Digital Photography Courses London

London is a preferred place to learn photography. Londoners have an eye for good photographs and appreciate visual superiority. To make it a double whammy, some of the best studios where aspiring photographers can learn the art are located in London. So that invariably doubles the expectations of people living in this part of the world. They want to see good photographs and for that, good photographers have to come to the Mecca of photography where they master the art.

Digital photography courses are taught well and in huge numbers in London. Also, there are many types that these studios encourage students to specialize in. Marriage photography, portrait photography, wildlife photography, aerial photography, underwater photography etc. are some of the various specializations which students major in. For every digital photography course, the students train hard. In fact, they train with the best of equipment. These photography courses in London are designed by professionals, experts, veterans of photography and aficionados credited highly as experts in the art. They are designed keeping modern photography practices in the loop and are made to suit and enhance the repertoire of the photographer.

The photography courses in London do not come cheap. They are a tad too expensive. But the investment is worth. The photographer training in a good studio with requisite infrastructure is one of the most qualified and well billed photographers in town and is expected to do well. Assignments from the domain he specializes in start pouring in within no time with the initial curiosity arising to see the potential in him. Every digital photography course graduate has to be given some credit for training well and making a robust portfolio finding takers.

Some of the finest trainers come to train in various divisions in these studios located in London. They are experts in their fields and take up part time teaching assignments to come and share their experiences with aspiring and budding photographers. They do it so that the tradition of photography is upheld and the quality in it retained. In fact, it is only taken ahead to the next step. The trainers also accompany photographers to sites where the apprentices get to learn and imbibe from the masters. The effort is worth it because no training can substitute or compensate for onsite training where the real action happens.

The <a href="http://www.photographymadesimple.co.uk/">digital photography courses</a> in London demonstrate why the place is listed as the best venue in the world to learn photography. Training in London based institutes promises photography aspirants of rollicking careers. They get to learn how to work on portfolios, the raw craftiness gets a solid polishing and most importantly, they train under the best and hence are appreciated and thought about highly wherever they go for employment. This ensures them of a smooth start. Work comes tidily and struggle is minimal. After that, the distance they cover in their careers all depends on their skill, their ability to innovate and the raw smarts they have. But one thing never deserts them all their life, the pedigree of having learnt photography under the best.

Professional Music Photography: It's never too late to start

If Mick Jagger and Keith Richards aren't living proof that you're never too old to rock and roll, perhaps we should turn to the example led by legendary star snapper Joe Bangay.

Although he'd cut his teeth as a young photographer for The Daily Express on Fleet Street, it wasn't until he'd reached the grand old age of 50, that Joe was given his first music assignment.

Finding himself staring through his telephoto lens at Status Quo in the front row of London's renowned Hammersmith Odeon, he was thrown into the visually and sonically stimulating world of live rock music. He knew instantly that he'd found his niche.

From that moment on, he began applying his newsman's instinct to the task of tracking down rising stars and capturing the last relaxed and unguarded moments of artists poised on the brink of public ownership. As Joe's own fame within the industry grew, he glitterati's inner circle – entrusted with the task of documenting the dynamism and flamboyance of the 70s and 80s with his intimate portraits and breathtaking live shots of icons like Madonna, Freddie Mercury, Kate Bush and Bono. He even scored an invitation to photograph Margaret Thatcher making tea in her kitchen.

Over the course of his career, Joe Bangay has amassed an extraordinary collection of iconic portraits and live action performance shots of some of the greatest faces in music, film, television, theatre, sport, ballet and politics.

Now in his 80s, he is undoubtedly the world's oldest working rock and roll photographer and a true inspiration for those of us who thought we were too long in the tooth to follow our dream.

How do I change careers - to get into online Graphic Design from Marketing?

I'm 25 - I've did art and photography up until age 18. I'd now like to move into Graphic Design (mainly online - but like to know some print skills too.)

