Stock Photography

FRESA Y LECHE by mirwav

Online Stock Photography - a World Where Pigs Fly

I remember back in the early 90s when my brother John called me up on the phone one day and explained that he had found a niche in digitally manipulated photography.  He said he was poised to make a good deal of money with it, but he couldn’t find any good help.  He knew that I had been into computers and thought maybe he could get me to work for him helping him digitally manipulate his photography.

John was a professional photographer doing mainly stock photography, and had discovered some new software called Adobe Photoshop.  John found that he could use Photoshop to fix problems with photos taken at an expensive photo shoot that would have had to been re-shot.  He also found that he could use the software to create photographs that just could not be shot in real life.  This was a great thing for his stock photography business.

At the time I had just had a business fail, and I was supporting my family as an injection molding press operator, earning near minimum wage working the graveyard shift.  John lived in San Francisco at the time and his studio was located where AT&T stadium is now. I was living in Stockton California, a good hour and a half commute each way.

Well John offered me $50.00 an hour to come work for him in his studio in S.F., and I asked him what time he wanted me to report for work in the morning!

For the next 5 years I worked for my brother doing digital manipulation for stock photography, digital retouching, and lots of digital art and photography for advertising agencies.  I remember one of my first projects was to put an egret’s wings onto a pig for a stock photo of flying pigs.

Another time I brought my pet three-foot-long iguana to the studio and we photographed him. In those days we used film, and after developing the film we would use a drum scanner to digitize the photo, and then use either Photoshop or Live Picture to manipulate the photos.  We turned the iguana into a fire-breathing dragon.

One job we did for Mother Jones magazine involved replacing Madame Chiang Kai-shek’s head with Hillary Clinton’s head in a photo of Madame Chiang Kai-shek chatting with Eleanor Roosevelt in the rose garden at the White House.  We were later told that Hillary had it framed and put on her desk.  We also heard that she was at first confused because she did not recognize the outfit she was wearing in the photo.  Go figure.

We specialized in “conceptual” stock photography, producing images such as money trees, time flies – (a watch with wings),  an image of the earth in space but made of currency, dollar bills flying out the window, and that kind of thing.  We also did photo-shoots for fortune 500 companies and used digital techniques to produce advertising images.  John acquired an incredible reputation for producing the best stock photography of its kind, and all of the ad agencies knew him well. He was a huge success. He created a line of images he called “Animal Antics” using images of animals doing odd things like skateboarding and riding bikes.  The images were the basis for a highly successful line of greeting cards.

I finally grew tired of the commute and of sitting in front of a computer all day with an art-director telling me what to do. I went back to being an inventor, and John capitalized very well on his pioneering venture into digital stock photography, digital manipulation and funny pictures of animals.

Back then John was the first and for some-time the only stock photographer using digital manipulation to produce stock photos. There was no internet, and stock photography was pretty much limited to ad agencies with big budgets.

In those days he sold stock photography through Tony Stone Images, and The Stock Market.  Now Tony Stone is gone as is The Stock Market and Getty Images and number of other large stock agencies have replaced them.  Royalty free photography, widespread use of digital manipulation, and the internet are changing the face of the industry. Times have changed and John recently told me that the future of stock photography was online.

Mom and Pop business’s are going on the internet to find stock photos for their newsletters, advertising both online and hard copy, brochures, trade show booths, etc.  He feels the future of stock photography is online catering to the masses with low cost stock photography. There is a huge market for all types of photos for everything from photos for websites to pictures for brochures, to pictures for printed merchandise like cups and baseball caps.  Most people now searching for stock photos don’t even know what a stock photo is. They search for “pictures of pigs” or “shark pictures”.

To take advantage of this burgeoning new market for stock photos, today’s upcoming photographers (and the old ones too) need to get their work online where it can be found and purchased.

Once again John is on the leading edge of his field.  John has now launched a new website to address the blossoming online small business stock photo market.  Somewhere on his website there are photos of fire-breathing dragons in a world where pigs do indeed fly.

