Digital Photography Filters

What's a good digital camera to take high quality photos of my daughter's dance recital without flash?

Do I need to go with a DSLR or will a point 'n' shoot work? I use to do photography many years ago and want to get a digital camera that will take high quality photos of my daughter's dance recital, without using flash. If any point 'n' shoots will do the job, do they take filters? Any suggestions DSLR or point 'n' shoot under $500 or $600?

Well, sure you could use 3200 ISO if you want very noisy images. But I am sure that you want something that you can make some enlargements from.

What you need in P&S is a fast lens. Some P&S cameras have fairly fast lenses on the wide end. If you can get close enough that you can keep your max aperture wide enough to use a fast shutter speed then a P&S could work. The max aperture would need to be about f/2.8.

Here are some I would recommend based solely upone their features. I haven't tried any of them but they have very nice features that will allow you to have a lot of control when you shoot:

Alternatively, unless you can afford to buy a fast lens for an SLR it isn't going to give you much better results than if you use a P&S. Except that DSLRs tend to have less noise at higher ISOs.

Keep in mind that the sensor that records the image is much bigger in a DSLR than in a P&S and this results in better quality images.

In a DSLR you can get an entry level DSLR for about $450-500 and then a 50mm f/1.8 lens for about $125-150 (for most brands-I don't think Olympus has one). This is a lens that will allow you to shoot without a flash. Of course, it isn't exactly a telephoto lens so you would have to get a bit closer and then could do some cropping of the image, but not too much or you will be more limited on how big you can print.
