Photography questions for the experts!?
Ok, so I am an amateur photographer and I have a digital SLR. I have the Canon Rebel XT and need help with this.
I dont know exactly what this is called but does anyone know how I can manipulate my camera so that in my picture, the background appears larger than the foreground, and vice versa making the foreground appear much larger than the background.
To some extent you can do this with your camera and lens without resorting to double exposures or to digital manipulation of the image after the shot.
If you want your subject (in the foreground) to seem larger and the background to seem relatively smaller, use a shorter focal length (possibly a wide angle lens) and get closer. Taking your shot from a slightly lower angle would also help to give an impression of larger subject size.
If you want your subject to appear smaller, back away and frame your shot so your subject is a small part of the frame and shoot from a slightly higher angle. In this case you would use a longer focal length (possibly a telephoto lens, depending how far you are from the subject and the framing of the shot).
The best way to figure this out is to try it. Have fun experimenting.
