A good Digital Compact with Aperture and Shutter Priority modes?

Hi All,

I want to buy a digital compact with aperture and shutter priority modes and also good shutter lag performance. I would like to get suggestions from those who are into digital photography seriously.

Canon Powershot A720IS is what is in my mind but I prefer to have something which can fit into pocket.

good in lowlight conditions and a good `macro type mode`6.1 mp

Best Digital SLR Photography Book for beginners ???

I am getting into SLR photography, and was wondering what the best beginner Digital SLR book there is, explaining what changing the aperture and white balance etc. would do to a photo. Examples in the book would be helpful aswell.
