3 Cool Photography Tricks Without Photoshop

You might be amazed by what you can do with a Digital SLR(DSLR) camera to create amazing photos. Photographs of wonderful lights in the night, ethereal falls, waves and clouds are all possible with long exposure techniques. Some other tricks you could do without requiring Photoshop (or any other photo editing and enhancing program) include taking a photo of multiple bolts of lightning within the same picture, "disappearing" moving people from your photograph, taking wonderful infrared landscape scenes and many more. Several techniques call for a specific filter and some require just the correct settings in your digital slr and a tripod. View the video clip in the link at the bottom of this article to see examples of shots using these techniques and more.

Let me talk briefly about some top things you can do using your digital slr camera to create stunning and impressive pictures with no need of Photoshop.

Long Exposure Night Photography Methods

The majority of digital slr cameras include exposure settings that will allow you to raise the exposure time and those that don't usually have got a "night mode" that will provide you with an exposure duration of a couple of seconds. This will allow you to catch moving lights during the night for a longer time than a standard shot producing light trails and other effects. You can try capturing car lights, carnival ride lights, fireworks, lightning and torch and sparkler lights which you move yourself to create patterns as well as trace and light up objects.

When you capture lights that you move yourself such as torches, LED lights, fiber optic lights and sparklers, that is known as "light painting" and can be used to produce wonderful photographs of light trails as well as the illuminated setting and stationary objects. Whatever is in constant motion and not lit up by the lights for more than a second or so will not display in the photograph.

One type of long exposure photography you may have seen before is "star trails" which involves taking shots of stars with extra long exposure times. This requires investing in a cable release (or shutter release) for the dslr camera to permit the extra long exposure.

Long Exposure Daytime Photography Tricks

Doing long exposure digital photography during hours of sunlight requires a particular filter to lower the light considerably to allow for an extended exposure time. Use a Neutral Density Glass filter or an Infrared filter to achieve this affect in the day and the Infrared filter is an excellent fool by itself for creating awesome photographs. During the day time there are lots of things you may photograph with a long exposure time to create incredible pictures such as falls, waves and clouds to give them a misty, blurry, more enchanting appearance. You can even use this technique to photograph scenes without the people who are there appearing in the photo, if they're moving continually, for example in a busy path with moving people.

Color Infrared Photography Tricks

Some stunning pictures may be taken with Digital cameras using an infrared filter during the day or night. Such pictures usually appear other-worldly or mystical and appear like the colour was changed with Photoshop. Not all digital cameras will be capable of this because many newer cameras filter out infrared light. You can test if the digital camera can take infrared photographs by taking a long exposure photo of any infrared television remote control's LED while you press the power button. When the light shows up brightly in the photo, get yourself an infrared filter to suit your digital camera and you are all set.

You will have to change your focus with the filter off and then modify your white balance after you put it on in addition to increasing the shutter speed as the filter is extremely dark. Skies and water should appear deeper and darker and trees and plants should appear white colored or blue/white in the infrared pictures. You will also obtain the same long exposure results due to the darkness of your filter which can make for wonderful photos of waterfalls, clouds, streams and waves.

As we discussed, there are several methods to take different, beautiful and impressive digital photographs using some basic techniques and tools. Be sure to check out the video at the link listed below to view some examples of photos taken using these techniques and others.
