New photographer first camera! Need some help though! Nikon D200?
Hi people of yahoo!
I am brand-new at photography and just received my first DSLR, a Nikon D200, used.
I have a nikorr 18~55mm lense and a 52mm polarizer. My initial question is when I take a picture, no matter what I do (besides turn on flash.. but it's at the perfect exposure without it) it's blurry! I focus, and it looks perfect through the viewfinder, but in the end it's blurry when I do playback, is it the mode I'm in? Please if anyone can help I would really appreciate it!
Also, I have a mac with iPhoto, but will it take my camera on this computer? I'm afraid if I attach it that I will potentially mess up my new camera.. Also if anyone can recommend a better, more advanced photo editing software I can download for free, add links into your answer!
You maybe getting camera shake. The shutter speed is too slow if the light is not good enough. Open up the aperture until you get an exposure of at least 1/60 sec, which is roughly what you can get away with handheld in low light, unless of course there's electronic stabilization used. Secondly using a faster ISO speed (400/800/1600 etc) will help, although you'll lose quality. Thirdly a polarizing filter will reduce light getting into the camera by a couple of stops. So if you don't need to use a polarizer, take it off. A replacement UV or Skylight filter will protect the lens elements and not reduce light passage.
The last resort would be to use a tripod to steady the camera. That way you can use slower ISO speeds and smaller apertures.
I use a Nikon D70 (which is as old as the Ark in digital camera terms) with the same lens as yours and have no problems downloading to a Mac. So with the D200 you should have no worries.
I'm not sure what free imaging software is available for the Mac. Gimp for PC is supposed to be quite good. It might be worth investing in Photoshop Elements 9. It's cut down Photoshop for a fraction of the price. It always gets top marks in reviews.
