How To Take Great Photographs

HELP! How to photograph a family of four...?

I am scheduled to take photos of a family of four and was wondering what is the best way to photograph them. Naturally I want all four of them in focus. I understand when you photograph two people you focus between the two in order to have them both in focus but a group of four?
Normally I take great shots of 1-2 people but never have had a family of four.
Any help is appreciated....

Btw, I have a Nikon D200 which I just purchased and don't really want to try "experimenting" during this important session.
I read where there are different "focus areas" but they specify to use them when the individuals are moving...or some of them, etc.

Don't get into all of the different focus modes and all that. Just leave it at the default setting of single area autofocus. If none of your subjects is dead center in the frame, you can select one of the focus zones that is not dead center (see page 53 in your manual abot unlocking the selector) or focus using the center spot with a half-press of the shutter, recompose and complete the shot.

Better yet...

Trust your eyes and use manual focus. It's not really that hard.

If you DON'T trust your eyes and can't get the autofocus to cooperate, "bracket" your focus. Take one that you think is dead on. Take a few more VERY slightly off from that position - plus and minus - and judge the results on your monitor.

If you can get to f/8.0, you have NO worries about some being in focus and others out of focus.

Here you go. I use a D200 also. This was a very hazy, rainy day and I only used f/3.5 at 1/60 - ON A TRIPOD. I think it's acceptably sharp for a group photo. I didn't do any "work" on this, since it is just a casual shot. It could have been improved, I'm sure.

Here's another one that's only f/4.0 and it's acceptably sharp.

f/4.5: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=934272490&size=l
f/2.8 and it's acceptably sharp for what it is: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=933621989&size=l
