Or if I'm going out to photograph macro's, then I don't need to also carry my landscape lens. My second bag carries my camera and all three lenses. This one is useful for travelling purposes.

Or if your photographing a beautiful landscape, try different aperture settings. You'll be surprised at how many photo's you can get from shooting the same scenery with different settings.

   Always press the shutter button half way down to prefocus: before going all the way and taking the photograph. This will usually result in clearer photo's every time. It is also especially useful when you can anticipate where a subject is going to be positioned before it gets there. You can prefocus on that spot by pressing and holding the shutter button half way, then as it comes into view, press the rest of the way down.

Composition may seem a basic rule, but is an extremely powerful element if you want your image to jump out and grab the viewer's attention. At the end of the day, you are attempting to arrange a series of lines, squares, circles and triangles in such a way that the final result is pleasing to the eye. Below I have put together a few digital photography tricks that will ensure your pictures create maximum interest.

Ancient it may be, but the rule of thirds is still as relevant today as it has ever been. In this rule, the viewfinder is divided into thirds horizontally and vertically, so you end up with nine sections. The objective is to place your subject at the intersection of any two of these lines. Many new photographers begin by following the rule subconsciously, unaware that it exists. The lines need only be approximate, the idea being that the picture moves away from total symmetry, which can be somewhat uninteresting. Try experimenting by taking the same shot with and without using the rule - you will soon see the difference!

Recurring shapes and themes can make for a very satisfying result. For example, waves moving across the picture from one corner to the other, or a series of hills in a landscape can easily make a picture by themselves. Couple a landscape with reflections in water, and you can really have something special. Still water can make a perfect reflection, but another digital photography trick to consider is using a reflection in moving water, because of the abstract nature of the shapes produced.

Compositional depth can be created by framing the subject with background or foreground detail. Frames can be found everywhere - archways, overhanging trees, someone peering out of a window, or even the gap between two buildings. A natural frame should succeed in drawing the viewer's eye to the main subject. From portraits to still life, from architecture to nature and wildlife, you will find that frames work well for all types of photographs. The idea is to develop a keen eye for spotting a suitable natural frame, as, in many cases, adding this element will have a real impact on your finished image.

Finally, one of the finest digital photography tricks to learn is that the strongest compositions are also the most simple. The saying "more is less" holds true. When looking at the various elements that will make up your shot, ensure you retain only those that you really need. Even a cluttered background can be effectively removed by using a wide aperture to take it out of focus. It then becomes a subtle blend of colours used to complement the main picture.

Digital Photography Background Tips

When we're taking photographs, we're usually too busy concentrating on the main focus of the picture and don't worry about what's in the background.  However, the background is crucial to the overall success of the photo so here are some digital photography background tips.

One of my favourite digital photography background tips is glaringly obvious when you think about it.  If you're taking a picture in your garden, don't include the line full of washing in the background, or the rubbish bin.  Out in the street avoid bins, dangling electrical wires cement mixers or anything that will detract from the scene and in the countryside don't include electricity pylons, telegraph poles or similar; the landscape will look much nicer without them.

Don't include anything in the background which draws the eye away from the main subject of your picture.  Apart from avoiding clutter as above, there are a number of ways to ensure that your subject really is the centre of attention.

Shorten the depth of field so that your subject is in sharp focus against an out of focus background by widening your aperture.  If your camera has a macro setting, this will happen automatically for such subjects as flower blooms and insects but not for larger subjects like pets or humans.

Don't let the background compete with your subject.  For example a child in a floral dress standing in a field of poppies will get lost.  Equally, vertical or horizontal lines such as trees or furrows can detract from the main feature.

Clashing colours don't make for a good photograph either.  A woman in a pink dress photographed in front of a terracotta coloured house won't create a good look.

Take photos from above or below your subject, so that the sky or the grass makes a natural background.

Another one of the best digital photography background tips is create your own.  Use a sheet or other plain piece of material in a colour of your choice to hang behind the subject or lay under the subject.  Artists' card can be placed on a worktop to create the background for small objects.

Don't forget to use the right camera settings if you're taking a portrait against a window as your subject person could end up as no more than a silhouette against a bright background.  As a general rule a bright background will take the eye away from the subject anyway.

Of course you can always modify or touch up your photos afterwards by using a tools such as Adobe Photoshop to alter backgrounds.
