Can someone give me some tips on how to take really good pictures with a regular camera?

I'm kinda new to the whole photography world.

I've recently taken it up as a hobby and I'm in the process of taking an online class to learn more.

Right now, I only have a regular Kodak digital camera. I can't really afford a $1000 camera with $500 lenses right now. I will be able to afford it in a couple months, but right now all I have is my little Kodak Easy Share Z1285. It's a nice camera with12mp. Could someone offer me some tips on how I can take good pictures with it.

One of the great things about digital cameras is that you can take thousands of shots with no more cost than taking a dozen. It means that even "trial and error" will result in SOME good photos, even if you rely on luck, alone.

But you can improve your odds by taking some simple steps. Most important is for you to read and understand your camer's operator's manual. You camera probably has a LOT more capability than you know about. With simpler cameras, the photographer has to know the camera's limitations to assure that the shots taken will work. But even the simplest digitals can do a lot more than some sophisticated film cameras from the past.

Read the manual, from cover to cover and then take the time to TRY the various controls of you unit. What does "ISO" do? Then set up a shot were you try various ISO settings. Take some notes about what you tried. What is "White Balance?" Play with that. Take notes.

Go through all the features in a similar fashion. Upload the photos into your computer so that you can look at your results on your monitor. You really can't see all that much on your camera's small LCD screen. As you review the pictures, refer to your notes and the manual so that you can get an idea what works better and what does not work in any specific situation or camera setting.

The process, ALONE, will result in better photos, later, and in being able to capture even MORE shots than you thought possible.

Then pick up a copy of a basic photography book that covers subjects like "compositon," "framing," "color," and other discussions on the esthetic qualities of good photography.

Meanwhile, practice, make notes, and practice some more. Like any skill, improvement will come with experience. But, by having the technical knowledge as you shoot means that more of your "practice" shots will result in "keepers," worthy of printing and framing.

i'm not looking to buy a real expensive software, just something like at wal mart or circuit city. which one is best for enhancing the clarity of a muggy or cloudy picture?

Paint.Net or GIMP are free. Otherwise, Photoshop is the best but is expensive.

What are some good, free "alternatives" to Photoshop?

I just want to edit photos for fun; not for a profession or anything. Photo shop would not be practical for that purpose, I think. My school has Photo shop and a program called GIMP, which is a free photo-editing software. Is GIMP good for editing photos? Are there better ones out there?
I just installed GIMP. I have a Windows.

GIMP is used for Photo editing on Linux. That is the O.S. that I have. But if you have windows you can always get Photoshop Elements. Maybe download a trial version, and definitely buy a student version of Photoshop 7, 8, or if you have Vista you need Photoshop CS 3 or CS4 depending if you have 32-bit or 64-bit. I have no idea if GIMP can be installed on a M.S. Windows O.S.

Online Digital Photography Class?

Has anyone taken online digital photography classes through Midlands Tech and was it helpful? Did you feel that the teacher was helpful? Would you recommend it?
