In addition to determining the number of colors that can be represented in an image, color modes, also known as color spaces, affect the number of channels and the final size or weight of an image file. The choice of one of the following color modes available depend on the purpose that you want to give the digital image in question:
Here is a Guide to Digital Photography to the color modes in digital photgraphy:
Pen Mode. Corresponds to 1 bit images. They are images of a single tone background color. Depending on the density of the fabric of the pixels can achieve effects with shadows or bright areas. Very little space in memory.
Halftone mode. Corresponds to the 8-bit images and allows for 256 shades of gray. Usually used for the representation of black and white photographs of poor quality. Unlike the pen mode, the other for creating intermediate grays.
Color indexing. Corresponds to the 8-bit images and allows for 256 shades you can specify. Images associated with this mode of color often have a color palette that shows every one of the colors of an image. This color mode is often used for images intended for Web or multimedia production, as it allows different images using the same color palette and also your storage space is very low.
RGB or RGB mode. The images in RGB (red, green, blue) for working with three channels, one for each color. Each of these channels is 8 bits and, therefore, have a total of 24 bits of color. Such images are often used if the display is made only by an output device to monitor, because colors are obtained as a result of the decomposition of light images is not meant to be physically printed.
CMYK or CMYAN. The images work in CMYK mode have four channels, one for each primary ink (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). The information displayed in each pixel is the percentage of ink to be applied to achieve a certain tone in his final four-color printing.
