Photography: What should I do with my opaque negatives?

I am doing a Photography project for (you guessed it) Photography class. I had to take pictures of the ever-so-scenic downtown Toronto. However, after some messy timing problems during developing, my negatives came out opaque; the outsides are very dark but the inside is much whiter. Essentially, you can clearly see how the image looks via the negatives (on one side). SEE HERE -- http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/7268/scan0004xv1.jpg I tried shining a light through them but came up short -- not enough light can go through. Now, I've scanned them in and *could* do some digital altering but I'd rather stick to the good ol' tradition method. So I'm what I am asking is, is there anything I can do without giving in to digital?

Scanning them and working on the images in the digital domain will certainly give you the most control and the greatest possibility of success. That being said, the advice above is good. Mostly, it will take experimentation with the amount of contrast and exposure during the enlargement process. Just be ready to spend some time and some money to make it happen!