Selecting the Best Free Stock Photography Websites

When looking for good free stock photography websites, there are several factors to keep in mind. Many companies offer excellent stock photographs that are available for download for free or for a minimal fee. However, not all stock photography websites are designed the same. Some of the important features to look for when searching for a free stock photography website include: an easy to use search engine, the size and resolution of the photographs available, how the photographs are licensed, how often is the site updated, and which photographers are showcased.

Easy use to search engine
Having an easy to use search engine is an essential characteristic of the best free stock photography websites. A large collection of the best photographs is of little use if you can't find the type of images you need. Some of the best sites include keyword searches that allow you to quickly identify the photographs most suited to your needs.

Size and resolution of available photographs
Some stock photography websites offer free images that are relatively small. Depending on your particular needs, you may need larger photographs. In some cases, it is worth it to pay a small per use fee or even a monthly subscription fee to have access to a wide variety of large, high resolution, good quality images.

Types of licensing
Stock photographs can be licensed in a number of ways. For example, royalty-free photographs typically mean that the image can be used in a number of ways without having to pay further royalties. However, royalty free is not synonymous with free and some websites may charge a one-time fee or a monthly subscription fee for the use of these images. Rights-managed images, on the other hand, specify the ways in which the image can be used. For example, a rights-managed image may be restricted in certain geographic areas or may only be used during a certain period of time. Extended rights images are yet another alternative where the client can purchase the right to use the image multiple times with no time limit for use. The best option will depend on your needs. For example, if you need several images, it may be worthwhile to consider purchasing a monthly subscription that permits the use of multiple images with an extended rights option.

How often is the webpage updated?
The best free stock photography websites will be updated frequently. This is important because it means there are fresh images available for use. New and innovative images will draw attention, while overused images will have the opposite effect.

Who are the photographers?
Finally, when selecting the best free stock photography website you may consider who the photographers are. Well-known photographers produce high quality, striking images. However, much can also be said for amateur photographers and up and coming artists. One interesting twist on stock photography is offered by photorogue.com where amateur photographers submit images to meet specifications provided by the client.

The best free stock photography websites will meet these basic criteria, allowing you to select from a number of high quality images while staying within your budget.

Digital 3d Photography

1
digital 3d photography

Low-Tech 3D Photography With Any Digital Camera

First let's talk about the camera. Any digital camera will do because this isn't a hardware based technique. For my example I used the SD4000 Canon digital camera. While the camera is of little concern there are two items on the "must-have" list for this technique. You must have software like Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or an equivalent program capable of separating images into color channels. Next you need to own a set of 3D glasses with red and blue lenses OR one each Red (R2) and Blue (80A) lens filters.

Now for the secret of Anaglyph low-tech 3D photography, are you ready? Consistency… always take the primary pictures in the exact same way.

Position the subject between five and eight feet in front of the camera. Ideally the subject's background should be another eight to ten feet behind the point of focus. If the background is too far behind the subject there will be little 3D effect, if the background is too close it will be portrayed as a confusing mess of red and blue. Use your feet and move the camera closer or further away rather than use the zoom lens.

The real magic trick is how the dual images are captured. Stand with your feet just under shoulder width apart. Put all of your weight onto your left foot, compose and shoot the image. Then shift all of your weight onto your right foot and compose and shoot the second image. With composition the goal is to keep the subject centered in the viewfinder. Tip: If your subject is a person the point of focus is the eyes and not the nose!

This shifting of the camera from left to right approximates the position and distance between two eyes. The difference between left and right camera position should be around four to six inches. The greater the distance between positions the less likely that foreground objects will be rendered correctly in the final composite image. It will take experimentation and practice to become proficient at this technique.

Next the image must be manipulated on a computer into an Anaglyph composite. For this example I will discuss the steps used with Photoshop products to create the final composite.

Open the pair of Left / Right images in Photoshop. Here is where consistencies pays off, if you capture the images first left then right every time there is never any guess as to which image file is which. The lower numbered file is always the left eye view.

