Stock Photography

FRESA Y LECHE by mirwav

Online Stock Photography - a World Where Pigs Fly

I remember back in the early 90s when my brother John called me up on the phone one day and explained that he had found a niche in digitally manipulated photography.  He said he was poised to make a good deal of money with it, but he couldn’t find any good help.  He knew that I had been into computers and thought maybe he could get me to work for him helping him digitally manipulate his photography.

John was a professional photographer doing mainly stock photography, and had discovered some new software called Adobe Photoshop.  John found that he could use Photoshop to fix problems with photos taken at an expensive photo shoot that would have had to been re-shot.  He also found that he could use the software to create photographs that just could not be shot in real life.  This was a great thing for his stock photography business.

At the time I had just had a business fail, and I was supporting my family as an injection molding press operator, earning near minimum wage working the graveyard shift.  John lived in San Francisco at the time and his studio was located where AT&T stadium is now. I was living in Stockton California, a good hour and a half commute each way.

Well John offered me $50.00 an hour to come work for him in his studio in S.F., and I asked him what time he wanted me to report for work in the morning!

For the next 5 years I worked for my brother doing digital manipulation for stock photography, digital retouching, and lots of digital art and photography for advertising agencies.  I remember one of my first projects was to put an egret’s wings onto a pig for a stock photo of flying pigs.

Another time I brought my pet three-foot-long iguana to the studio and we photographed him. In those days we used film, and after developing the film we would use a drum scanner to digitize the photo, and then use either Photoshop or Live Picture to manipulate the photos.  We turned the iguana into a fire-breathing dragon.

One job we did for Mother Jones magazine involved replacing Madame Chiang Kai-shek’s head with Hillary Clinton’s head in a photo of Madame Chiang Kai-shek chatting with Eleanor Roosevelt in the rose garden at the White House.  We were later told that Hillary had it framed and put on her desk.  We also heard that she was at first confused because she did not recognize the outfit she was wearing in the photo.  Go figure.

We specialized in “conceptual” stock photography, producing images such as money trees, time flies – (a watch with wings),  an image of the earth in space but made of currency, dollar bills flying out the window, and that kind of thing.  We also did photo-shoots for fortune 500 companies and used digital techniques to produce advertising images.  John acquired an incredible reputation for producing the best stock photography of its kind, and all of the ad agencies knew him well. He was a huge success. He created a line of images he called “Animal Antics” using images of animals doing odd things like skateboarding and riding bikes.  The images were the basis for a highly successful line of greeting cards.

I finally grew tired of the commute and of sitting in front of a computer all day with an art-director telling me what to do. I went back to being an inventor, and John capitalized very well on his pioneering venture into digital stock photography, digital manipulation and funny pictures of animals.

Back then John was the first and for some-time the only stock photographer using digital manipulation to produce stock photos. There was no internet, and stock photography was pretty much limited to ad agencies with big budgets.

In those days he sold stock photography through Tony Stone Images, and The Stock Market.  Now Tony Stone is gone as is The Stock Market and Getty Images and number of other large stock agencies have replaced them.  Royalty free photography, widespread use of digital manipulation, and the internet are changing the face of the industry. Times have changed and John recently told me that the future of stock photography was online.

Mom and Pop business’s are going on the internet to find stock photos for their newsletters, advertising both online and hard copy, brochures, trade show booths, etc.  He feels the future of stock photography is online catering to the masses with low cost stock photography. There is a huge market for all types of photos for everything from photos for websites to pictures for brochures, to pictures for printed merchandise like cups and baseball caps.  Most people now searching for stock photos don’t even know what a stock photo is. They search for “pictures of pigs” or “shark pictures”.

To take advantage of this burgeoning new market for stock photos, today’s upcoming photographers (and the old ones too) need to get their work online where it can be found and purchased.

Once again John is on the leading edge of his field.  John has now launched a new website to address the blossoming online small business stock photo market.  Somewhere on his website there are photos of fire-breathing dragons in a world where pigs do indeed fly.

