Can you recommend a digital SLR for macro photography?
I'm interested mainly in landscapes and people, but also in wildflowers and insects. Anyone recommend a macro lens? I was thinking of buying a Nikon D40x
The D40x is just fine for macro shooting; it's a more difficult decision on the lens.
Since you want to photograph insects as well as wildflowers, you'll need to get a macro lens with some "working distance" between you and your subject so that you don't scare the insect away.
Hence, I would recommend these lenses for you to consider, based upon your budget:
AF-S VR Micro- NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED

If you don't mind manually focusing, Tamron makes a superb 90mm f/2.8 macro lens that is worth considering. This lens can double as a portrait lens too, although it won't AF with the D40x (but would with the D80).
