Photography Help: Which lens should I buy?
I'm taking a photography class and I'm interested in exploring the subject outside of schooling. Right now I have the most experience with portraits and I want to expand into landscapes.
My Canon Rebel SLR came with a 35mm lens, which is what I've been using. It's NOT digital and I want to keep it that way... film photography has completely captured my imagination and I want to save digital photography until I've honed my film skills.
What type of lens works the best with landscape photography?
And where is the best place for me to look for one?
If I remember correctly, wide angle lenses are used for landscape, and telephoto lenses are for fine details or snapshots of a close-up image. The only problem is that I start to get confused when I look at lenses on Amazon.com... all the different mm sizes blur together and I forget what I really need to be looking for.
Anyone that will help me find my perfect lens and explain why I need it will be my hero! :]
xoxo
Yes, you really need a wide lens for most landscapes and this will cover more subjects (interiors, candid groups etc) than a long tele lens - unless you get into wildlife, paparazzi or surveillance work, which rend to be real specialities.
So, the generally accepted most used range is between around 24mm and 100mm (85-100m = portrait lenses). As you want a wide I'd try to stick to 20-35mm (since you have that already).
I'd take a look at the Canon website first for price / size benchmarks - make a list, then get on eBay, Amazon and any sites recommended to you by others here - post another Q if you need to!
You could also see what your local camera store have and take peek to get an idea of the coverage you want. beware though - in my experience you always want something a little wider if you cover a range of work.