What Digital Photography Entails

The camera has really changed from the old flash bulb cameras to the new digital camera’s that provide digital photography. When you use a digital camera, you are bound to get clear and precise photographs but this depends on who takes the photo.

Digital photography has been around for quite a while now and has actually phased the old camera’s that were in the market. Even though you might still see the old film cameras most people are opting for the newer technology and therefore turning to digital cameras.

This new age of digital photography out phased the old ways of processing film, however there are still some photographers who like to use film. Many of those who use film are actually photographic artist who often showcase their photos in galleries.

The main reason that this new form of photography has become a big hit is because there are various ways that you can use the digital camera. Some of this ways include directly printing out your photographs by connecting it to your printer. You can also use your computer to store your photographs and then print them later. You can also take them to a photo store and have them processed and you can get full blown photos.  Nowadays you will find that camera’s do not need film and are instead full of memory that stores the images taken.

Many changes came with digital cameras like the fact you don’t need rolls of film anymore and you don’t have to keep winding the camera to rewind the roll. Another difference that came with digital cameras is that you don’t have look through a hole to see how the picture will come out. There is a screen for looking and you can snap a photo any time as long as your batteries are charged well.

Learn A New Language - Should You Learn French Or Spanish?

If you want to learn a second language, you should learn French or Spanish. Why? Because French is the most commonly spoken language in the world after English...

French is seen by many as the language of love. I don't know why but French seems to be a synonym of romance. It is true that Paris is a beautiful place, don't you want to have a walk on the champs Elysées?

Spanish is also a language that you should consider. French is my native tongue, but Spanish sounds more romantic than French to me.

Something that you will find very interesting if you choose to learn any of these too languages is that once you know one, it will be really easy to learn to speak the other. I said speak, because writing might be an issue.

Suppose you decide to study French for example. Most of the Spanish word are similar to French words because both languages come from the Latin (nobody speak Latin anymore, but you can still study it in France).

Let me give you an example: Let translate the word "photography" in English: in French, this word will become 'photographie'. In 'Espagnol' (Spanish), the word "photography" is said: "fotografía" (note the accent on the 'i').

So let's recapitulate: Photography ==> photographie ==> fotografía.

These words are really close, you don't think?

Another example: In English, the word 'school' becomes 'école' in French, and 'escuela' in Spanish.

Again, these words seem to have the same root. There are hundreds of words like these.

So if you are hesitating between Spanish and French, don't be stuck: Learn French and Spanish, or Spanish and French.

You will feel much better when you master two or three languages, and who knows you may become a professional translator.

By the way, look at this: Translation in English becomes Traduction in French and finally, traducción in Spanish.

There are hundreds of examples... Another question that you may ask is: is Spanish easier Than French? We will see that in another article.

Selecting the Best Free Stock Photography Websites

When looking for good free stock photography websites, there are several factors to keep in mind. Many companies offer excellent stock photographs that are available for download for free or for a minimal fee. However, not all stock photography websites are designed the same. Some of the important features to look for when searching for a free stock photography website include: an easy to use search engine, the size and resolution of the photographs available, how the photographs are licensed, how often is the site updated, and which photographers are showcased.

Easy use to search engine
Having an easy to use search engine is an essential characteristic of the best free stock photography websites. A large collection of the best photographs is of little use if you can't find the type of images you need. Some of the best sites include keyword searches that allow you to quickly identify the photographs most suited to your needs.

Size and resolution of available photographs
Some stock photography websites offer free images that are relatively small. Depending on your particular needs, you may need larger photographs. In some cases, it is worth it to pay a small per use fee or even a monthly subscription fee to have access to a wide variety of large, high resolution, good quality images.

Types of licensing
Stock photographs can be licensed in a number of ways. For example, royalty-free photographs typically mean that the image can be used in a number of ways without having to pay further royalties. However, royalty free is not synonymous with free and some websites may charge a one-time fee or a monthly subscription fee for the use of these images. Rights-managed images, on the other hand, specify the ways in which the image can be used. For example, a rights-managed image may be restricted in certain geographic areas or may only be used during a certain period of time. Extended rights images are yet another alternative where the client can purchase the right to use the image multiple times with no time limit for use. The best option will depend on your needs. For example, if you need several images, it may be worthwhile to consider purchasing a monthly subscription that permits the use of multiple images with an extended rights option.