Next create a new blank image the same size and shape as the photo images. Alternately add a white solid color layer to the Right image and make it the background layer. Using the Move tool click and drag the Left image onto the Right image while holding down the Shift key. At this point you will have a single image file with three layers: white background, Right image and Left image.

Click on the top most layer (Left image) to make it active and then use the Opacity control to change this layer to abut 50% opaque. This allows you to see the Right image through the Left image. Use the Move tool to position the top Left image around and align the subject in both images. (Hint: if it's a person here is where we try to align the eyes).

Once the main subject is aligned return the top layer to 100% Opacity. Since the edges of the two images are no longer aligned any image space without an overlapped image will only detract from the 3D effect. We need to crop this extra image information out of the final composite. Click off the eyeball icon for the middle (Right) layer, make sure that the top (Left) layer is active and use the Crop tool to remove everything that is not this layer from the composite.

While the top layer is still active open the Levels tool (Ctrl+L). In the middle top of the Layers dialog box is a pull down menu, use it to select the Green channel. Now at the foot of the graph space are two boxes, on the right the box has a zero and on the left the box has the number 255. Change the 255 to a zero. Then use the drop down box and select the Blue channel and again set the upper value to zero. You will now have a bright red image. Click the OK button on the Levels tool

Click off the eyeball icon for the top (Left) layer and click on the eyeball icon for the middle (Right) layer. Once again open the Levels tool (Ctrl+L) however for this layer we only need to select the Red channel and set its upper value to zero. Once the layer adjustment has been completed click the OK button.

There is only one step left. Make sure that the eyeball icon is turned on for all three layers and then click on the top (Left) layer to make it active. In the Layers box at the top is another drop down menu. Use it to find and select the Screen option and we're finished! The image on screen should look like a composite slightly out of registers with Red and Blue / Green elements. Put on your 3D glasses (or use a Red camera filter in front of your left eye and a Blue filter in front of your right eye) and enjoy your first 3D picture.

Save the image as a JPG or TIF, print it out with your inkjet or send it to the lab to have a real photo print made. If your HDTV supports plugging in an SD memory card save a copy of the image to an SD card and see your 3D creation on the big screen!

New photographer first camera! Need some help though! Nikon D200?

Hi people of yahoo!
I am brand-new at photography and just received my first DSLR, a Nikon D200, used.
I have a nikorr 18~55mm lense and a 52mm polarizer. My initial question is when I take a picture, no matter what I do (besides turn on flash.. but it's at the perfect exposure without it) it's blurry! I focus, and it looks perfect through the viewfinder, but in the end it's blurry when I do playback, is it the mode I'm in? Please if anyone can help I would really appreciate it!

Also, I have a mac with iPhoto, but will it take my camera on this computer? I'm afraid if I attach it that I will potentially mess up my new camera.. Also if anyone can recommend a better, more advanced photo editing software I can download for free, add links into your answer!

You maybe getting camera shake. The shutter speed is too slow if the light is not good enough. Open up the aperture until you get an exposure of at least 1/60 sec, which is roughly what you can get away with handheld in low light, unless of course there's electronic stabilization used. Secondly using a faster ISO speed (400/800/1600 etc) will help, although you'll lose quality. Thirdly a polarizing filter will reduce light getting into the camera by a couple of stops. So if you don't need to use a polarizer, take it off. A replacement UV or Skylight filter will protect the lens elements and not reduce light passage.
The last resort would be to use a tripod to steady the camera. That way you can use slower ISO speeds and smaller apertures.

I use a Nikon D70 (which is as old as the Ark in digital camera terms) with the same lens as yours and have no problems downloading to a Mac. So with the D200 you should have no worries.

I'm not sure what free imaging software is available for the Mac. Gimp for PC is supposed to be quite good. It might be worth investing in Photoshop Elements 9. It's cut down Photoshop for a fraction of the price. It always gets top marks in reviews.

Nuove Tendenze: Il Calendario Personalizzato

Simple Online Photography Courses!

