Digital Photography Infrared

I have heard of dSLRs being converted to Infrared photography. Can a digital P&S be converted to Infrared?

Many people are mentioning the cost of the conversion. I am handy, would it be possible to make the conversion myself?

For the price, I'm not sure I'd want to do that to just a point and shoot.
