photography 4 dummies?

Hello to the masses
I just Graduated high school and i have a passion for art/photography. i love taking black and white photos. I would like help with the purchase of my first Student/Semi-Pro Camera. A lot of people have said that i should buy a Nikon d-40 or any kind of Digital SLR. ANY help would be highly appreciated
The picture that inspired me to become a photographer was the "Afghan Girl" it is so beautiful, and maybe one day i can take a picture like that.

I bought a Sony A-700 a year and a half ago and it has been excellent. At first people think Sony? for DSLR? but they actually partnered or took over Minolta. A very good camera maker.

I could go through all of the bells and whistles, but really depending on the range, they all have pretty much the same. I love the feel and placement of buttons on the A-700 compared to other cameras. It does very well in reviews as well.

You will get a lot of people tell you that Nikon and more so Canon are always the best. And yes they do a great job, but most people say that because others say that. I use the A-700 for personal and My work has a Canon 20D and 40D that I use almost as much as my own. There is no comparison personally. The Canon takes the same high quality pics, but it is definitely more klunky. Most people can only tell you that they like their own camera, but I have used both and I like Sony better.