If you have just acquired a new camera - or you've finally decided that it's time you learned how to get pictures out of your old one - online photography courses can be a fast and basic path to mastering your camera.

The problem is that there are so many online photography courses…how do we choose?

The easy way to think of the problem is to consider how much time you're willing to ante up to your photography education.

there's options ranging from online college level classes that need multiple hours daily of study, and several thousand dollars in tuition…

To free strategies you'll discover (and forget) in a matter of minutes.

What to do?

You should first examine your desired result in studying the information.

Are you concerned with learning enough - and devoting the needed time and cash to become a pro shooter?

If that is the case, the extensive college level courses are your best option.

If you just desire to learn one little thing …like a cute pose to employ the next time you take a picture of your family - a few free tips in photography would do the job.

For the majority of us, the middle option tends to be optimal. We need one of the online photography courses that're low cost, yet systematically structured and will plug up any holes in our photo education - while teaching us new ideas.

Most of all, it has to be engaging, simple to understand and it can't take too many hours out of our daily schedule. AND, we have to see immediate improvement in our photography or we will never finish the course.

Whatever route you select, the first step is to locate a course that recommends using a photo notebook or journal. It's disappointing how few courses do and it is one of the most valuable learning tools you can use!

Virtually ALL the best photographers keep a photography journal ! A notebook is without doubt the quickest route to mastering your camera, and you will notice almost instantaneous results.

Here is the way you do it...

First: obtain a little notebook you will be able to store inside a camera bag. The huge 3 ring binder is just too bulky and you will NOT want to lug it around. Something like one of the steno notepads is perfect.

Second: prior to each photo make a note of what you want the final result to be and make a stab at at the suitable camera and lens settings.

Third: make the photo.

Fourth: Compare the end results with your creative vision. If you were right on, paste the photo in your notebook. Now you can replicate that picture any time you want just by looking in your notebook.

Fifth: If it wasn't what you were trying to create try to work out what went astray and re-shoot. Within just a few attempts you will have the photo you want AND will have discovered more about creating photography than you'd imagine.

Warning - As online photography courses go, I'd stay away from the courses that don't require that you maintain a shot journal.

What to look for in a new Digital SLR?

I want to get deep into photography, and plan on going to college for it. We have a Casio Elixim EV-7 7.2mp Point and shoot at the moment. It takes good pictures, but I want to purchase a Digital SLR with at least 8mp. I want more control and I want to learn how to use more manual settings and learn more about the different aspects of Photography. So what should I look for when searching the sites for a Camera? Also is there a good site to get good free classes or information on how to use the manual settings, and the overall use of a camera with a Digital SLR or Digital Point and shoot.?

Congratulations on considering a DSLR. Above all, when considering a digital SLR, you must consider that you will be the person using it day in and day out. Therefore, you must feel comfortable using the camera, regardless of megapixels. After all, if a camera is so uncomfortable to use that it sits in it's case all the time, it doesn't matter how nice of a camera it is. My first piece of advice to you is to go to your local Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. and actually touch the cameras, hold them in your hands, and take a few pictures with it, adjusting the zoom and focus. Once you find something you like, then start looking at the details. If you intend on doing a lot of cropping, look for a camera with 8 megapixels or more (Nikon D40x, Canon Digital Rebel). If that's not a consideration, you can save hundreds of dollars by purchasing a camera such as a Nikon D40, which is a six megapixel camera.

Also remember that DSLR images are significantly larger files than standard point-and-shoot camera images - upwards of 1.5-2 MB each. Therefore, look for a high-speed (you'll thank yourself later) memory card that is either 1 or 2 GB.

As far as websites for everything digital, visit http://www.kenrockwell.com. Hope this helps!

FREE Digital Photography Tips - Taking Night Digital photography Pictures

If you are organizing on performing some evening photos I have a few of organizing guidelines you will call for to maintain in brain prior to taking your evening photographs:

Initial, you will have to have a excellent viewpoint;

And 2nd, you will need to have both a tripod or a strong bottom to location your digicam on. The viewpoint - this depends a tiny on the sort of shot you are suitable following. My preference is for someplace that is over the soil (a fixed of steps, for instance), but not at all times. At times the extremely very best images can be had at floor degree.

