Photography and Design?

Hi, I am a sophmore in Highschool, I have a real passion for Design and really like photography so i have a a few questions. Well first of all i have taken a introduction to graphics and design and will be taking more classes in graphic design, web design, and visual arts. My work so far is good but i would like to make it great(: now to the questions: since i am interested in photography can i start of using a digital camera? I do not come from a wealthy family at all so i can not afford a Digital SLR...i know i will eventually need one of those but at the moment its not available to me becuase of cost issues. Also i am already familiar with photoshop so i know that could potentially help me (even though i can't buy it at the moment) so just feel free to give me advice on stuff please..oh yeah and btw i am planning on becoming a professional tattoo and piercing artist(:
