My daughter is starting a photography course and has asked for a digital slr camera for christmas.?
Does anyone know of a decent make or model that I could get for her. Your advice would be much appreciated as I know nothing about photography.
Canon and Nikon are both excellent manufacturers. Go for an SLR (Single Lens Reflex) with interchangeable lenses if she is serious about photography.
I have a Nikon D50 but there are newer models. The D50 is now out of date but the D40 and D80 are still available. However, I would consider the Canon EOS 350D as its an excellent camera although a little heavier than the D50.
Its a very personal choice and a bit about feel so consider taking her to a big dealer like Jessops on her birthday and letting her choose. Your stuck with the thing for a while so its important its comfortable to use.
I also use a Nikon S1 which I can carry in a shirt pocket whenever I am out and take photos quickly in a crowd or when something interesting happens.
Important things to think about are - how long does it take between switching on and taking first photo. Any action you see can be over waiting for the thing to boot up, and how long between photos too. With the S1 you can take a series of images with one click and then edit them but quality is lower.
Also get a bigger memory card. 1Gb is probably overkill but what they come with you can fill in a weeks holiday.
Good luck and hope she has fun with the thing.