I advise a tripod or powerful bottom merely due to the truth that your camera's shutter will be open for various mere seconds and you undoubtedly want to make confident that your digital digital camera is completely still in the course of that time.

You will also require to make positive you safe your digital camera onto the tripod. If you can't discover a sturdy surface area to rest your electronic digicam on you can usually take into account propping it up with some issue like a bag or jumper.

As soon as you have your digital camera in place you want to fixed your shutter velocity for a couple of mere seconds. I would recommend you begin with about 15 seconds.

If you are unable to handle the shutter pace, established it to "night" mode.

As in the near future as you have each tiny point organized (photographic camera on a secure surface and self timer primed) you are ready to contemplate your photographs.

Preceding to urgent the shutter button you ought to first observe your scene. Is each and every point in it that you are hoping for? If you are looking to get streaking headlights do you see any site visitors all around?

As in the near future as you are joyful with issues, press the shutter button.

Your self timer will count lower. Unique Be aware! - If you are waiting for some matter to show up in your scene, you will have to have to bear in mind that your shutter tempo will have to count lower initial - time for this.

When the shutter clicks it is genuinely opening up so you will demand to hold out close to. And hold out round, and hold out . . . until it closes yet again. Hold in intellect that this could If you are setting up on undertaking some evening pictures I have a number of setting up suggestions you will have to have to maintain in head preceding to taking your night pictures:

First, you will need a beneficial viewpoint;

And second, you require either a tripod or a stable foundation to place your digicam on. The viewpoint - this depends a small on the sort of shot you are soon after. My desire is for somewhere that is above the soil (a fixed of actions, for instance), but not often. Sometimes the greatest pictures can be had at ground degree.

I advise a tripod or sound foundation merely due to the actuality that your camera's shutter will be open for various seconds and you certainly want to make certain that your camera is totally even now for the duration of that time.

You will also will need to make sure you secure your digicam onto the tripod. If you can't find a strong floor to rest your camera on you can usually consider propping it up with a thing like a bag or jumper.

As soon as you have your digicam in area you want to fixed your shutter velocity for a couple of secs. I would recommend you commence with about 15 seconds.

If you are unable to manage the shutter speed, collection it to "night" mode.

As soon as you have every little thing arranged (digicam on a stable surface area and self timer primed) you are prepared to take your photos.

Just before urgent the shutter button you ought to initial observe your scene. Is everything in it that you are hoping for? If you are hunting to get streaking headlights do you see any targeted traffic close to?

When you are joyful with details, press the shutter button.

Your self timer will rely lower. Unique Be aware! - If you are waiting for some thing to seem in your scene, you will need to keep in mind that your shutter pace will have to rely down initial - time for this.

When the shutter clicks it is truly opening up so you will require to wait around. And wait around, and delay . . . till it closes yet again. Don't forget that this could acquire a couple of secs.

Then wait around some much more. Due to the fact of the lengthy exposure digital cameras take longer than usual to procedure the photo, so your preview on your camera's LCD screen may well take a whilst to show up.

This is just my opinion, but here are a few of items that I assume make a great night time images shot:

Neon lights Streaks of automobile headlights and tail lights Accessible gentle For both of these you need to have to strategy a minor in advance. Uncover an region where you can safely photograph neon lights.

The first point you do is locate your sound location, or put your camera onto a tripod, and then acquire a few test images. If you opt for neon lights be conscious that they flash so you will want to hold the shutter open for a while in order to catch all the flashes.

For photographing streaks of automobile headlights and tail lights you will obviously want to come across a area that has a excellent bit of site visitors, but yet again, be safe in your choice of locations.

Attempt to get anything in the background too - streaks of mild on their own can be a tiny boring!

Then acquire your shot.

