Hi,

You do not say if you have a camera yet, or if so what type - though I might guess a Nikon DSLR?

After reading the manual a couple of times, you should know which buttons to press and which knobs to turn to alter the camera settings. The next thing is to understand is what settings are best for a given situation. There are many on-line resources for this - one example below - but the best thing is to use your camera, take pictures and criticize you own work.

The second link is to "expose to the right" all you wanted to know about histograms and were afraid to ask. Luminous Landscape has a good selection of tutorials and briefings, both for starter and more advanced users. Google the specific area you want to know about - and you will certainly find it.

If you are at all serious, I would suggest you forget the camera "auto" modes and use Tv or Av. Get to know what works for your style and what does not - this is difficult if the camera is making all the decisions for you.

Do lots of tests - set up the camera and shoot the same subject at different settings, see for yourself what makes a difference.

Join a camera club or society - people are free with advice and critique. Local colleges may also have short, or evening courses for beginners. Look at the websites for photographers you admire, Magnum for example is a concentration of the world's best.

Both Nikon and Canon offer "experience days" just make sure it is at the right level for you.

Don't buy a camera magazine for a year after you get your camera - it will just make you want some more kit, which is probably unnecessary!

There are many answers on YA dealing with first DSLR choice if you have not made one already.

Learning photograph is an incremental process, you move forward step-by-step, and hopefully with not to many backward steps. I have been photographing for over 40 years, and am still learning - and loving it!

Good luck

Cheers
Charles
