How can I take a black and white photo and make 1 part colored?

I have a photo and I want to take it and make 1 part of it in color, such as a hoodie or pants. I am using iPhoto on a Mac computer. PLEASE HELP! 10 POINTS BEST ANSWER.

It is called Selective (or partial) desaturation.

1. Duplicate your background layer.
2. Desaturate that layer (i.e. make it b&w).
3. Apply a layer mask to the layer. Use the black brush to paint on the layer mask (make sure that is where you are, not on the image itself). That will bring the color back to those areas. If you make a mistake, change the brush to white and go over it.
4. When you're happy, flatten and save.

If you don't have any image editors, you can do it for free on www.picnik.com in their effects section.

Here is how to do it on picnik.com:

Upload a photo
Click on the "Create" tab
Click on "Black and white"
In the "Effect Painting" box, choose "Original"
Choose a brush size, then simply paint the color back in where you want it.
If you make a mistake, change it to "Effect" and go over the mistake.
Save the picture.

Why Ken Rockwell? Why not Digital Photography School.com?

Is one better than the other? I personally love the school online because it is easier to follow. His site seems thrown together.

The answer is right in your question. Because it is Ken Rockwell and NOT Digital Photography School.com.

His site seems thrown together because it IS thrown together. He did not set out to build a "school". He began with basically a simple site to share some knowledge / opinions / tests. As time went on, the site has grown and has had many additions. Sort of like building on to an existing house. It is never going to be as much of a cohesive whole as the same size house that is planned and built from the start.

If he wanted to start all over again with an entirely new site and layout design, it would more than likely be much improved and easier to navigate / use.
