really small, D40/40x, and D60, and they have VR (vibration reduction) on the lens.

by the way, shake may due to how you hold your camera, keep your arms/elbow right next to your body will help.

Learn Digital Photography - 4 Tips to Avoid Background Disturbance

Background has always been a challenge for a photographer when they are taking pictures and this condition is even more prominent among the digital photography beginners. If you are not careful, the background is going to steal the lime light from the subjects and distract your viewers' attention. The following tips are to show you how you can avoid common background disturbance.

1. Move the subject

Have you ever had the experience that you thought the background will be perfect for the photo shoot but it looks awkward when you place your subjects in it? Some thing just doesn't feel right.

When that happens, you can move the subject around to see whether it gives the right picture. Sometime you can change the feeling of the pictures by moving the subject around.

But what if you can't move the subject?

2. Change the angle

If that is the case, probably you want to consider changing the shooting angle. That means you will want to move around your subjects, circling your subjects, taking picture from down to up or get high to shoot down to the subjects.

Besides omitting the awkward background from your pictures, shooting from different angle can also help to you to get different perspective of your subjects. You might be able to capture something astounding under the specific angle and background.

3. Create own background

Sometime you will have to shoot under the background that is totally out of the theme you want to create in your pictures. If you are doing indoor photography, there are a lot of commercial backgrounds available online.

And if you are given the option, try to rearrange the movable objects in the background so that it compliments the subject. You can even add something to the background so that it gives a unique feeling to the pictures.

4. Blur the background

Blurring the background is one of the best ways to bring out the details of the subject and this is often done to express the focus in the pictures.

And the fastest way to do this is to use wide aperture to create shallow depth of field. Depth of field simply means how focus is the surrounding of the subject in the picture. And shallow depth of field simply means the surrounding or in this case, the background is blur.

Since the background is blur, this is will automatically draw your viewer's attention to the clear subject in your picture.

Photography - How to Sell Your Photographs

Selling your photographs to make a little extra side money is an appealing idea. But how realistic is it? As it turns out, quite realistic, provided that you are not hoping to get rich doing it.

Let me say right off the bat that if you are hoping to get into photography and live off the proceeds of your image licensing royalties, that's a whole different ball game. Like every other artist in the world, you will need an extraordinary game plan and the requisite talent to bring it off. I cannot help you with that.

But if you are already taking pictures on a regular basis, and at least a fraction of them are very good, then it makes sense to consider licensing them. Like I said, you are unlikely to get rich doing this, but you might earn enough money each year to outfit with a new high-end camera body, or that lens you fantasize about but which you otherwise would never go so far as to buy.

So why is it not possible to get rich selling your photos?

It is simply a matter of numbers. Most of the popular online image exchanges - the ones that will allow anyone capable of creating quality photos to upload their material and license it out - sell images for about a dollar a piece, and of that they will pay you perhaps 25 cents (maybe 50 cents if you are really lucky). If you are thinking that this is a pretty poor deal for the photographer, you are right. But this does seem to be par for the course, so there may be some operational expenses to running an image exchange that are not immediately obvious. Either way, that's the current reality of the business.

So let's consider the numbers again. The reason that images typically sell for a dollar is that the buyers are webmasters looking for low resolution filler images for their web properties. They will happily fork over one or two dollars for an image, but would frown at paying five dollars. You may get hundreds of people willing to pay you a dollar for an image before you can find a couple willing to pay five dollars for a high resolution version that could be printed on a coffee mug. You will find even fewer buyers - magazine and book picture editors, and the like - who are prepared to pay twenty dollars for the highest available resolution version.

So you will make your money from the masses, and at 25 cents a pop you will need 4000 licensed instances of your images before the image exchange will cut your first check for $1000. You might manage this by uploading 100 images that average 40 downloads, or you might upload just 4 mind-blowing images that average 1000 downloads a piece. It will come as no surprise that most people make their money by creating as many good photographs as they can. They do not rely on their ability to generate that rare master photo that everybody must have.

Most of the online image exchanges will reject your images if they do not meet the high standards that the exchange has set for itself. So be smart and peruse the exchanges to get an idea of the quality that is required. Your images, in addition to being captivating enough to make people want to download them, also need to be technically perfect. High resolution images with imperceptible noise levels and perfect color balancing are the minimum technical requirements. Get used to shooting at ISO 100, even for low-light shots that require a tripod, mirror lock up and cable release.

The editors of each exchange will have their own standards, of course, and what gets rejected at one site may be accepted elsewhere. So don't give up immediately if you have a door slammed in your face. Van Gogh could not convince anyone to buy even one of his paintings in the course of his own lifetime. That did not mean his pictures were worthless. But picture editors might not see where you are coming from if they do not recognize the market that you are targeting. For this reason, it pays to figure out beforehand what is selling well before you submit your first portfolio. After that you are likely to meet less resistance if you veer off in a slightly different direction.

It is also a good idea to specialize the themes of your photography. If you take particularly good landscape shots, and build a body of landscape images, your clients will be impressed by your body of work when they are selecting that first image of yours, and they will likely seek you out again when they require a similar image.

Other online image exchanges that operate in a fashion similar to iStockPhoto include Fotolia, ShutterStock, and DreamsTime. All are worth checking out. They are free to join and take a commission on your licensed images.

