Online Stock Photography - a World Where Pigs Fly

I remember back in the early 90s when my brother John called me up on the phone one day and explained that he had found a niche in digitally manipulated photography.  He said he was poised to make a good deal of money with it, but he couldn’t find any good help.  He knew that I had been into computers and thought maybe he could get me to work for him helping him digitally manipulate his photography.



John was a professional photographer doing mainly stock photography, and had discovered some new software called Adobe Photoshop.  John found that he could use Photoshop to fix problems with photos taken at an expensive photo shoot that would have had to been re-shot.  He also found that he could use the software to create photographs that just could not be shot in real life.  This was a great thing for his stock photography business.



At the time I had just had a business fail, and I was supporting my family as an injection molding press operator, earning near minimum wage working the graveyard shift.  John lived in San Francisco at the time and his studio was located where AT&T stadium is now. I was living in Stockton California, a good hour and a half commute each way.



Well John offered me $50.00 an hour to come work for him in his studio in S.F., and I asked him what time he wanted me to report for work in the morning!



For the next 5 years I worked for my brother doing digital manipulation for stock photography, digital retouching, and lots of digital art and photography for advertising agencies.  I remember one of my first projects was to put an egret’s wings onto a pig for a stock photo of flying pigs. 



Another time I brought my pet three-foot-long iguana to the studio and we photographed him. In those days we used film, and after developing the film we would use a drum scanner to digitize the photo, and then use either Photoshop or Live Picture to manipulate the photos.  We turned the iguana into a fire-breathing dragon.



One job we did for Mother Jones magazine involved replacing Madame Chiang Kai-shek’s head with Hillary Clinton’s head in a photo of Madame Chiang Kai-shek chatting with Eleanor Roosevelt in the rose garden at the White House.  We were later told that Hillary had it framed and put on her desk.  We also heard that she was at first confused because she did not recognize the outfit she was wearing in the photo.  Go figure.



We specialized in “conceptual” stock photography, producing images such as money trees, time flies – (a watch with wings),  an image of the earth in space but made of currency, dollar bills flying out the window, and that kind of thing.  We also did photo-shoots for fortune 500 companies and used digital techniques to produce advertising images.  John acquired an incredible reputation for producing the best stock photography of its kind, and all of the ad agencies knew him well. He was a huge success. He created a line of images he called “Animal Antics” using images of animals doing odd things like skateboarding and riding bikes.  The images were the basis for a highly successful line of greeting cards.



I finally grew tired of the commute and of sitting in front of a computer all day with an art-director telling me what to do. I went back to being an inventor, and John capitalized very well on his pioneering venture into digital stock photography, digital manipulation and funny pictures of animals.



Back then John was the first and for some-time the only stock photographer using digital manipulation to produce stock photos. There was no internet, and stock photography was pretty much limited to ad agencies with big budgets.



In those days he sold stock photography through Tony Stone Images, and The Stock Market.  Now Tony Stone is gone as is The Stock Market and Getty Images and number of other large stock agencies have replaced them.  Royalty free photography, widespread use of digital manipulation, and the internet are changing the face of the industry. Times have changed and John recently told me that the future of stock photography was online.



Mom and Pop business’s are going on the internet to find stock photos for their newsletters, advertising both online and hard copy, brochures, trade show booths, etc.  He feels the future of stock photography is online catering to the masses with low cost stock photography. There is a huge market for all types of photos for everything from photos for websites to pictures for brochures, to pictures for printed merchandise like cups and baseball caps.  Most people now searching for stock photos don’t even know what a stock photo is. They search for “pictures of pigs” or “shark pictures”.



To take advantage of this burgeoning new market for stock photos, today’s upcoming photographers (and the old ones too) need to get their work online where it can be found and purchased.



Once again John is on the leading edge of his field.  John has now launched a new website to address the blossoming online small business stock photo market.  Somewhere on his website there are photos of fire-breathing dragons in a world where pigs do indeed fly.

Explain what Aperture and Shutter Speed is in digital photography?

I need to write an explanation of shutter speed and aperture in photography.
Also need to explain how Aperture effects an image taken in portrait and landscape modes.
Have to give an explanation and some examples of when adjusting shutter speed would be useful.