How often is the webpage updated?
The best free stock photography websites will be updated frequently. This is important because it means there are fresh images available for use. New and innovative images will draw attention, while overused images will have the opposite effect.

Who are the photographers?
Finally, when selecting the best free stock photography website you may consider who the photographers are. Well-known photographers produce high quality, striking images. However, much can also be said for amateur photographers and up and coming artists. One interesting twist on stock photography is offered by photorogue.com where amateur photographers submit images to meet specifications provided by the client.

The best free stock photography websites will meet these basic criteria, allowing you to select from a number of high quality images while staying within your budget.

Learn Digital Photography Now - How to Make Money From Photography

By trade I'm a web developer and my wife is a graphic designer. Together we began selling our photographs through the internet over two years ago as a way to earn a little extra cash from something we enjoyed doing. At the time we only had a little 4 megapixel point-n-shoot camera but my wife knew about editing photos from studying Design in college. At the time we thought we knew about photography as well, however we now know what we didn't know then.

When we began selling our photos online we only earned $16 in our first month. Given that this was something we were passionate about we persisted and, with lots of research we raised the amount to $270 in six months. Since it was only a part time hobby we honestly didn't expect it to earn so much money as soon as it did, but our early success convinced us of the possible potential and we immediately purchased in a digital SLR. It has been over two years later and we're now making around $600 each month with a modest portfolio of around 700 photos listed with eight agencies. We're still considered hobbyist photographers who create stock photos in our spare time.

Who sells photos in the microstock market? I've reached hundreds of other microstock stock photo sellers through the internet and have been amazed at the variety of individuals who are contributing to this market, each with a similarly impressive variety of reasons. There are retired couples who simply want to see their photos published and I have met people who make tens of thousands of dollars each month. For some microstock is their job and for others, like myself it is simply a portion of my overall income. Amazingly, one of the largest groups of contributors are photography students - both those who have chosen photography as their career and hobbyists who study for fun.

Why is microstock so good for students? There are three main reasons: freedom; money; and education.

To participate with Microstock is free and there are no set work hours, no bosses and most importantly, no due dates. Microstock pays money which is great given that photography isn't a cheap endeavor. If you are interested in learning about the commercial side of photography Microstock is also a great way to educate yourself. What better teacher than a global market of photo buyers?

Isn't microstock 'bad' for the industry? If you have been interested in selling stock photography for a while you may have already found that microstock is controversial. Since the concept works only with the Internet and high quality digital cameras it's still relatively new. Because of that there are still many professional stock photographers with strong feelings about the impact microstock is having on the industry.

Many of the world's most successful stock photographers that I have spoken with have said they're not noticing any impacts on their business from microstock. These professionals know that their photos compete on quality and not price (microstock photos sell cheaper but in higher quantity) and they also know that there will always be buyers interested in the top level of the market, regardless of the price.

It's also makes sense to assume that the hundreds of photographers who now earn a living with microstock have displaced some 'traditional' stock photographers. This is a natural phenomenon and happens with any technological change as big as the Internet and digital photography and it's completely understandable that those on the receiving end are not happy about it.

To be sure, Microstock has brought new buyers to the market. Prior to Microstock small businesses, charities and bloggers weren't big purchasers of stock photos when each image cost $350 or more. Now that blog size images are $1 and print size images are $10, you can imagine how sales have increased.

So how much can I earn in microstock? The amount depends on both the quality and quantity of photographs you can produce. Those who work full time with microstock and have a portfolio of 7,000 high quality images or more can easily earn over $20,000 per MONTH! On the flip side, those contributors who have only a handful of images earn just a few dollars. Like me, you'll most likely find yourself between these two extremes.