Another tack you can take, if you don't like the idea of licensing your images so cheaply, is to go with an online photographic service that allows you to set your own pricing. These are a little harder to find. One such site is PhotoStockPlus which targets event photographers. If you photograph weddings, parties, special occasions, then you are their primary demographic.

PhotoStockPlus offers a subscription service and gives you your own little e-commerce store where you can sell plain photographic prints, as well as have them emblazoned across, for example, a T-shirt, a coffee mug, or a mouse pad. The idea is that you add a markup on top of the wholesale price that PhotoStockPlus charges for supplying these items with your images on them, and that markup is passed onto your clients. All you do is upload the photos, set the markups, and then point people toward the site. The rest is hands-off. The cost of the service to you is reasonable, with rates that start at less than $30/month.

Regardless of the route you take to monetize your photography, actually doing something about it makes a lot of sense. You can either let your best images sit on your PC year after year, where they will likely get lost in the course of time, or you can put them out into the world where they will have a chance to earn you both a little fame and some recurring income.

Can I use Car lights/bulbs as lighting for photography?

I'm completely new to photography, and I've only just been learning tips and tricks off the net. At the moment I'm looking for cheap options for equipment. If I connected a car headlight halogen bulb (preferably in the reflective casing) to a 12v source and set it up, on full beam, with a reflection umbrella, will this suffice for at least a single light source setup?
Has anybody tried this?

You CAN use ANYTHING for a light source. Even the moon if you want. The trick is getting your exposure and white balance to match it. You can do this, but I suggest you get a light meter for exposure settings and not knowing the temp of the light(s), you will need to do a custom white balance in the camera or use a grey card for reference, shoot in RAW, then adjust against the grey card.

If you are shooting film, you may need something like an 80A filter with daylight balanced film to get close to the correct color.

Digital Photography Business - Ideas to Leverage the Web to Grow Your Business

Your website and other social marketing tools offered on the Internet makes growing your digital photography business a lot more versatile. You can leverage a number of different social web tools or just stick with your website. Here are some ideas to help you boost your business and have some fun too.

It's important to remember that people will be searching for photographers. Do a search for your type of business and work with a SEO expert to get your listing at the top of the page when you search for "city name photography". That way you are the number one source for photography in your city. Many families and some business owners don't know any photographers so they use the Internet to find one to do business with. During the holiday seasons many families take family portraits. This is a great time to capitalize on all that business. Make sure your website has a page or two optimized for holiday and family portraits.

Another great use of the Internet is Facebook marketing. Many professional photographers now have a page on Facebook that they advertise to their friends. Here your friends and customers can write testimonials for the photographs that you took for them. You also can message all your clients with special pricing on sittings or offer coupons that they can use to come back to your studio or website.

One of the easiest and funnest ways to interact with new and existing clients is through event photography. Find out who coordinates social events an the local high school. Leverage events like football games, proms, commencements, drama and dance recitals and take photographs of kids.Don't forget to show pictures of the Mom or Dad cheering for their kid.

Hand out business cards while you are at the event. Do not forget to put your website URL on your business card. Find the parents and set up an appointment to look through the photos. Sit down with the family and take a look through all the photographs you shot.

Families may have a hard time choosing what shots to keep. When you make the pictures viewable online on your website they can have friends and family review the photos and pick favorites.

You will generate revenue off these events, but just as importantly, these families will start to pass around your business card to others interested in your services. What parent wouldn't want to work with the same photographer who took those beautiful photographs of their daughter at a dance recital? Or the Dad doing a 'wave' at the football game?

Using the Internet to find new customers and marketing for your digital photography business is a great way to make money. The more time you put into it the more people will recognize your business name and come to trust you as an expert in the industry.

Chroma key Photography Tips and Tricks

Chroma Key photography refers to the process of digitally replacing the background image in a photograph with any other selected image. You also call it as Green Screen Photography. Photographers deploy this technique to create a unique and striking cinematography.

Techniques to add effects to photographs:

It is a fun loving activity to embellish your photographs with visual effects. A photographer should first photograph scenery that he wants to replace with the background of a subject. After you have collected quality pictures, you can now place your subject against the green or blue screen background in the studio. However, a photographer should ensure that the subject should not wear blue or green color used in the background. The foreground subject as well the background should have proper lighting. You can use light of around 250 to 600 watts. This is to avoid any kind of dark shadows on the face of a subject or dark spots on the background screen. A well-ironed background screen cloth properly masks the selected image at the background. A photographer should deploy a high quality camera that focuses a subject clearly. A clearly focused subject and background image makes a picture attractive. After taking the picture, you can then replace the background image digitally.

A photograph can use overlay effects. To use overlay effects you need to capture and record an image. Edit the image and merge it with your photograph. Example, if you want to show your subject sitting in the midst of flowers, you can merge the picture of flowers around the subject. You can also make a subject invisible by covering his face with the cloth of a blue or green color that you use in the background. One can even make a person giant by making the buildings or other surroundings small digitally. A person can even use a cloning effect by taking two separate images of a subject. You can use the second image in the background in such a way so that these two images together give a cloning effect. There are many other effects that you can use with chroma key photography and make extensive use of creativity.
