I want to apply to a university course in photography next year, but i've hardly picked up a camera. Any tips?
I recently got rejected from an art course so i want to use this year to build up a portfolio. I've always liked photography but never had the time to get into it. Now i have loads of time. Thoughts?!
If you just want to get out there and take pictures to show off your eye-for-art, then get yourself a compact digital point-and-shoot camera. I really recommend the Sony CyberShot. This is the camera that I use when I'm not using my DSLR. These run around $200+.
If you want a more professional camera and plan to take photography classes, you will need a DSLR. There are many good types of DSLR camera's out there. A few good ones are the Nikon D300, Nikon D90, and Canon Rebel XSi. These cameras will allow you to purchse additional lenses and such that you cannot do with a compact point-and-shoot camera.
Have fun building your portfolio!
