My digital camera was dropped in the sand..?

I let a friend use it for a moment at the beach, and she gave it back to me broken. She briefly dropped it in the sand, and the camera is very touchy to begin with, so with the ocean air and the dirt it stopped working. The lens is stuck out fully extended and will not retract. When I turn it on, it powers up to a black screen and cites a 'lens error'.
I have had a lot of problems with this camera in the past, but I NEED to use it tonight and so I was wondering if anyone knows of any tips or tricks for me to perhaps get it working again?
The camera is a canon powershot

Your friend should pay for a new camera because this one is toast.
