Help on photographing hair? Amateur with no photography experience.?

I've no experience in digital photography and my friend has asked me to photo some of her hair styles that she's doing at a top hair salon. The people I will be photographing will be people off the street which will not be expecting me to photo them and are doing me a favour. I will be doing it with a hand held digital camera inside. What will I do for lighting and composition to get the best results for my friends portfolio? Basic photo tips for photographing hair without studio resources?

Christy's advice is great! Use her tips and add these 2:

1. shoot from a position a little above the model since you are featuring hair (if you shoot from below the model, you'll get more face than hair), and

2. if the camera has an optical (not digital) zoom, use it at its max, but make sure to fill the frame with your subject--the longer focal length is more flattering for portraits.

Can I take studio quality portraits of my children at home without a huge investment?

After serveral disapointing Portrait studio experiences, I've been thinking about upgrading to a Digital SLR type camera and trying to get my own shots (and after what I've seen and paid good money for, I'm pretty confident that I could do just as good). With some photography knowledge and the willingness to upgrade my camera equipment is this a realistic plan? Also, any recomendations on the equipment would be appreciated.

if you know lighting and the other things required, cheap lights with gels will do or some off camera flash

if your a handy type - can buy a hammer and build a house - then buy some lights and make portraits?

High School Classes Required for Photography Major?

I'm a junior in high school who is planning on majoring in photography in college. I'm particularity interested in concert photography. Is there any sub-category of photography I should consider minoring in for concert photography? Also, what high school academic courses (which maths, sciences, etc...) are required for this major? What elective classes? I plan on taking Digital Photography and possibly AP Studio Art next year. Any other help/advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Just take the same classes you need to enter any college. Your advisor can hook you up.

My emphasis was on math/science and it was good enough to get me into Brooks.

Any classes you take will be beneficial as you enter the field and start working as a photographer.
