I'm a beginner in digital photography, what kind of camera should I buy?

So many choices! I see so many camera to choose from and get lost, or worse, I'll look at some of the nicer (and typically more expensive ones) and say to myself "I can figure that out!"...but, some of you pro's help me out here.
