Whats a Good first Professional digital camera?for a Beginner?& should a course be taken?or learn on my own?
I have really been into Photography for the past few years and people tell me all the time I have an great eye for taking photos and that my photos are very nice...but in reality I dont really know the mechanics of a camera..and I have gone through several point and shoot cameras and was wondering what is a good Proffesional camera for a beginner?Im thinking of getting into the business and taking photos as a way of making extra money by photgraphing at weddings and parties. What is a good camera that is quality and proffesional yet not super complicated to use?
also should I take a photography course...or just buy a good book and learn on my own.I dont have a whole lot of money so I have choosy on what I do.Would love to hear from all you photo fanatics out there. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A camera like the Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel XSi is a good starter, but not quite up to professional usage. Learn the basics using that kind of camera. From there, the more advanced or professional cameras will seem pretty easy to use. I'll recommend my professional system at the end.
To start in the business, you would be much better off as an assistant to a pro and then branch off once your totally comfortable on your own, have invested some serious $$$$ in your system (multiple camera bodies, lenses, flashes, other accessories), and have a good portfolio to show potential clients.
You can learn from reading books, but classes often time give you the one on one critique of your work that a book just can't. Plus instead of learning by yourself, there will be other people at ALL different skill levels in the class. It can be much more fun to learn that way.
You don't have a whole lot of money... consider something else besides photography. ;) j/k It is very rewarding, but also very expensive. The market is really saturated with photographers. Plus there are a lot of people that have Digital SLRs. For example, if you want to shoot weddings, not only are you competing with other professional photographers, but also you are competing with aunt/uncle/brother/sister/cousin/friend of the bride or groom that owns a digital SLR camera (with the kit lens) and says they can do it for cheap/free. My advice is if you want to do it as a profession, first find a real job.
For professional usage, both Canon and Nikon are the "top dawgs." There are some professionals that use Olympus, Sony, or other brands. I've been using Canon since high school, so its naturally the system I tend to recommend.
Since I'm a Canon photographer, here's the Canon equipment I would recommend you get to start Professionally.
Camera Bodies:
EOS 5D kit w/ 24-105 f/4L IS USM
EOS 40D (as a backup)
Lenses:
EF 16-35 f/2.8L USM
EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM
EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM
EF 50mm f/1.4 USM or f/1.2L USM
EF 85mm f/1.8 USM or f/1.2L USM
Flashes:
A couple Canon 580 EX II
As you get clients and paid for jobs you can then consider getting a studio strobe system and other lenses that match what you shoot. You can then get one of the EOS-1 series camera bodies which is primarily used by professionals.