Aperture is the lens opening, which controls how much light comes through the lens.

Shutter speed is how long the shutter exposes the sensor/film to the incoming light.

The aperture, along with the lens focal length and sensor size, affects the amount of area in focus in front of and behind your subject, called "depth of field."

Depth of field is important because of those times you may want a large area in focus (a landscape shot) or a shallow area in focus (say, for a portrait). A wide aperture or big lens opening makes for shallow depth of field, while a small aperture makes for more depth of field or more area in focus.

As for adjusting the shutter speed, it could be useful for stopping action (a fast shutter speed) or for creating special effects (motion-blurred water) or to achieve a particular aperture to get the depth of field you want (shutter speed and aperture together control the exposure. Change one variable and you have to change the other).

So, for your homework, you now have to hope I told you the truth about everything or you can copy and take the risk that everything I said or some of what I said is a lie...Or you could just double-check what I said and then re-write it into your own words.

What tools do I need for opening a home digital photography studio?

I'd like to start a small home digital photography studio but with minimum budget (around 3000 $) but I feel its impossible. also What are the main equipments needed plus any recomended websites portrait snaps training?
Am shocked! spending that much? Well thank you all for help and I'll think I keep up with an SLR ( D40 Nikon) alright?

The D40 is a good entry level DSLR. Westcott makes an entry level lighting kit that even has a floormat to tell you where to set the lights. It goes for about 500 for the 3 light set up with stands umbreallas and backdrop. Using the mat you will get what I call the "department store lighting set up" pretty traditional but its a good start and as you learn you can vary the setup. These are not top of the line lights and in a year or two you will outgrow them; but again a goot starter kit. You could do the same things with strobes and lightstands on your D40 . If you want to do location shoots go this way instead of the westcott set up which is better suited to an indoor location.

Next go for a good prime lens for portraits. On the D40 if you get a Nikor 50 mm 1.8 or better yet 1.4 you have a crop factor of a 75mm lens ( which gets you in the bottom end of what is traditionally seen as a portrait lens) and an aperature that will give you good bokeh. The 1.8 can be gotten at a good price the 1.4 will cost you a bit more.

Go to the Nikon site and look at the creative lighting system for using strobes for location portraits. Then invest some time to go to strobist.com and go thought the lighting 101 section.

Take notes and make cheat cards to remember what lighting setups worked well with your equipment. If you look a picture, find you really like it, and do not know how you set it up on lighting position and ratios its hard to re-create the effect on demand

With digital its 0s and1s so the cost is minimal so before you take shots for hire practice practice practice on your family, neighbors anyone you can get to sit still. You must know your equipment cold. Its almost embarrasing to the profession the amount of people who want to call themselves photographers and they cannot work the equipment they have and seem unwilling to put in the time to learn to do so

Contact your local camera club and camera store, they often have lighting classes. Community colleges and parks and rec also sometimes do this. Look in photo magazines for seminars and workshops near you to hone your skills.

What Digital Photography Entails

The camera has really changed from the old flash bulb cameras to the new digital camera’s that provide digital photography. When you use a digital camera, you are bound to get clear and precise photographs but this depends on who takes the photo.

Should I buy the Fuji Finepix S9600, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 or the Nikon Coolpix P5100?

I am a complete amatuer at photography but have always enjoyed using my point and shoot and have had decent results with my home/holiday snaps and am keen to go one step further. I am taking a digital photography course in about a months time, nothing too complicated just a 6-8 week course to learn all the basics etc. So I am looking to buy a half decent what they seem to call bridge camera and seem to have almost narrowed it down to the 3 above. So just looking for some advice really or should go for one of the above or should I spend another £70+ and go for a Cannon G9 or something else, I'm confused and very indecisive. All advice appreciated, thanks..

Despite their generic labelling as “bridge” cameras, they're actually quite different, in terms of what they offer:

- The Panasonic FZ18 basically offers an almost insanely long optical zoom, although it's optically stabilized and (compared to other 18x-zoom cameras) has somewhat better optical quality; but the ISO performance is relatively poor, because that huge zoom mandates a small sensor that can't possibly offer better ISO quality.