I typically will earn a little under $1 per photo per month. On the internet you can find monthly earnings figures and links to portfolios. With some research you can easily compare your portfolio or photography skills with others to determine more or less how much you could expect to earn with your photos in the microstock market.

Is microstock easy? Not at the beginning, it isn't. Many online agencies require a test submission which is generally stricter than their typical review process. Microstock agencies also review submissions based on what sells, which is images that are super sharp, noiseless and commercially appealing. Because of this initial review many of the established and highly skilled photographers experience early rejections and quickly dismiss the microstock opportunity. You can start with some of the middle tier agencies which don't require you to pass a test. In doing this you can easily get an idea of what types of photos are being accepted and which ones sell well. After that, it's relatively easy to start earning money.

Doing some research you can find examples the best selling photos. Typically most are simple shots taken with the intention of selling for stock, but with no more preparation that being in the correct spot with your camera. Many photos can earn over $30 per month though the potential success will vary between agencies.

It's also not easy to create above-average success. The average per-photo earnings of many of the top microstock contributors can be up to ten times what I currently make, so you can imagine the difference in the quality and appeal of the photos they produce. They also need to repeat this success many times to create a portfolio large enough to raise their earnings above average.

How can I improve my chances of success? These are my top tips for people getting started selling their photos in the microstock market:

Managing your expectations can often sound easier than it actually is. A typical sales pitch might read, "click here to start earning money from the photos sitting idle on your computer". That's not exactly realistic and you'll soon quit if you begin with this expectation in mind. Do your own research to figure out what sells, create these photos well, and be smart about how you contribute. Concentrate on workflow.

If you wish to contribute many photos it makes tons of sense to have an efficient workflow so you don't waste time doing unnecessary and repetitive tasks. Do your research and refine your process so you can put a quality product into the market as efficiently as possible. Microstock is business. If you're more of an artist than an actual commercial photographer you may want to seriously consider if you and microstock are a good match. Don't get me wrong, artistic photos will sell in the microstock market, but not nearly as well as commercial photos.

Research. Don't stop with the few ideas I have already given you. It is important to get all your questions answered before you begin so you save time and don't accidentally do anything that doesn't work to your advantage. There are blogs written for people selling photos in the microstock market, read these as well as other sites.

Cameras and photography: Way to create moments

Photography can be the passion for millions of the fellow people. Photography is a vast area in it owns sense, it is not just the matter of simple clicking only. Professional photographers only knows that how much it is complicated to bring out good quality images and videos. If clicking the still images have been that much easy then we shall have not been hiring videographers and photographers on the occasion of marriages and birthday parties.

But still at to some context we are standing nearby to the professional capturers and all is made possible by high defined digital photo cameras manufactured by Kodak, Sony, Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Canon, Olympus and so on.

They are modified with with high camera capacity which could capture a clear picture even in a negligible light. All is done clearly with the options of ' object focus, candle light pictures, subject focus, zoom-in or zoom out' etc.

Photography cameras can be purchased at affordable price amounts buy purchasing it through online shopping portals. It is because whenever a merchant organizes a sale of the cameras through websites then it attaches many of the advantageous discount offers with them.

Few years back, we hardly found only Black and Silver colors in digital cameras but today we can see uncountable numbers of colorful digital cams.

Best Photography cameras shows the features of capturing good quality images by using digital zoom- in or zoom -out through which one can bring the subject closer or far depending on the requisites of that particular moment. Digital cameras stores the images in the ASCII code form and after it the captured objects can be viewed as a full picture.

Todays digital cams are very handy and durable. People can take it with themselves anywhere and anytime. Digital technology has made our normal lives very modern. One can easily click images and after storing it in our laptops or Personal computers we can cherish our good times forever. This means there is probably a book or two on this list your photographer would love. Save yourself some time by using this list as a shopping list. Your photographer will love you for it.

