is the coolpix s630 a digital SLR camera?

I need a digital SLR camera for a photography class I am going to be taking next fall and I have a coolpix s630 and I was wondering if that would work. THANKS GUYS!

No.
As a rule, if you can't change lenses, it isn't a DSLR.

You need full manual controls as well. It would fail there, too.

What is the best SLR camera to purchase for a beginner? need help asap! THANKS A LOT!?

I am taking a high school digital photography class and a SLR camera is required. What is a good camera for beginner use? I really want to get good, so please make some good suggestions. And where do you recommend I buy it from? I need it asap! thanks sOOOOo much.

Some teachers will require you to have a minimum model. That is, one at least "this good". So I highly suggest asking the person who is going to be teaching you what they think. Having said that, brand-name shouldn't matter as long as it's reputable. Pentax, Fuji, Canon, Nikon...You definitely don't need the most expensive model by any one of them. For Fuji, look here - http://www.fujifilmusa.com/products/digital_cameras/showcase/index.html and look under the 'professional' header. Those are the SLRs. The 'serious' ones have fixed lenses. Just pointing that out because their website is a little more complex, with more products and categories.
