What do i need to begin photography?

I dont want something that makes like publishable photos, just something to take good quality pictures. I have a digital camera right now, and it sucks! It only has digital zoom, and just seems to always have pictures out of focus. I want a good, solid camera, and my main focus is on really just taking pictures of my son, flowers, the beach, etc. I will spend up to like 500 dollars. What do i need to know, and what type of camera is best? Whats the best place to get them printed? Thanks!

for a beginner i would go with the canon s3 is or the canon s5 is. they both have image stabilization and are both under $400. they are 6-8 megapixel i think. canon is known for great quality cameras. dont dissappoint yourself from the beginning by getting a cheap digital.
after your familiar with the camera..look up mpix.com or whcc.com..great quality and customer service. much better than local labs like costco or walmart.