I'm thinking of taking a year out to do a course in London - can anyone give me any tips or recommend a course? I thought that this one looked pretty good:
http://www.lcc.arts.ac.uk/courses/graphic_design/diploma_digital_design.htm

I'm open to all suggestions - really appreciate your help with this!

hi darling, here are the things you need to take into consideration:
1. design is physically consuming, it will hurt your neck and shoulder terribly in a long run, and you may risk of long term disability
2. designer are not paid very well, you will need to expect £18k - £20k as a BA graphic design graduate, and after 4 years in the industry, if you are lucky, you'll get paid around £35k.
3. after become a senior designer, lots of people wants to move away from design to product manager, project manager, design manager for the above 2 reasons, so you may want to reconsider this change
4. think carefully whether you want to do a creative job, or you want to do a visually creative job, sometimes maybe you want to be a copywriter - they are extremely creative people and contribute an awful lot to creative ideas, but you may think the only creative job is art director.
5. also think about who do you want to work for, what kind of work would interest you, and find out what is the salary like for this kind of job and then see if you still wants to do it
6. the course you picked sounds really good, and it fits in with your situation perfectly, but i wouldn't quite your current job, ask them that you want to work 3 days a week, or take a sabbatical year. don't give up your current job for this course.

Relatively cheap photography courses, for my canon EOS 450D?

are there any courses like day courses that aren't around £200!!!! to learn the basics and some professional skills? preferably in the london, reading area, UK. just to understand the components, and how to capture great images. Thanks.

Why do you expect everything to be "really cheap"?

The instructors didn't go to college and get years of experience to teach people for free. They need to make a living, too.

There are also generally costs for the class -- location, any materials, etc.

You're not going to learn professional skills from a cheap course. And great images take time -- it's not so much a skill you can learn as a skill you can develop.

Digital Photography. Do We Really Need All These Mega Pixels?

What a day yeasterday was! I awoke feeling like some vicious dwarf had spent the complete evening sanding my throat with sandpaper while brutally swapping my grey matter with lime green jelly... yup I had man flu.  The morning didn't get that much better as I then spent what felt like an age driving around Northampton General Hospital hopelessly striving to park so that my son could show up at his hearing test appointment on time.  With these and many more inane irritants behind me I was at least looking forward to one aspect of my day, visiting my local colleges photography course open day, more explicitly I'd been promised a hands on demo by Hasselblad's area sales team of their brand new drool inducing digital camera range, the H4D series.

Well I'll overtly confess what a lovely piece of machinery this camera is, as with all previous Hasselbads (I've been lucky enough to own several) the build quality and ergonomics are just amazing, a bench mark for all other manufacturers to follow etc etc etc... but this isn't a review article.  What has been bugging me and by all accounts many other photographers, judging by the ones I met the other night, is this unmistakable mega pixel mania.  This stupid and down right deceptive obsession with the pixel count as a gauge of the quality of a camera and thus the photographer.

This isn't as an assault on any one particular camera company, at least Hasselblad aim their cameras at high end professionals whom might at least sometimes exploit all those 60 megapixels on a billboard poster or something as equally considerable, all camera brands are at it!  When did you last shoot a 48 or 96 sheet poster?  When did you last do a print greater than say A4?  In fact when did you last do a print at all?

I've been lucky enough to shoot for customers that have required billboard posters and exhibited in galleries with big prints all whilst shooting under the critical gaze of top London art directors.  Since taking a step back from the advertising world but still continuing to photograph in a professional setting where pressures are high I have hardly shot anything that the client desired to be printed larger than A4.   As a matter of fact after reviewing last years projects I can conclude that at least 75% of this commercial work will ever go near a printing press, instead they will remain firmly in the virtual world such as a clients internet website or email marketing campaign!

I have shot on all camera formats from 35mm SLRs through to large format view cameras but now choose to chiefly shoot on a 12 mega pixel camera system except the client specifically demands larger files, and I have never once had a client moan about image quality.  Sure I have to expolit many of my skills and photographic understanding in capturing files that are of a certain quality but the point I'm aiming to make is that these shots would have been no better if photographed on say a 22 mega pixel back, just bigger!

I often flick through my camera periodicals and indeed fantasize over owning the newest and greatest camera gadget, but I endeavor to resist the temptation to upgrade purely on the idea of acquiring superior picture quality.  Picture quality is not governed by pixel count or more specifically file size, that is the truth.  There are countless considerations that govern the quality of an image from the quality of the idea, the command and quality of light, exposure, post productio and of course all this depends on the expertise of the person behind the lense.  Consider the photographs that have most inspired you or made you go wow and I can assure you that many of those images were not captured on cameras of any better physical quality than even a modest modern day digital camera.

