Looking for a new, digital camera? Advise?

Hi everyone, for my birthday I have asked my parents for a new camera but don't know which one. I'm looking for a professional digital camera which is good for beginners (I want to start photography for a hobby). I have been looking at websites such as nikon and canon but I don't know where to start.

I will also be going to a camera store soon but I wouldn't mind some suggestions or hints :)

1 I would like a price under $600 AUS
2 Size doesn't matter
3 I would like to learn to use shutter speeds/apertures
4 Don't particularly mind
