What is a good digital camera for someone wanting to learn photography?

I've always loved taken pictures with my regular digital camera, but now I want to learn how to take somewhat professional pictures with a somewhat professional digital camera. I want something that isn't extremely expensive and that I can learn without too much difficulty. Any recommendations?

The Kodak EasyShare M853 combines an eight megapixel CCD imager and a Kodak-branded 3x optical zoom lens with a fairly standard 37 - 111mm equivalent focal range. For framing images, there's a 2.5" 154K pixel LCD display but like many current models, the M853 has no optical viewfinder. Images are stored on Secure Digital / MultiMediaCards, or in 16MB of internal memory.

The Kodak M853 has 17 scene modes to help beginners achieve the results they're looking for without the need to understand subtleties like shutter speeds, apertures and the like. Scene modes provided are: portrait, sports, landscape, children, night portrait, beach, snow, fireworks, self portrait, backlight, night landscape, text/document, manner/museum, flower, sunset, panorama, and candlelight. Additional shooting modes include auto, video, Favorites, digital IS, high ISO, and close-up.

The M853 determines exposures with a center-weighted TTL metering system, and offers 2.0EV of exposure compensation in 1/3EV increments. Five white balance settings are available including an auto mode, and ISO sensitivity is controlled automatically ranging from 80 to 800, or manually up to 1,250. The EasyShare M853 also offers a movie mode, capturing VGA (640x480) clips at 15 fps, or QVGA (320x240) clips at 30 fps, both with audio. Movies are encoded in QuickTime MPEG4 format.

Images and movies captured on the Kodak M853 are transferred to your computer over a USB 2.0 Full Speed connection. Power comes from a custom KLIC-7001 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery, and features in-camera charging via USB cable.

The Kodak EasyShare M853 ships August 2007 at a suggested list price of US$179, and is available in white, red, graphite, silver and espresso.

where can I learn about digital photography in bay area?

Well that would be dependent on your age. You have the public library, night schools, community colleges, photo groups and you have one of the most powerful of all tools right at your finger tips, the computer and the Internet. Most digital camera manufactures as well as software vendors have mini courses on photography at there sites. I have pasted a couple of them below as well as a software site that has a killer tutorial for photo line 32. You can download there software and tutorial (For Free) and it will walk you through on things like CLUT and working with the curves as well as changing the colour of the hull of a boat, I recommend it. Good luck and happy shooting.

does anyone know in digital photography - what does directing the eye to color mean?

It is in a book that is not available right now at Borders or Barnes and Nobles - the book is Digital Photography Makeover Before and After

It means your eye is attracted to or gravitates to brighter or more saturated colors.

Trying to find out more info on cameras/photography?

I really want to get into photography and take cool pictures. I have a regular digital camera now. Anyone know like what steps should be taken? Where to start off? I'd like to get a camera that I can use for learning how to learn how to focus and change the picture?

Well you are far from anywhere! But that's where we all start! :)

I suggest saving money, lots of it. Photography is not cheap.

Practice with your camera, look up Non-DSLR tutorials on google and learn what tricks you CAN do with it. Also, invest in Photoshop (or download GIMP for free) and play with your photos to achieve some DSLR effects (Bokeh, Depth of Field, Soft Focus, Fisheye, etc.)

Once you save some money.. (probably $600+ yikes!) You can start playing with the big boy toys. You might be able to get some cheaper off eBay or Craigslist.

I recommend the Nikon D60 for beginners. Off Amazon, you get the D60, some goodies (batteries, bags, sd cards) an 18-55mm AF-S VR lens, a 55-200mm AF-S Telephoto lens with a hood, for about $700.

Photography isn't cheap, and if you care to know more, email me or add me on facebook. Send an email to this account and I'll tell you how to get in touch with me

Learn Digital Photography – 3 Steps To Take Your Photography to the Pro Level

People love shooting for better photograph. The photographer feels please when his/her photos are admired by others, but there is a limit for what we do. How can you take your photography skill to the next level?

Below are the 3 easy steps that you can apply to learn digital photography and enhance your photography to the next level, simply and easily without investing for a high price courses.

1. One Step Ahead Of Others

Think before you decide to take a shot. In the old days of film camera, when the cost of films were high, people do thought before pressing the shooting button.  In modern days the film cameras are replace with digital ones, digital cost nothing when shooting people take too many pictures too quickly expecting great result but regardless of the quality. Many people fail to take it to heart. Others called it the disease of digital photography. Think before shoot is part of the fundamentals of photography. Start with an idea in mind, think about it then take the shot.

2. Composition

This is the simplest step but many people do not know about it and others don’t care. Analyses the scene including the object carefully before bringing out your camera. Consider what do you want to include in the picture? If there is object or scene that you would like to have in the picture and make sure you don’t leave them out. Watch for clutter such as garbage, cars and building that may spoil the image. Finally, try to place your camera in the position that you would like to take. Use the rule of third to create a focus point.

3. Practice makes perfect

The more you practice the more improvement you will get.

Learn digital photography by enhancing your photography skill will surely rise to the pro level. Don’t take an easy shot, learn more advanced techniques and make people admire your pictures.

Learn Digital Photography: Fast Track Your Photography

Learning digital photography in our instant society is only possible by applying the basic principles of good photography. Digital is another tool and there is no real fast way of doing this. BUT... If you are prepared to follow these six quick photography principles you're on the road to learning digital photography fast. And I really mean fast. So here goes.

    1. Choose your subject carefully.

This is the centrepiece of your photo. Make sure you identify a suitable subject and focus on this. Not negotiable. If subject is not clearly identifiable your photo will be below average.

    2. Place you subject intelligently.

Divide your image into thirds vertically and horizontally. Imagine 2 lines across and 2 lines down. Where these lines intersect place your subject on one of these points. If you have an horizon in the image, line it up with one of the 2 horizontal lines.

    3. Get closer to your subject.

Most times the subject is what you want to remember about the scene you are recording. So get as much of it in your photo. This is especially so with family photos. Have smaller groups of people shot closer to the camera.

    4. Exclude clutter from around your subject.

Make sure that there are no trees or telephone poles sticking out the top of you subject's head. Unless you particularly want to remember the garbage can, bicycle, microwave or signboard, leave them out of the scene. Look for anything that you don't want to see in 20 years when viewing the photos and exclude it.

    5. Look at your subject from a different angle.

Shoot from up higher (above the subject) or lower (looking up at the subject). Find a different angle so that the image is unique a gives you a different more interesting aspect.

    6. Change your viewpoint.

Most people stand in front of the subject and just shoot away. Move around looking through your viewfinder and find a different position that gives a more interesting shot. Experimenting is the key.

    BONUS TIP

Finally here's a bonus tip. Choose a subject you want to photograph and shoot it in 50 different ways. Shoot from high, low, the left, the right, directly above. Get in really close, turn you camera at an angle, hold the camera above your head. Change your viewpoint, walk away from the subject, lie on your back or lie on your stomach. It may sound a lot but when you try it you'll see it's possible. When you've finished, browse through all the images and you will be amazed at your ability. You will have found a new and different angle that will amaze your friends and family. Don't worry about feeling stupid if you want to get that great shot. Follow these 6 basic photographic principles and your photos will improve dramatically and very fast. Within hours you friends will be complimenting you on your great images.