The longer the shutter is open, the additional streaks you will capture. And of course, the a lot more traffic there is, the far more streaks will show up too!

Offered gentle also has a component to play in producing a beneficial nighttime images shot.

There are instances when a scene looks its greatest when you arranged it amongst inky-black skies. There are also times when a small gentle works greatest, so photographs just prior to dark actually sets in are worth a look at as well.

Strive both, and see what captures the impact you are soon after greatest.

You also will want to play with a variety of shutter speeds since there are occasions you will discover that a 10 second exposure gets the appear you are right after. Occasionally you might will need up to a minute.

If you practice you will shortly get a feel for what you will require for any given circumstance.

What should I learn next?

Hi,

I can't spend 1 day without learning new stuff in my free time.
I recently finished a Maya 3D graphics designing online course, I'm really good with computers, like programming, graphics designing, running servers etc..
I also took courses in Digital Photography, Music Composing/playing guitars, Kung Fu self defense, Phones' Operating Systems, Biology ( Planning to get into a med. school ) and my brother just graduated from an Aviation Academy so I took all his books and finished them about 2 months ago.

Now, I was about to take a C++ programming course, and I found out it's really hard, so I decided to put it on hold for now. I also thought about Yoga..

I need suggestions on what I should learn next.
All answers are very appreciated!

Sarah
@Zarn, What is Python for ? I've heard of it but I never got the chance to know what it's used in..

Try learning Python. For a programming language, it is rather friendly to beginners.

Python is a scripting language that is used for all sorts of things. It has in many ways taken the place of pearl as a sort of 'digital glue' to keep things together. It isn't used much in performance-critical applications, but other than that it is used extensively in science for developing models and proof-of-concept applications.

How to Get into Stock Photography Modeling

Stock Photography Modeling

The popularity in coffee shop culture coupled with the rise of the internet has seen an explosion in the last few years of publications requiring stock photography.

Stock photography publications can include literally any printed or photographic or internet material. North West Model Agency’s project managers have worked with a wide selection of publications all requiring stock photography models.

What is Stock Photography Modeling?

North West Model Agency considers stock photography modeling to be just as important as any other modeling discipline. It is easy to define in that it can be literally used for anything.

Stock photography modeling is used to ‘fill in’ or ‘round off’ publications and is used in many magazines where an article has been written about a given subject and they need an image to ‘fill in’ the space.

This can range from family photos to single high impact images. The scope is so huge and sometimes so specialized that it takes a professional agency such as North West Model Agency to match the model, the photographer and the assignment together.

Publications can also include adverts, websites, brochures. The list is almost limited to the imagination of the marketing department. The advantage stock photography modeling has over other forms is the lack of height, age, or weight restrictions. This makes it an ideal career for girls who do not fit the “sample” size required by fashion houses.

Remember that stock photography modeling can include just about anything. There are plenty of stock photography websites out there on the internet, have a look and you will see the sheer range of possibilities to get you going.

Technology in Stock Photography Modeling

With the onset of digital photography it is possible to get very high definition (commonly called Ultra High Quality or UHQ) stock photos almost instantly.

North West Model Agency will not charge you for a stock photography portfolio. They may refer you on to a preferred professional photographer if you wish to have stock photography added.

Stock photography modeling competition is not as intense as other modeling professions, though the gains are not usually as good. We will assign you to the most suitable role and will always make sure you are comfortable with the assignment before you undertake it. Editorial modeling is a good place to start when modeling as it allows you to ‘cut your teeth’ in an industry.

We ask all our models to fill out a North West Model Agency Feedback form when they have completed an assignment, so we constantly monitor our clients and models expectations.

Stock photography modeling is changing, make no mistake it has to if it is to survive. Stock photography modeling has languished in the prehistoric age for far too long. This can be partially attributed to the industry being formed on the old print press method of publication (calendars, magazines, tabloids). It is no secret that print is in decline and many modeling agencies are missing out on the new media and an increase in broadband access.

North West Model Agency is highly experienced in online promotion and the use of photographic material on the internet.
