Can You Tell Me Your Photographers Work Flow?
I'm a amateur photographer trying to take my photography skills to the professional level. What I'm trying to do is get my digital processing work flow together. I recently had one of my friends build me a nice fast computer. Now I need to know what software to get and which card reader to get for my CF cards. I was looking at the SanDisk Extreme III that a friend told me was fast. I also wanted to know what is the best Operating System to use for digital photography.
First I will cover the other issues you raise.
* Operation system. It does not matter. Use the one you know the best. Changing OS's will slow down your productivity while you learn it. Better to spend that time learning how to be a professional photographer.
* Unless your camera supports UDMA (Canon's do not) cards, buying a highspeed card can be a waste of money.
* In practical shooting situations, unless you plan on using a "machine-gun" method, even a slow 4x card can keep up with your shooting, like less than one shot every two or three seconds.
Now to the work-flow.
* Set your camera to its highest resolution.
* Shoot the whole assignment
* Copy all the images from the memory card(s) to the computer.
* Format the memory card
* Append the image files with your copyright notice, contact information, client or subject information and key words using Adobe's Bridge.
* Edit the shoot. This means sort the best from the rest, not doing any photo manipulation.
* Make backup DVD's of all the images and store them in a safe place.
* Process any RAW files for the client and prepare a CD for them.
That's it.
