DSLR Tips & After that?

Dear all, I am thinking of buying a DSLR after years of using compact digital cameras.
When I'll buy the DSLR i am going to take photos of landsacpes, people, and street shots.
I am confused which brand to buy?
I short listed it to Canon & Nikon but still can't find any differences when both brands bring the same technical features!!!

After I buy the camera and take photos, how can i get the most of my pictures? is there any good photography clubs on the internet? is there any good photography clubs in London i can participate with?

I wish you advice me about the points mentioned above.

Cheers
A Londoner

The only way to tell which camera is for you is to go to the store and play around with both brands. Whichever one is most comfortable in your hands and has the controls where they make sense to you will be fine. Both Canon and Nikon make great cameras and lenses. It really is a personal preference. Technology changes very quickly and these two companies are always neck and neck with each other. If one comes out with a new feature or improvement the other will follow very shortly. Choose the camera that you like that is in your price range. Remember that lenses are more important than the camera body so there is no need to go for the expensive camera if you then have to scimp on the lenses. It is best to go with a cheaper camera and more expensive lenses. There will be no difference in image quality between say a Canon Rebel and a Canon D50. The D50 is a better camera but the end result is the same.

For the subjects you mention I would at some point get a nice wide angle lens for the landscapes. Something like a 10-22mm or 12-24mm. One is Canon the other Nikon. For portraits you can't beat the 50mm F1.8. Cost is about 50 pounds or $100. For the street shots the 18-55mm lens that comes with most of the cameras will be fine. In fact it will be fine for all the above mentioned subjects to start with.

To get the most of your pictures you need to learn how to use the camera properly. The easiest way to do this is to take a class or two. Many high schools, community colleges, civic organizations etc. offer affordable classes.
You will also need a basic editing program. I recommend Photoshop Elements. There is little use for the full version if you are not either a serious amateur or pro. Elements will do just about everything you want.
There are probably a bunch of camera clubs around London. I don't know where to tell you to look though. I am in the U.S.