1. National Geographic Image Collection by National Geographic, Michelle Anne Delaney, Maura Mulvihill (5.0 out of 5 stars)

Behind National Geographic's worldwide reputation as a powerhouse of photography lies one of the finest, most extensive, and most unique graphic resources on Earth: the National Geographic Image Collection. 2. The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3 by Scott Kelby (4.3 out of 5 stars)

This book truly has a brilliant premise, and here's how Scott describes it: "If you and I were out on a shoot and you asked me, 'Hey Scott, I want the light for this portrait to look really soft and flattering. How far back should I put this softbox?' I wouldn't give you a lecture about lighting ratios, or flash modifiers. In real life, I'd just turn to you and say, 'Move it in as close to your subject as you possibly can, without it actually showing up in the shot.'

3. VisionMongers: Making a Life and a Living in Photography by David duChemin (4.9 out of 5 stars)

A book for any photographer who's ever felt compelled to combine their craft with the world of commerce and make the transition to becoming a vocational photographer. More like a sketchbook of ideas and wisdom than it is a system to get rich quick on photography, VisionMongers takes a look at the changing landscape of professional photography and the various journeys that can be taken to get there.

4. Within the Frame: The Journey of Photographic Vision by David duChemin (4.8 out of 5 stars)

A book about finding and expressing your photographic vision, specifically where people, places, and cultures are concerned. A personal book full of real-world wisdom and incredible images, author David duChemin (of pixelatedimage.com) shows you both the how and the why of finding, chasing, and expressing your vision with a camera to your eye.

5. The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos by Michael Freeman (4.6 out of 5 stars)

Design is the single most important factor in creating a successful photograph. The ability to see the potential for a strong picture and then organize the graphic elements into an effective, compelling composition has always been one of the key skills in making photographs.

6. The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2 by Scott Kelby (4.6 out of 5 stars)

In Volume 2, Scott adds entirely new chapters packed with Plain English tips on using flash, shooting close up photography, travel photography, shooting people, and even how to build a studio from scratch, where he demystifies the process so anyone can start taking pro-quality portraits today! Photo magazine choices?

Okay, so I've been looking at these two magazines.
http://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/photography/practical-photography-magazine.html
http://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/photography/digital-photo-magazine.html

I've bought a Digital Photo one before, and I liked it. I'm just wondering whether the first one is better?
Does anyone have a preference between these? I'll be getting a subscription as a gift at Christmas, just not sure what to get.

If you know of any other Photography magazines that you prefer, let me know? (:
Help appreciated.

Both the mags you've linked to are very informative and both are worth buying and reading. I subscribed to Digital Photo for 3 years 2006,7,8 bought the binders and I have these on my bookshelf as a reference and I do look into them and use them. When I decided to stop buying DP I bought PP for a year or so. Digital Photography is very much into tutorials, Practical Photography is more into reviews and articles. If you want to learn about digital manipulation go for DP, otherwise, PP.
Having said all that, all the info you could ever wish for is available free online. Just google and there you are. If you want to get into photography seriously, check out the Royal Photographic Society. There is also a RPS forum which you can join without having to be a RPS member.
http://www.rpsforum.org/search.php?searchid=1100550
Hope this link works for you! If you join the RPS you get a magazine sent to more or less monthly which far surpasses anything you'll find in the newsagents.

Advantages of Using Digital Photography

Although this is the age of digital photography, one can still purchase cameras that use film. The key question is to ask why it is advantageous to use digital photography. What are the advantages of digital photography over the ordinary film camera? You will still many people that prefer using film not because they don’t know any better but because they just haven’t taken the time to weigh the advantages or are unfamiliar with modern technology much as the person who is afraid of computers. Anything new and different is scary for some people but to make things easier for those people it is important to look at the advantages of one over the other.

Before the era of digital photography many people lost beautiful pictures because they failed to take the film to be developed or lost the film until it was too old to guarantee quality processing. Keep in mind that film is only good for a limited period of time so if you misplace the used film or don’t take it for processing within a specific time, you will lose some of the quality of the photographs. With digital photography there is never a concern about the film expiring because there is no film. There is no need to worry about processing the photographs in a certain period because you can take the memory card at any time to get printed pictures or you can download the memory card to your computer and print your own photographs at any time you so desire.

