Has Photography Become Too Competitive?

There was once a time when you had to be really dedicated to become a photographer. You had to do lots of training, learn how to use very expensive film cameras, and learn how to process photographic film. But most of all, you really had to be committed.

These days, it’s all changed. Why? Because of digital photography. Not only does almost everyone now have a basic digital camera on their phone, you can also get pretty good compact digital cameras that produce pretty decent shots. So now almost everyone is a photographer of sorts, snapping away at their life and uploading pictures of their friends and pets to their blog or their Facebook account.

But not only that. If we take it a step further, it’s now much easier for people to make the leap from amature photography to professional photography. Digital SLR cameras are becoming much better and much cheaper, and are now no longer just for the committed, fully-trained professional.

The result is that photography has become ultra-competitive. Almost anyone with a budget digital SLR and a basic level of knowledge of how to use it can set themselves up as a wedding photographer or a portrait photographer. And many do. Knowledge and technique is also now easy to come by, with the wide range of photographic magazine available, many offering tutorial CD’s.

So, while it has become easier to break into photography, in terms of the equipment and the skills, it has also equally become more difficult to succeed at it, just purely due to the sheer number of other people also giving it a go.
