new student on digital photography course needs cheapest all round digital slr camera.?
I'm buying for my daughter who's not a total beginner but there are so many cameras out there it's difficult to know which one to get . I can't afford to make a mistake when buying. The college isn't allowed to recommend specific cameras.
maximum budget of £400.
The most important thing when buying a DSLR is to remember that you are not buying a camera but a lens system.
Camera bodies will be updated very frequently but the lenses are usually fairly expensive purchases that can be moved on to the next camera body when it is purchased, as long as it is by the same manufacturer. In other words, if you get a large collection of Nikon lenses then you are probably going to be buying Nikons for a while.
Lets face it, Nikon and Canon pretty much dominate the DSLR market. They both make incredible products and each has a HUGE selection of lenses to choose from. Both those that are made in-house and plenty of aftermarket ones as well, i.e. Sigma, Tamron, etc.
There are, however, other options. My favorite is Pentax. They make very good DSLR's and also have a huge lens selection. Almost any Pentax lens ever made will work on their brand new cameras and any auto focus lens made since 1988 will work without any loss of function, such as metering and so on.
Also, Pentax cameras are usually a little cheaper then Canon and Nikons, offering a better value for the money with no loss of quality. The main area that Pentax is a little behind the competition is in shooting speed. Your higher dollar Canons and Nikons will move up to 6 frames per second or more. The best Pentax has is 3fps. This is only a big deal if you shoot a lot of Sports photography. Will your daughter be doing that? Keep in mind, if you are looking at a budget DSLR you will probably only get a 3fps speed anyway, as the higher ones are reserved for costlier cameras.
Here are some suggestions-
Pentax K10d (pick these up cheap now due to the K20d coming out)
Pentax K100d
Canon Rebel XTi or XSi
Nikon D40x, D60 or D80
Most of the prices for the range between 450 to 800.
Good luck, I hope this helps.