Another advantage of digital photography is being able to see the photograph before you print it. Many times with film cameras the lighting was not right or we failed to focus correctly and the picture was blurry or otherwise distorted. With digital photography you can see the picture right then and if it is not perfect, you can delete that pose and begin again. This avoids the disappointment of losing a perfectly good pose because of focusing or exposure errors. You also do not have to take additional shots just to make sure one of them comes out the way you are hoping.

Digital photography has made picture taking for both amateurs and professionals easier. Even professional photographs can be delivered quicker because of digital photography and allow the customer to view and choose the pictures almost immediately instead of having to wait days for proofs and then another week or two for the pictures themselves.

FREE Digital Photography Tips - Taking Night Digital photography Pictures

If you are organizing on performing some evening photos I have a few of organizing guidelines you will call for to maintain in brain prior to taking your evening photographs:

Initial, you will have to have a excellent viewpoint;

And 2nd, you will need to have both a tripod or a strong bottom to location your digicam on. The viewpoint - this depends a tiny on the sort of shot you are suitable following. My preference is for someplace that is over the soil (a fixed of steps, for instance), but not at all times. At times the extremely very best images can be had at floor degree.

I advise a tripod or powerful bottom merely due to the truth that your camera's shutter will be open for various mere seconds and you undoubtedly want to make confident that your digital digital camera is completely still in the course of that time.

You will also require to make positive you safe your digital camera onto the tripod. If you can't discover a sturdy surface area to rest your electronic digicam on you can usually take into account propping it up with some issue like a bag or jumper.

As soon as you have your digital camera in place you want to fixed your shutter velocity for a couple of mere seconds. I would recommend you begin with about 15 seconds.

If you are unable to handle the shutter pace, established it to "night" mode.

As in the near future as you have each tiny point organized (photographic camera on a secure surface and self timer primed) you are ready to contemplate your photographs.

Preceding to urgent the shutter button you ought to first observe your scene. Is each and every point in it that you are hoping for? If you are looking to get streaking headlights do you see any site visitors all around?

As in the near future as you are joyful with issues, press the shutter button.

Your self timer will count lower. Unique Be aware! - If you are waiting for some matter to show up in your scene, you will have to have to bear in mind that your shutter tempo will have to count lower initial - time for this.

When the shutter clicks it is genuinely opening up so you will demand to hold out close to. And hold out round, and hold out . . . until it closes yet again. Hold in intellect that this could If you are setting up on undertaking some evening pictures I have a number of setting up suggestions you will have to have to maintain in head preceding to taking your night pictures:

First, you will need a beneficial viewpoint;

And second, you require either a tripod or a stable foundation to place your digicam on. The viewpoint - this depends a small on the sort of shot you are soon after. My desire is for somewhere that is above the soil (a fixed of actions, for instance), but not often. Sometimes the greatest pictures can be had at ground degree.

I advise a tripod or sound foundation merely due to the actuality that your camera's shutter will be open for various seconds and you certainly want to make certain that your camera is totally even now for the duration of that time.

You will also will need to make sure you secure your digicam onto the tripod. If you can't find a strong floor to rest your camera on you can usually consider propping it up with a thing like a bag or jumper.

As soon as you have your digicam in area you want to fixed your shutter velocity for a couple of secs. I would recommend you commence with about 15 seconds.

If you are unable to manage the shutter speed, collection it to "night" mode.

As soon as you have every little thing arranged (digicam on a stable surface area and self timer primed) you are prepared to take your photos.

Just before urgent the shutter button you ought to initial observe your scene. Is everything in it that you are hoping for? If you are hunting to get streaking headlights do you see any targeted traffic close to?

When you are joyful with details, press the shutter button.

Your self timer will rely lower. Unique Be aware! - If you are waiting for some thing to seem in your scene, you will need to keep in mind that your shutter pace will have to rely down initial - time for this.

When the shutter clicks it is truly opening up so you will require to wait around. And wait around, and delay . . . till it closes yet again. Don't forget that this could acquire a couple of secs.

