Digital Photography

"It will be decades before Digital Photography reaches the quality needed to replace film." Oh yeah? Only a few years after that prediction was made, digital photographic technology had reached a quality, resolution and affordability sufficient to make film all but extinct.

The convenience, the cost, the ease of use coupled with huge technical advances in converting photons into pixels have combined to make digital photography popular among top pros, advanced amateurs and novices alike. As early as 2006, 82% of a group of photographers surveyed said they had tuned to digital photography.

DSLR Camera equipment is just as sophisticated and expensive as film equipment ever was. The results are obviously of a high enough standard to be used in any professional application. And the technology continues to advance at great speed.

There are many advantages to digital photography. The ease of transferring photos to a computer and then post-processing them in programs such as Photoshop; the fact that you can take a photo and see the results on an LCD screen immediately; the fact that you can, from one photo to the next, vary the ISO from 50 to 3200; the fact that you can take 1,000 digital photos on a reusable card and not have to pay for the processing; the fact that you can take stills and video with the same camera without needing any other equipment; all these things and many more combine to make digital photography so popular.

In a period of about 10 years, the entire photography world has done a major shift from all film photography, with digital being a sort of distant hope of being able to get results, to a photography...

I have no background/experience with photography, but can anyone give me an idea what camera should i use?

I am particularly looking for a semi pro digital SLR camera that is both "newbie" and "pocket" friendly. My friend told me that electronics are more affordable if you buy in Singapore than in Manila. Ideas anyone? Thanks so much!

p.s. thanks to your answers guys! been really helpful! :-)

I am particularly looking for a semi pro digital SLR camera that is both "newbie" and "pocket" friendly....

Answer: I use an Olympus E1 because it is a "Pro" model that was released several years. Olympus has several models that are very good SLR's with EXCELLENT economy lenses. Soon to be discontinued but very user friendly and selling at bargain prices right now is the model E500 (also known as EVolt 500). New models in the past few months are the E400, E410 and E510 with limited availability in different regions of the world (avoid the E300). Their economy "kit" lenses are some of the best in that category and they also have "Pro" and "Super Pro" lenses that are stellar.

Although Olympus is not as well known as some of the other brands I have had long ecperience with the company. They have more experience in electronics than most of the other manufacturers AND make some of the best optics in the world (they have a significant presence in medical equipment like microscopes, etc.). Most important they give excellent value and are frequent inovators. ALL Olympus DSLR's have a dust reduction system which other makers have finally introduced in the past few months. Dust can be a BIG headache in SLR's because it gets on the sensor and shows up in the finished images.

My friend told me that electronics are more affordable if you buy in Singapore than in Manila. Ideas anyone?

Answer: This depends on where you are. Warranty service varies from country to country and manufacturer or distributor. Also be aware of VAT type taxes, import duties and shipping costs which add to the cost. Plus you need to make sure you are dealing with some one you can trust/depend on.

P.S. Do not get dragged into the # of Megapixels, argument there is MUCH more to digital photgraphy than megapixels...

Has anyone attended the Nikon digital photography school that comes to your city?

I am thinking about attending there are two days of instruction, but it is pretty pricey around $150 each day. The first day is to teach basics on the digital slr camera and the second is about software programs to enhance your photos etc. Has anyone taken these courses, are they worth the price? I am not a complete beginner, just need some additional instruction, would these benefit me?

I attended a one day session a number of years ago, before they had the school devoted to digital. It was very informative and enjoyable. For the one day it was $99, makes $150 for 2 days seem like a bargain, and the speakers and photographs were outstanding. I have thought about going again sometime. Oh, lunch was furnished and it was also outstanding.

What are some colleges with excellent (or any) photography major programs? Preferably dark room and digital.?

I'm looking into colleges, but I'm curious as to which academic schools carry photography majors?

Not just digital, but dark room as well is preferred.

Also, I know that art schools have photography, but I'm looking to study English. I want to be able to get an academic education with an art education.

Thank you :)

Digital Photography Success Review

Many people believe that it takes years and years to become a good photographer. In reality, this is a myth which is perpetuated by those with a vested interest in maintaining the so called "mystique" of taking photographs to a professional standard.

