Commerical photography?
I am going to start commercial photography with small businesses. Do a few free ones to build my portfolio. Then charge $200 for a four hour session and $20 for each additional hour. The customer will receive digital negatives and 100% rights. I am very friendly and open minded to suggestions.
So I would really appreciate if you would help me build on this idea. Should I do a different approach or add on to what I have planned. Or just go with what I have. You as a small business owner, what do you think. You as a photographer, what tips do you have? Thank you very much! : )
1. do you have any experience of commercial photography at all. i.e. as an assistant or the like?
2. what sort of "commercial" photography
3. DON'T do any free sessions EVER. If you want shots for your portfolio then either work as a second shooter or hire in models if you are planning on shooting people. If you are planning on shooting packshots/equipment etc then hire it and get your book together.
4. NEVER EVER EVER give 100% rights. Commerciall photography works on licensing the images.
If you do not know about usage licensing and rights then you are nowhere ready for commercial work.
5. your rates are way too low. Your day rate should be 600-800 minimum and half day should be 60% of that. You can offer a basic one of usage license for print/web in that but charge for any other usage.
6. you really need to study this further. Currently your business plan is non existent.