Then wait around some much more. Due to the fact of the lengthy exposure digital cameras take longer than usual to procedure the photo, so your preview on your camera's LCD screen may well take a whilst to show up.

This is just my opinion, but here are a few of items that I assume make a great night time images shot:

Neon lights Streaks of automobile headlights and tail lights Accessible gentle For both of these you need to have to strategy a minor in advance. Uncover an region where you can safely photograph neon lights.

The first point you do is locate your sound location, or put your camera onto a tripod, and then acquire a few test images. If you opt for neon lights be conscious that they flash so you will want to hold the shutter open for a while in order to catch all the flashes.

For photographing streaks of automobile headlights and tail lights you will obviously want to come across a area that has a excellent bit of site visitors, but yet again, be safe in your choice of locations.

Attempt to get anything in the background too - streaks of mild on their own can be a tiny boring!

Then acquire your shot.

The longer the shutter is open, the additional streaks you will capture. And of course, the a lot more traffic there is, the far more streaks will show up too!

Offered gentle also has a component to play in producing a beneficial nighttime images shot.

There are instances when a scene looks its greatest when you arranged it amongst inky-black skies. There are also times when a small gentle works greatest, so photographs just prior to dark actually sets in are worth a look at as well.

Strive both, and see what captures the impact you are soon after greatest.

You also will want to play with a variety of shutter speeds since there are occasions you will discover that a 10 second exposure gets the appear you are right after. Occasionally you might will need up to a minute.

If you practice you will shortly get a feel for what you will require for any given circumstance.

How to Get into Stock Photography Modeling

Stock Photography Modeling

The popularity in coffee shop culture coupled with the rise of the internet has seen an explosion in the last few years of publications requiring stock photography.

Stock photography publications can include literally any printed or photographic or internet material. North West Model Agency’s project managers have worked with a wide selection of publications all requiring stock photography models.

What is Stock Photography Modeling?

North West Model Agency considers stock photography modeling to be just as important as any other modeling discipline. It is easy to define in that it can be literally used for anything.

Stock photography modeling is used to ‘fill in’ or ‘round off’ publications and is used in many magazines where an article has been written about a given subject and they need an image to ‘fill in’ the space.

This can range from family photos to single high impact images. The scope is so huge and sometimes so specialized that it takes a professional agency such as North West Model Agency to match the model, the photographer and the assignment together.

Publications can also include adverts, websites, brochures. The list is almost limited to the imagination of the marketing department. The advantage stock photography modeling has over other forms is the lack of height, age, or weight restrictions. This makes it an ideal career for girls who do not fit the “sample” size required by fashion houses.

Remember that stock photography modeling can include just about anything. There are plenty of stock photography websites out there on the internet, have a look and you will see the sheer range of possibilities to get you going.

Technology in Stock Photography Modeling

With the onset of digital photography it is possible to get very high definition (commonly called Ultra High Quality or UHQ) stock photos almost instantly.

Because North West Model Agency use the most up to date technology UHQ Editorial photos turn around can be very quick. Combine this with North West Model Agency’s state of the art graphic studio, images can be blended, altered and emailed for a printed or online publication in minutes.

North West Model Agency’s studio can also deal with new media and the internet. This is the fastest growing area of Editorial modeling, and one which many ‘old school’ models and photographers do not understand. North West Model Agency can guide you through the advantages of having an online portfolio and how to promote your image. It’s to our advantage that we make our models as well known as possible!

Pitfalls of Stock Photography Modeling

Make sure your modeling agency and photographer are reputable. North West Model Agency vets it’s photographers before using them and will insist upon a client brief (so you know what you will be doing) before shoots and a chaperone during shoots.

Also be aware that many modeling agencies will charge you to make a portfolio on the pretence of work, though they never have any intention of giving you any assignments.

North West Model Agency will not charge you for a stock photography portfolio. They may refer you on to a preferred professional photographer if you wish to have stock photography added.

Stock photography modeling competition is not as intense as other modeling professions, though the gains are not usually as good. We will assign you to the most suitable role and will always make sure you are comfortable with the assignment before you undertake it. Editorial modeling is a good place to start when modeling as it allows you to ‘cut your teeth’ in an industry.