The truth is that anyone with a genuine interest in photography and a willingness to learn can move up from amateur level to semi pro quality very quickly.

One person who believes that the hobbyist can converted into a pro level photographer is Amy Renfrey. Amy is herself a professional photographer and she has created a unique package of information designed to enable the amateur photographer reach their full potential.

The package includes two superb ebooks written by Amy called "Digital Photography Success" and "Advanced Digital Photography". Some of the contents include:

1. How to compose your shots and position your camera giving a secret way to turning bland and dreary shots into stunning images that can be framed and entered into competitions.

2. A simple element to look for during the day that will greatly improve your photos particularly when you need to tone down bright, over-exposed spots that have previously ruined the entire photo.

3. How to decide on the best placement of subjects in your photos, emulating the masters of photography. You will wonder why you never saw this before yourself!

4. How to eliminate overly bright and overly dark areas on your photographs, eliminating fuzzy images, blurry lines and indistinguishable objects.

5. Learn how to use A,S,P,M camera settings properly, and how they can save you in many awkward and difficult situations.

6. Discover how to use aperture and shutter speed together to create sharp, fast high action sports shots in sharp, crystal clear focus, every time.

7. How you can get much more light on your scene without changing shutter speed or aperture simply with the press of one small button at the back of your camera.

8. Learn how to easily use your camera in full manual control and why you will never want to use anything else again.

9. Discover one simple rule that will increase the quality, sharpness and depth in all your photos.

10. How to keep off-centred subjects in perfectly clear, sharp focus, regardless of what camera you own - even when you shoot in auto or with a basic, cheap camera.

I cannot hope to cover everything that Amy teaches in this Digital Photography Success review.

If you'd like to re-discover the pleasures of photography, I recommend you take a look at her website Click Here.

Digital Photography: Passion and Hobby Becomes Art

Photography is an interesting hobby. It eases your mind and soul and brings out the creative instinct in you. But this art gets more and more interesting when done with the use of a digital camera. It also introduces one into the world of digital photography. Here age, sex or skill does not matter. There was a time when people hesitated to get into the hobby of digital photography, the basic problem being the investment, but now, the time has changed and people have seriously started Digital Photography as their hobby. Do you like to be one such person?

All that matters is your passion for the art of digital photography.

Process of Digital Photography

The process of Digital Photography is a chain that starts from the shooting of images and ends with the display of the photographs. In the digital world, it is the image that forms the key element. And the picture quality of the image is determined by its resolution. The resolution in turn is the number of horizontal and vertical pixels on an image. Therefore resolution is the key factor that decides how big you can print your image or how much of it can be cropped.

Steps involved in Digital Photography

In order to understand how the digital camera suitably fits into the system of Digital Photography it is necessary to understand the steps involved in making digital photographs.

First Step: Input of Images

The input device in a computer is probably the keyboard. However, in Digital Photography the input devices are those that capture the images.

Digital Still Camera – It shoots images in a digital format.
Digital Video camera – It can capture images like a digital still camera.
Video cameras – It captures images onto a video format.

Second Step: Processing the Digital Photograph

Digital photographs can be stored onto your PC after they are taken. They can be then edited using in whatever way you want using the photo-editing program, Adobe Photoshop. Here the options are endless.
Few ways by which you can process your images

1.Crop parts of the image that you feel unnecessary and highlight the main frame.
2.If you wish to post the photos on the Web then trim down the number of pixels in the image so as to make it smaller.
3.Use filters to give the images the look of an oil painting, watercolor or the look of your desire.
4.You can stitch-up multiple frames in a single frame to create a landscape effect.
5.For a 3D stereo effect or an animated image merge two images and you can display this on the Web.
6.To improve the images make slight alterations in brightness and contrast.
7.Mish mash the images to create a photo medley.

Third Step: The final output, the Photograph

In Digital Photography there are many ways through which you can display and share the photographs you have taken.

Some of the well-known ways are as follows

1.Just e-mail the digital photographs to your friends or to family members.
2.Post the digital photos to the Web Service that will allow printing the digital photographs on T-shirts, mouse pads, posters and even on cakes.
3.Add the digital photographs to a word processing program or to the desktop of your PC so as to publish it as a document.
4.Mail the digital photographs on a Website or onto a Photo network.