Modern day digital cameras are truly unbelievable devices and the great news is that you don't have to remortgage your house to buy one.  That makes them a great equalizer, photography is not just for the reserve of the rich and famous or the bearded camera bore (no offence to any bearded readers out there, I salute your hairyness!).  So get on ebay, pick up a 18 month old DSLR bargain that some kind sole traded in for a supposedly bigger and better model, read a couple of suitable books and then get on out there and start shooting like there's no tomorrow, hey there's no film to have to buy or process!

Are there any Photography schools that specialises in film photography?

Is there a school in London (North) that you can take a course for film photography (35mm, Not Digital) Does the school teach you how to develop and process film using dark room techniques?

Thanks.

This may not answer your question (as you need to look at each school's website for details). Most traditional photography courses start with a film camera--so you'll be spending time in the lab, too.

Microstock Photography – The New Approach To Ensure Success

For the past four or five years that I’ve been submitting to the Microstock Photography market I had always said it was a numbers game. Therefore the more images that you uploaded to the libraries or agencies the more downloads you would get resulting in higher earnings.

But I feel that over the past year that has changed. You now, more than ever need to target a niche. And then dominate that niche. You see the wherever you look on the internet the picture quality has increased. This is just the same for the libraries. The overall quality has shot up and therefore we need to submit a higher quality image.

Fortunately, in recent months, the demand for the pictures has exploded. With the present economic climate even the large companies are using microstock photography rather than employing the services of a professional photographer.

I am pretty sure that if you look at your online portfolio, as I did, you will realise that your images follow the 80-20 rule. That is that the top selling 20% of your online images rake in 80% of the money. I have now changed my approach to microstock photography. Instead of going out and shooting anything and I am now being very selective what I shoot for the microstock market. I am looking to increase the number of top selling images rather than just the number of images online.

Let’s assume we are going to concentrate on still-life and we are looking for a new subject. First I would look at what is topical either in the news or browsing on the internet. I’ve found that here in the UK the adverse weather is creating a quite a concern and that heating bills are shooting through the roof. So we could look at finances, bills, weather, heating, insulation etc. For arguments sake, I’ll go for heating bills how I can illustrate the subject with images.

I then search the subject for images that will give a spark of inspiration. Note I said inspiration and not to copy. If an image catches my eye I will study it and work out the variations and how I could make improve it or interpret the message in more suitable way. I do this until I have about twenty ideas that are all related to the subject.

I then make a shooting list and a list of props that I need to shoot all twenty ideas. After I have got the props I will then, and only then take my camera into my studio (converted garage) and begin shooting.

The great advantage of this methodical process is when it comes to uploading your images. You only need one set of categories and keywords. In addition you have a set of pictures that depict a topic that is in the news and already being searched. Also you will find that working in this way you will emerge from the photo session with far more pictures than you intended. Once you start your creative juices flowing, the ideas leap out at you rather than wondering what to shoot.

Another plus to this approach is that the photo buyer usually buys more than one image to illustrate the article of blog etc. If you are supplying over twenty images that hit the spot they are more likely to choose more than one image.

Of course you income is still related to the number of downloads. You can also put other images on as before but I can almost guarantee, if you take the time to research the subject, the niche subjects will be in the top 20% earning 80% of your income. You should, therefore, earn more money for less work. If you’re serious about microstock photography - Then maybe my new approach may work for you?

About the Author

I have been interested in photography for most of my life. About 25 years ago I entered the world of wedding photography. More recently I discovered the wonderful world of Microstock Photography. A world that allowed me to earn money from my photography, yet with a freedom, not only of time but freedom to express myself creatively.

Why not take a look at my latest images that are currently selling through Microstock at http://www.gbphotostock.com/stock or view more articles at http://www.microstockconfidential.com

A good photography course in London (or nearby)?

Anyone know any good schools of digital photography in London or nearby?
I thought something that last one month, more or less, whitout spending a fortune

thanks in advance

:)

I've literally hunted high and low or a course like this!
I know it's not what your after, but I have enrolled for a Digital Media course because parts of it are heavily based on digital photography, however it is a 2 year course.
The only others i have been able to find have all been analogue.
I know central saint martins to introductory courses that are about a week long so it might be worth checking their website and similar big art colleges. However, i know a friend that did a 2 week textile course and it cost about £1000!
Good Luck

Digital Imaging: the Death of Film?

If the pattern of adoption for digital imaging currently happening in the USA is repeated in the UK, then it could sound the death knell for traditional film. Between May 2006 and May 2007 the volume of digital photos prints produced in the USA grew by a staggering 34%, with online photo services seeing an 80% rise in popularity, according to the Photo Marketing Association International.