We ask all our models to fill out a North West Model Agency Feedback form when they have completed an assignment, so we constantly monitor our clients and models expectations.

As with all modeling stock photography modeling is not easy. North West Model Agency advises all want to be stock photography models to really think about the lifestyle it involves. Travel is inevitable though sometimes great fun. Although the ideal place for an assignment is a warm studio or a sunny beach it is always worth remembering that some of the best shots out there were taken on a cold day with bad weather looming.

Future of Stock Photography Modeling

North West Model Agency believes the future of stock photography modeling lies very much in cyber space. It is a growth industry and looks set to keep on growing.

Stock photography modeling is changing, make no mistake it has to if it is to survive. Stock photography modeling has languished in the prehistoric age for far too long. This can be partially attributed to the industry being formed on the old print press method of publication (calendars, magazines, tabloids). It is no secret that print is in decline and many modeling agencies are missing out on the new media and an increase in broadband access.

North West Model Agency is highly experienced in online promotion and the use of photographic material on the internet.

North West Model Agency’s one stop shop approach to stock photography modeling is a fantastic starting point for potential and experienced stock photography models alike.

Conclusion

If you’re fun loving, outgoing, and cannot do (or simply not interested) in other forms of modeling it is possible make a career from stock photography modeling.

North West Model Agency’s approach is honest and open, but remember that you’ll need to have a thick skin to survive in stock photography modeling.

Sell photos made in 3D program?

I have been a freelance photographer for a while. Now I can't afford to travel outside of town in order to find worthy photos so I have been working with 3D art. I have a copy of the 2008 Photographer's Market but I was wondering if they would except photos that were actually created in a program instead of taken with a camera or are there other places that except such art, either as art or stock? I am aware of microstock photography companies but I want to try to sell somewhere that I may make more of a profit. Also, ebay doesn't work for me. I am talking about uploading digital images ;)

You will only know if the companies in the Photographer's Market book accept 3D art, by asking each company.

I am going to say no, as the title to the book is Photographer's Market, not Digital Art Market.

Digital Photography Photos

For digital photography, is a SHQ photo adequate for enlargements or do I need to shoot everything as a TIFF?

I have an 8MP SLR camera. Taking TIFF pictures I'm told is the "gold standard" however each picture takes up 23 meg of space. If I shoot picture in SHQ (compressed format) I can get many more pictures on the compact flash but I'm worried about photo editing and compression deteriation if I choose to blow the picture up to poster size. Is this a legitimate concern?

Depending on your camera, I'll assume that it captures in a RAW format if it will capture a tif. I don't have much experience in digital capture of tiffs, because the few times I have, I didn't like the results. In RAW format, you are guaranteed exceptional control over editing, provided you have the proper software.

I've seen (and made) decent prints from x-fine/SHQjpegs, and they look decent enough-- though any upsampling will do something derogatory to an image-- and large prints should be(in my opinion) just an easier way to allow someone to look at an image from a few feet away. Gestalt takes over, and no one picks up on the pixels-- unless you started with a crap lo- res file in the first place. However, shooting RAW can slow up shooting-- so I shoot HiQjpeg ALOT-- but in order to prevent that file from further decay, when you load image files to your computer, convert them to tiffs with your editing software and keep them that way there. Then you can resize for print and web off of copied, derivative files. Your other option is to buy lots of big memory cards, which you should have a few of anyway.

The real rule is 'garbage in garbage out'. If you don't have a great exposure, composition and tonality and other 'intangible' things taking place with in a photo-- making it bigger won't make it look better. With an 8MP camera, you should be capturing with great color and tonal quality, which makes even 'just okay' pictures look nice no matter what size. And if you don't have a large format printer of your own, whatever service bureau you use, will have interpolating software that will scale your original file up that does some phenomenal algorithmic juju. (thank the gods for engineers like Mandelbrot and successors)

Take your favorite shot that you have and get a 20x 30 done and see what you think! Good luck.
