Do you have to be a digital photojournalist?
Hi, im only a teenager but i really have my sights set on becoming a photo-journalist.Even though im young, I really dont like digital cameras and have instead taken to film photography. I've used advanced slr digital cameras, but to me they're not the same. Film has a certain, idk, soul to it. I mean annie liebovitz work is now all digital and it's awful! She used to be amazing. Anyway my question was, as a photojournalist working for a magazine or newspaper, do you now have to use digital cameras. I know that places like Time and the New York Times have basically gotten rid of their darkrooms and stuff, but while working for them are you forced to go digital. Or is that decision still left up to the photographer. I mean if i can get them a fantastic image, does it matter if i still use film?
The days of snappers having a mini darkroom in the back of their car or using the hotel bathroom to develop their film and then transmit it back to the office at 300baud are long gone.
The vast majority of papers and agencies now require virtually instant transmission of newsworthy images. Therefore you have to use digital.
If you are freelance working on news stories that would apply or you will lose out.
If you are working on articles or stories for monthly mags etc then you can get away with film but the majority of publications want digital files for their stuff.
So..... go digital if you are to be a photojournalist or you will lose out on work.
