How do I start Underwater Photography?

I just recently found amazing underwater photography galleries and it really made me want to give it a try.
I already have a Nikon D5000 SLR camera, but i have no idea where to start looking for the right housing?
Any tips or advice please?

Are you a scuba diver? How deep are you planning to go?

Ikelite make a housing for the D5000;

Good for recreational diving depths - not cheap at £1200. DSLR underwater photography is the most expensive! As well as the housing, you need different ports, depending on what lenses you use and you need external flash too.

My Nikon D100 set up (Sea & Sea housing, flat port, dome port, dual Sea & Sea strobes) cost around £4000-5000 (not including the camera/lenses).

You might want to invest in a compact to start with before you start splashing out serious money;

Underwater photography has its own set of challenges, usually involving water clarity/loss of light. Martin Edge's book is an excellent introduction to the subject - well worth a read;

Maintenance of the housing & O rings is absolutely crucial! The seals should be free of dust, grit, sand, hair & be greased with O ring grease. Housings need to be washed thoroughly in fresh water after being used before they're opened to get rid of salt deposits.