Technical innovation has been credited with the shift from film to digital, in particular the growth of high speed Web access, which makes uploading images so much faster. With well over half of all web users in the UK now on broadband uploading here is just as fast and simple as in the US and usage is expected to rise in line with the American uptake.

However, digital imaging prints are just half the story, with sales of traditional film cameras completing the picture. Over the same period as the rise in digital imaging print production, sales in traditional film cameras have fallen 49%, while digital camera sales rose 5% over the same period, with nearly nine out of ten digital cameras offering resolutions in excess of 6million megapixels. Affordable 10 million megapixel cameras are now retailing at less than half of the price that they were two years ago; combined with the fact that shutter speeds and specifications have improved, this has made digital cameras a real alternative to film. Plus the cost savings of using digital imagery cannot be underestimated. Rather than waste several rolls of expensive film to get that one elusive shot, with digital cameras any picture not up to scratch can simply be deleted after being reviewed on screen.

Another attraction of the switch from film to digital is that the storage of digital images is becoming much easier. Many new computers are equipped with much bigger storage capacity on their hard drives, or if not big enough then storage devices such as USB pens or USB hard drives can be plugged in, allowing for the increased storage of treasured images. In addition many websites offer online vaults meaning that pictures that would have taken up valuable hard drive space can now be stored online and accessed through the web.

Of course, there is always the old-fashioned way; home photo development is extremely easy now with home-printing equipment available with most cameras, while there are also many instant print booths in photo shops, supermarkets and chemists.

With the ease of use, uploading and storage of images and tumbling prices of high quality digital cameras it is easy to see why digital photography is taking America by storm. It is only a matter of time before it happens here in the UK.

Wedding Photography

The day of your wedding is undoubtedly the most unforgettable and cherished day of your life. The day is made even more special with the presence of all your near and dear ones. Closest family and friends are there by your side to support and share the most significant moment of your life. As years go by, memories start to grow fainter and such an occasion is recollected through pictures of the esteemed day. However, if the photos are not good enough, the essence of the moment is ruined completely. Therefore, during the course of planning your wedding, it is very important to consider various options of wedding photography. You must look around for the best wedding photographer who can capture the exclusive day and come out with wonderful pictures to make for promising memories. Before choosing a person to act upon the successful task of wedding photography, there are few factors that need consideration:

  • The Style of Pictures

How do you want your photos to be? Most wedding photographers enhance the look of the pictures by adopting a specific style for example, traditional poses, candid camera work or photojournalism. You can either choose from one of these styles or get a combination of all. Also, you are given the option of getting the pictures in grayscale, sepia or natural colors.

  • Choosing the Photographer

The person taking your wedding pictures will be around you all through out the day and therefore it is very necessary to know the person before signing him up for the charge. Take time to speak to the photographer and get to know him well. He must be friendly yet professional, patient yet punctual, reliable and should make you feel at ease.

  • View Samples before Hiring

This is the most important aspect of appointing someone for wedding photography. You must request to view samples of the photographer’s previous work. Make sure you ask about the number of people assisting him and about the whole process as to how they go about it.

  • Time of Coverage

The session of photography depends on the events covered. In case you decide to get pictures of the ceremony only, the time of coverage would last from 1-3 hours. Many people also decide to get exclusive pictures of rehearsal dinner, bride and groom, engagement, reception, décor and cake etc. You can really get pictures clicked of the entire ceremony to make for an awesome reminiscence.

  • Delivery of Photos

This is the post photography session when you need to ask about how the photos will get delivered, if you can request for albums, if they will offer the negatives or digital files etc.

  • Price of Photos

The price of the photos is a significant aspect that needs a lot of thought. Don’t make a hasty choice by choosing a cheap photographer. You must not compromise on quality for a few extra pounds. The pictures will remain with you forever and thus you must shell out some extra money and go for the best kind of wedding photography.

With a limitless gene pool of talent we set out to change the way weddings are shot and put together, thus we have! By using shooting methods from magazines, white balance laws from fashion photography and light rules from school of emotive photograpghy, we capture weddings in an all new style: and by using the dynamics of graphic design, the colours laws of art direction and unilateral theories of fashion layouts, we put together what we shoot in an all new style...collectively. We don't ask you to pose for pictures, we don't ask you to repeat actions and we don't ask you to freeze at crucial moments. We simply shoot what's happening when it's happening leaving you with the perfect album.
