Jobs In Digital Photography

I am a recent college graduate looking for a job in Photography or Digital Manipulation, where should I start?

I have a Bachelor's of Applied Arts and am very talented with Photoshop and a good Photographer. I want to do work dealing with creative photo manipulation/design. I know I will have to work my way up, but I do not know where to begin searching or applying for jobs that will lead me there. I am having trouble finding information about what types of companies would be looking for someone with my ability. Also, what type/kind of job titles are out there? (Online job searches and websites have been useless)

Write a resume, put a strong portfolio together (with as many tear sheets as you have from working for the school paper, (I hope you did that), as an intern and any others).

Then look in your area (or where you want to live) for a newspaper, large company that has a PR department that includes a position for a photographer/photoshop wizard or for a successful photographer in the field of photography you are most adept at shooting where you can work as an assistant. Your skills with Photoshop, may get you a job at a professional photo lab as a retoucher or at an ad agency in the pre-press or post production department.

Then with your resume and book in hand, start knocking on doors.

You are an unusual talent.

Most of my photographer buds are shooters and use most of their time behind the camera and avoid "computer" time.

Most of those I know who are Photoshop wizards are really digital artists and enjoy spending hours in front of the computer.

What would be a good starter digital SLR camera?

I've always like taking pictures, but I've never had a good one. I want to start getting some really good pictures, and take some photography classes. A little hobby to start seeing I'll be out of the army in Jan, and waiting on my husband to come back from Iraq before I find another job. So, any decent "beginner" ones? I have some money saved up, but I'm not looking to spend more than $800. Thanks!!!!

Short answer: For your budget I'd get a Canon 500D

Long answer: Have a look at http://www.twin-pixels.com/how-to-choose-dslr-buyer-guide/ - it explains what you should look for in simple and unbiased terms.
