Understanding Depth Of Field In Digital Photography

Can I create Depth of Field on an Automatic Camera?

I own a Nikon Coolpix wide angle L100 digital camera. I am currently taking a course on digital photography and one of my assignments is to produce a few photos showing DOF, focusing in on the subject while blurring out the background. I understand the concept but my camera does not have manual controls that I am able to find in order to do so.

While looking for a camera to purchase my instructor suggested the above camera so I am not going to go out and spend another 300 or more on a more adjustable camera. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate.

Switch to scene mode Portrait.
Zoom way in, extreme telephoto or close to it.
Back far away from the subject until framed properly.

Using the telephoto greatly decreases depth of field. Be sure to hold it steady.

That's how you do it with a cheap point and shoot. The L100 might have some other feature to do this--no way to set aperture manually?