- The Nikon Coolpix P5100 follows the opposite idea: a short optical zoom, and a large sensor (not quite DSLR-size, but still clearly larger than the Panasonic FZ18's) that allows it to have a quite better ISO performance, therefore making the camera much more able for liw-light situations (especially since the P5100 also has an optical stabilizer, and a pretty effective one, at that).

- The Fujifilm S9600 would be a compromise... sort of. It's actually larger than the Panasonic FZ18, and yet has a more modest 10x optical zoom (not stabilized, though)... so it can afford to have a sensor even larger than the Nikon P5100's, therefore an even better ISO performance.



All in all, the Fujifilm S9600 is the best of the three, as long as you don't consider its size and weight a problem, and you don't really need as much zoom as the Panasonic offers.

How come digital photos don't look as good when it's set as a computer background?

I'm just getting into digital photography. I noticed that when I try to set some great photos as by computer backdrop, it seems that the quality takes a hit? The photos don't look bad, but just not as crystal clear as they do with the windows slideshow (sometimes they appear over-sharpened). Why is that and is there any way to fix this? Thanks so much!!!
PS: I have a Rebel XT (8mp).
Also, I use JPeg, best quality, largest size.

this is a very common situtaion....large files when compressed lose detail.....u can probably use even the microsoft photoeditor to fix this......use the resize option found in the Image menu.....set it to u'r monitor pixels......most common is 1024x768....and that's it.......u will get the same clarity as u see in the slideshow......don't forget to save an original copy of the file since the same file is saved on...

Does anybody know what equipment and software fashion photographers use? Similar to David LaChapelle's work?

Im interested in fashion photography, so anything you guys know can you share with me

Fashion photographers will most likely use just serious studio cameras: a Hasselblad or Mamiya with a digital back. Serious photographers will always use fixed lenses (or prime lenses). This means that they have no zoom. This also means that the lenses are incredibly sharp, fast, and free of distortion.

Most of what you see will be coming from extensive Photoshop work. Everything from simply adjusting the levels of the color channels to smoothing skin to removing blemishes to lengthening necks and evening out eyes will be done here.

The real quality in photography comes in landscape photos. One uses a large format field film camera (like a Tachihara or Horseman) that can be adjusted in numerous ways to achieve maximum sharpness. The negatives produced from these cameras are 4" x 5" to 8" by 10" and yes, that is in inches. That means that the negatives will be the size of good-size prints from your digiral camera. The digital equivalent of 4" x 5" scanned decently is roughly 500 megapixels.

Minus zero degree digital photography, what can one do to keep camera functioning?

How do you achieve 'Minus Zero degree' ?


To keep your camera functioning in extremely low temperatures, take these basic measures-

Keep at least one spare battery and store it in your inside jacket pocket so that the body heat keeps it warm. After taking few shots from the battery in the camera, exchange the battery and keep doing so till you are done with your day's photography.

If there's snow falling, use a cover to keep your camera dry.

When you take your camera back to your room and out, don't expose it to extremes of temperatures. Let it slowly adapt to the change in temprature so as to avoid precipitation inside the camera.

If you are using a photography jacket, wear it on top of all the other clothes and keep the filters you intend to use in the most outside pockets.

Digital photography camera recommendations?

I'm looking to buy my first digital photography camera. Since they are pretty expensive & it's my first one, I'm looking to buy a used one off of Ebay. Are there any recommendations on make/model? I want it for nature photography.

I only have two recommendations for you.

1) Be REALLY careful buying used cameras, especially for a first camera.

2) If you actually want to do photography with your camera, get one that has manual controls. Serious photography never happens in automatic mode. If you just want a camera for taking snapshots at parties and stuff though, any camera will do.

Where can I find a model for my photography class?

I am currently taking a photography class at my college and for our final project I need to find a model. Seeing as how I am a college student I do not have alot of money and need any help. I am located in the Southeastern Wisconsin area.

What I used to do in college is put 'wanted ads' in the theater building. Be honest and upfront in your intentions so you don't sound like you're trying to get a date with them. Encourage them to bring someone else or a friend to make sure they're comfortable during the shoot, and offer free prints for their time (TFP).

I would schedule about 2 shoots a week just to practice. Actors are great in front of the camera, and they like to practice as well, especially since you're both still in college.
